About the Book

Widow Rose Meadows eagerly accepts her brother-in-law's offer for her and her two daughters to live on his farm after her treatments in a sanatorium finds them needing a home. But is this scarred and reclusive man ready for all the changes these women will bring to his life?

Book Synopsis

If any place on God's earth was designed to help one heal, it is Meadowland. Surely here, at her brother-in-law's Kentucky farm, Rose and her daughters can recover from the events of the recent past--the loss of her husband during the 1918 influenza epidemic, her struggle with tuberculosis that required a stay at a sanatorium, and her girls' experience in an orphanage during her illness. At Meadowland, hope blooms as their past troubles become rich soil in which their faith can grow.

Dirk Meadows may have opened his home to his late brother's widow and her girls, but he keeps his heart tightly closed. The roots of his pain run deep, and the evidence of it is written across his face. Badly scarred by a fire and abandoned by the woman he loved, Dirk fiercely guards his heart from being hurt again. But it may be that his visitors will bring light back into his world and unlock the secret to true healing.

Bestselling author Ann H. Gabhart explores the tender places within the human heart in this character-driven story of trusting God to turn our burdens into something beautiful.

Beautiful Story of Forgiveness

A very good story about a time period where influenza was running rampant and tuberculosis that cause some a lifetime of suffering. I loved Rose and how desperately she wanted to be well. Being separated from her two girls has cause all them heartache. I was so upset when I read how the girls had been treated in the orphanage. With their resilience and hope they knew that someday their mother would come for them. There are moments in the beginning that you could feel sadness as mother and children tried not to give up. Dirk was shocked when he received a letter from Rose and one of the children asking for help. He has been in his own little world after a tragedy that changed his life. The author talks about the scars Dirk carries that are visible for everyone to see. It made me think of the emotional scars we hide so no one knows we are hurting. I loved how Dirk came to their aide even though he was hesitant in doing so. If he can let go of the past, perhaps he can find happiness again. The highlight for me was the bond between sisters. Their relationship is very special as they have had to depend on each other while their mother was away getting treatment. They have an innocence about them that is refreshing and I adored watching them become more confident and happy as they lived with their uncle. There was much to explore at Meadowland as Calla and Sienna loved being outside, It is easy to picture their smiles and hear their laughter as they start to feel like they finally are safe. The story is a beautiful reminder to forgive and trust God. Letting go of the past leads to freedom. I loved how the mystery was solved in the book that had haunted Dirk for years. “There are so many times we wish we could go back and do things over, but we can’t. We can only ask for forgiveness.” I received a copy of this book from Revell Reads. The review is my own opinion.

Exceptional Must Read

WOW! This has left me speechless as my heart and mind digest the flawless storytelling. Ms. Gabhart has outdone herself with this exceptional story that grabs you from from the first sentence and is still holding on at the last one. Could we have a sequel please as this feels like family. My sister was reading from her library yesterday and she felt the same way. Calla and Sienna captured my heart from the beginning as my mom experienced some of the same treatment while in an orphanage except she was locked in a basement instead of a closet. The author captures so much truth in her words as I actually heard these words from my mom’s lips. The beauty and poetic feel to this story is breathtaking and therefore makes this my favorite read so far this year. I loved all the characters flaws and all and the growth they showed especially Dirk was realistic. The redemption, grace, forgiveness, and love shown left me with tears. This author isn’t just an author but a gifted storyteller like sitting on the front porch of Appalachia and listening to your grandparents stories. I would give this more stars if I could and highly recommend moving it to the top of your TBR pile. I received a complimentary copy from the author. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

When the Meadow Blooms offers a vivid picture of dealing with tuberculosis in 1925 Kentucky, and author Ann H. Gabhart has created wonderful characters and written some of her best words ever! This is a touching story filled with so many emotions: uncertainty, fear, and separation, but it also shows the power of love and faith. I smiled, I cried, and I remembered, but I was left with so much joy! As the Meadow Blooms is a poignant 5-star read and it's one that will remain on the keeper shelf in my bookcase! I received a copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Story from three view

4 out of 5 stars
sesquius - 3 years ago
I have read a few other Ann Gabhart books in the past and haven’t been overtly impressed with her story telling. However, when I selected this book I wasn’t fully aware of that. Despite having any preconceived notions on her writing, I found this book pretty good. It kept my attention and made it hard for me to put down to do other things. The story starts off with Rose in a sanitarium unable to leave because she has no place to go. She has two daughters she left in an orphanage two years prior, with the anticipation it would be a short stay. But Rose’s health didn’t improve as quickly as she hoped. So two years later she yearns to be with her children. Without an option in hand, she writes to her brother-in-law for financial help. The story has three main storylines, with three points of view on the same situation. It somehow successfully all tied in together. When it comes to to description that the author has created of Meadowland Farm, I can actually see it and yearn for a simpler time in life. All in all, this book by Gabhart is definitely worth reading.

A Dream’s End or Beginning

Sisters, Calla and Sienna, have been forced into an orphanage for two years, where they have been mistreated. At the same time, their widowed mother, Rose, has been a patient trying to recover from TB. Penniless, still not well, and without family, Rose reaches out to the one person who might help get her daughters back, her brother-in-law, Dirk. Rose has only met Dirk once, he was unfriendly and preferred to stay hidden. Horribly disfigured and scarred in a fire twenty years earlier, Dirk, has lived the life of a broken-hearted recluse. His fiancé, Anneliese disappeared the same day as the fire. He has never gotten over her deserting him. Desperate, Rose begs Dirk to help them and he agrees to bring all of them to his farm, Meadowland. An inquisitive little girl, a traumatized teenager, and an ailing woman are now living with Dirk. Can he adjust to having people around him? Or will he keep himself shut off from them, still haunted by Anneliese leaving? This sweet story will grab your heart. Sienna has a special gift with animals, it is almost like they can understand her. Calla can't help trying to figure out what happened to Annelise. But by working on this mystery, she may put a wedge between them and Dirk. Will Dirk allow them to stay, or will their dream of living at the beautiful Meadowland end? This five-star book is clean, and written from a Christian viewpoint. With all the turmoil these people face, it has a really wonderful ending, and the tale is very enjoyable. I recommend it to fans of mystery and true to life stories. Revell Books has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, When the Meadow Blooms, for the purpose of review.

When the Meadow Blooms by Ann H. Gabhart was one of the best books I have read recently and I’ve read quite a few. Rose is separated from her two daughters since she is recovering in the sanatorium from tuberculosis. Her precious daughters have been dropped off at an orphanage for far too long. The orphanage is not a pleasant experience. Rose thought she would be recovered by now. She has been estranged from her late husband’s family. Her brother-in-law, Dirk, could be her only hope. However he does not want others around due to his past hurts. Rose and her daughter, Calla, reach out for help at the same time unbeknownst to each other. Will Dirk help? I could not put this book down! I was so drawn into the story. I think the plot and characters were amazing. I will be looking for more books by this author! I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review. I could not put the book down. I highly recommend.

MOVING ON FROM THE PAST

“When we love, when we care, we can be hurt, but trust me, Calla, giving and receiving love is worth more than whatever hurt may come,” the fifteen-year-old girl is told in Ann H. Gabhart’s novel, When the Meadow Blooms. ~ What ~ This three-hundred-and-eighty-four-page paperback targets those interested in a tale of overcoming the past and finding love in the future. With no profanity, topics of abuse, illness, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The ending includes two chapters of another book by the author, acknowledgments, the author’s biography, and advertisements. In this story based in rural Kentucky in the 1920s, Dirk has had trouble dealing with the scars of his past for over twenty years. When Rose, his widowed sister-in-law, and her two daughters come to live with him at Meadowland, he has to decide if he should let down his protective barrier and find love among the ashes of a past relationship. ~ Why ~ This is a sad but engaging read about a man who cannot get over being hurt, a sickly widow who will do anything to protect her children, an inquisitive teen who asks too many questions, and a carefree child who befriends two crows. I love the relationships the broken family had with one another and how they called out to God for help and mercy. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not like the added Bible verses, hymns, and prayers. Others may not want to read about the hardships of being physically and emotionally scarred or having to live in a sanatorium or orphanage. ~ Wish With many Bible verses added, it would have been nice to have the eternal plan of salvation clearly stated. I wish all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence. ~ Want ~ If you like reading a story of true healing by trusting in the Lord and others while dealing with difficult situations, this is a redeeming and heartfelt story. Thanks to Revell for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.

A Totally Heartwarming Story!

Rebecca Maney - 3 years ago
3.5 stars "Meadowland sounds like heaven to me, and I dream at night about Sienna running through meadows of daisies and butterflies." . . . . . "And in spite of his reluctance, he too, could see the child running through a meadow. His meadow." Having lived a solitary life for many years, imagine Dirk Meadows' surprise when his mailbox contained not one, but two letters from his dead brother's family members; one from Frank's widow, and the other from his oldest niece, Calla. Independent of each other, they had both requested his help. Could a scarred, reclusive bachelor find room in his heart, and in his home, for three lovely young ladies? Perhaps it was time for Dirk's heart to get a makeover. "A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh." Ecclesiastes 36:26 What a "love comes softly" sort of story; beginning with nearly indescribable hardships and ending with fields of everlasting hope. Mind you, Dirk and his feminine residents make their share of missteps, and the past's stronghold on Dirk's psyche is a formidable obstacle to overcome, but miracles are possible and "forever is a long, long time". Enjoy your time in the meadows!

Character-driven

One cannot help but let their heart become intertwined in the lives of the characters Ann H. Gabhart has so skillfully developed in When the Meadow Blooms. Sisters Calla and Sienna Meadows have been living at Louisville's West Side Home for Girls since their mother's admittance to Rest Haven Sanitarium following her tuberculosis diagnosis. The girls were separated even though both were living in the same facility, and Sienna in particular had endured some harsh treatment. Rose had never imagined being away from her girls for two years when she dropped them off at the home. Now each of them are desperate to be back together. Might the answer lie with their estranged Uncle Dirk, a man they don't really know who lives with both physical and emotional scars? Will he be willing to open his home and life to them? This sweet, slow-paced story is perfect for an emotional, character-driven read. I am always amazed by Gabhart's versatile writing. No matter the style or genre, I have never been disappointed with any of her books. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of When the Meadow Blooms from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

When the Meadow Bloom

I love Ann H. Gabhart's easy storytelling style of writing and her memorable characters. Calla and Sienna Meadows have been in an orphanage for two years while their widowed mother recovers from tuberculosis at a sanatorium. Looking forward to the hopefully soon day when she is well enough to be released, Rose sends a letter to her brother-in-law, Dirk, asking for a loan to find a place to live. It arrives the same day as a letter from Calla. She has written asking him to rescue Sienna and her. Dirk doesn't know the girls and had only met Rose once, years ago. After a tragic fire that left him with many burn scars and the disappearance of the woman he intended to marry, Dirk has lived for twenty years as a recluse, hardening his heart. Though he is willing to help his brother's family, when he brings them home to his farm, he intends to keep the walls up around his heart. Calla, at fifteen, and Sienna, nine, have a close relationship. Sienna is rather other-worldly, in tune with animals and sensing things about people that most don't. She was often accused of not paying attention which gets her into trouble at the orphanage. I found her to be a delightful child. Calla was such a good daughter and big sister, eager to help, and very curious which causes some trouble. There is a bit of mystery and romance along with themes of forgiveness and faith. When the Meadow Blooms is a wonderful book that I highly recommend. I received a complimentary copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

This book...I don't even know what to say... It was that good. And it was literally "all the feels". What I can say is, you absolutely HAVE to read this one. Don't let it pass you by. I can say that the characters were very well developed. You love them because of their situations and their trials and their successes and their joyous experiences, as well. Don't want to say too much about this one because I don't want to give anything away. But I will say that it is so worth your time to read this one. I will say that I loved the "crows". As a child, I remember some crows in my little town and everyone knew them by name and they did all kinds of things that made them almost seem human. So yes, get this book, read it, because you will love it. I am still thinking about it, even though I have closed the cover and finished every page. One of those books that sticks with you! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

Sweet Story of Second Chance Love and Forgiveness

5 out of 5 stars

VickleaW - 3 years ago
The story is so well told that it was like I was seeing a movie in my head of all of the past hurts and all of the healing that had to take place. Dirk was hurt physically, but more than than, he was wounded emotionally and spiritually. In helping Rose and her girls, he opens himself up to more pain but also to a healing beyond his imagination. This book includes some suspense about how to get the girls out of the orphanage as well as a mystery as to what happened to Dirk’s first love who seemingly disappeared after his accident. Calla’s desperation to stay at Uncle Dirk’s farm was evident and gut-wrenching. She was willing to sacrifice everything just to have a place to live that was good for her little sister. Sienna touched my heart with her simple love of nature and acceptance of all things good. Rose’s predicament was realistic and horrifying and then such a sweet turn-around when she is safely ensconced in her new home at The Meadows. The whole story was fast-paced and a joy to read. I raced through the pages to find out what would happen to Rose and the girls, but I also wanted to know what, if anything, would open up Dirk to forgiveness and love again. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to those who enjoy historical fiction, romance and mystery because this book has it all!
