TrueNAS Server Build Using WD Red Plus

5 out of 5 stars

I just built a TrueNAS server using an older PC that is no longer supported for Windows. I had only one HDD, so I needed three identical hard drives to build a RAID stripe. The WD Red Plus were highly recommended. I purchased three and am impressed with how quiet and vibration-free they run. Even after removing the PC’s front bezel I can barely hear the drives spinning. I’m closely monitoring the drive temperature. These are 10GB drives that run at 7200 RPM, so they probably run a little hotter than a 5400 RPM drive. In my environment the drives run just above 40C. Removing the front bezel didn’t change the drive temperature, but it did lower the CPU temperature. I’ve already begun building a second TrueNAS server and plan to use the WD Res Plus drives there as well.

Hi, We're sorry to hear about your user experience and for the delayed response. Please be informed that hard drives produce some noise when they work. The amount and kind of noise depend on what the hard drive is doing like reading or writing data. It's good to know which sounds are normal and which might mean there's a problem with the hard drive. Please refer to the mentioned link to know about the causes of hard drive noises: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/32906 If you encounter any issue with the product, you can open a ticket at https://support-en.wd.com/app/askweb with detailed problem and error screenshots.

Work as advertised, so far so good. I had heard these were noisy drives, but I dont hear a thing. Sometimes when writing large quantities of files it may make a little noise, but otherwise Id never know they were there. Only time will tell how they perform but Im happy with these drives so far.

One of 4 drives dead on arrival, WD service is excruciatingly slow, can't use any of them until I have 4 and over 1 month later, no sign of progress or shipping back a new drive. I have little confidence I'll be able to do anything if they send a refurbished drive for my DOA new drive from other reviews online, and my drives are losing months of warranty during this wait. Abysmal dead drive service.

Don't buy the 10TB or 8TB Red Plus.

These drives are extremely noisy with what can best be described as a loud "fan noise" even when idle. They also use a lot of power and run hot even idle. The 10TB and 8TB current WD Red Plus drives are NOT at all the same as the 6TB and smaller or 12TB and larger drives. The 10TB and 8TB versions are air filled, rather than helium filled, drives from HGST rather than typical WD drives. That honestly makes no sense why WD would be so inconsistent to offer completely different drives, with completely different specs, within the same product line. The 6TB drive is a nice quiet WD drive as are the 12TB and larger models. But the 8TB and 10TB versions are loud, power hungry, and run hot with zero benefits for all the noise, wasted power, and heat. Who thought this was a good idea?

Hello, We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD Red Plus Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review. Based on your concern, We recommend connecting the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer, to test the health of the drive using Western Digital Dashboard for Windows. Ridiculously Hot & slow compared to the EFAX 100 v

Purchased 2 more 10T drives, They removed the helium to save a buck as a result these runs Exactly 10 Deg. Hotter ( 120deg. f @ idle ) .Than the EFAX 100 versions ( 118 deg@ idle ). I see a short life for these. I would rather pay the extra price for the older version.

I installed 2 of these WD RED Plus 10TB drives in my WD My Cloud Ex2 Ultra and set them to Mirror RAID. I reloaded 6 TB of data which took 7 days and the drives worked flawlessly. These drives are quiet, fast and well worth the money. If you have a lot of data to store, I highly recommend these drives for you. My old WD Red 6TB drives worked for 6 years, until I ran out of space, with no problems so, I trust the WD Red drives to hold my data and so should you.

Quiet, works with Synology DS1812+ *

Arrived on time, packaged well. I was searching for replacement NAS drives to replace the failing ones in my Synology DS1812+, which can occupy 8 drives. Synology's Qualified Vendor List (QVL) lists Enterprise drive models that are impossible to find in new condition. After reading about Western Digital's collaboration with NAS-makers and the fact that this 10TB drive works in many 8-bay storage systems, i rolled the dice and won. Backing up multiple Terabytes of data is no picnic! Once I got it done and rebuilt my RAID arrays using these drives, the first thing that struck me was how quiet they are. My older 4TB drives roared and hummed. * * * NOTE : FOR OWNERS OF SYNOLOGY DS1812+ * * * I had to make one minor modification to the drive trays to allow these drives to sit flush with the bottom: Cut off one of the plastic nibs, which usually aligns with the threaded holes on the bottom of the drive. The drives work swimmingly well. I've successfully installed DSM, created RAD5 and restored 12 TB of data.

My 10TB WD Red in a new single bay light blue NAS replaced a 4Tb HDD in a different 3-y/o single bay NAS. With no other changes or tweaks to my system, my Intel NUC Corei7-8955U transfers large files to the NAS at around 40MB/s compared to 9-10MB/s for my old NAS. Plus, the WD Red is so quiet that I can barely hear it compared with the loud clunking noises of my old NAS HDD.
