Book Synopsis

- A new approach to understanding wine

- Keli White's very personal approach to exploring this fascinating and delicious subject will resonate with wine students for years to come - destined to be a modern classic

Kelli White loves every aspect of wine ('especially the science-y bits') and wants to ignite the same kind of passion in her readers. Here, she introduces the many ways in which we can taste it, talk it, appreciate it, choose it, understand it, and navigate its enjoyment with confidence. There are countless ways to engage with wine. If you are a history buff, it has a multi-thousand-year story to plumb. A lover of language and travel? Wine is being made in more countries than ever before and on every continent (except Antarctica). A foodie? Wine is a natural companion to food, and the two can interact in unexpectedly thrilling ways. For those who have fallen in love with wine already, this book is an imaginative and practical guide to embarking on its greatest adventures. For those who haven't yet, it is the spark to light the fuse...

Review Quotes

"...a charming, unpretentious, conversational intro to wine with loads of information told winningly by a former sommelier who now runs the wine education program at Napa's Meadowood Resort." -Bloomberg

"Kelli A. White is a longtime sommelier who is also a terrific writer, unpretentious yet wise and conversational, as if you're sitting across a kitchen table with a couple of glasses, enjoying an afternoon. She manages the winning trick of being both authoritative and self-deprecating. For Ms. White, what's most important is developing a comfortable confidence in your own taste and preferences. She has no use for the pedantic rigidity that often characterizes such guides or the dumbing down of what really is a complicated subject. Instead, she focuses on what's essential to know as a beginner, leaving the more esoteric material for later." -Eric Asimov, The New York Times

"White shows great ability to focus on and communicate the truly essential bits of information that can make the reader feel confident and eager to learn more - and relax into the leisure of a good bottle." -Ines Salpico, Decanter

"I like her style, her knowledge (and frankness), her choice of examples, her lightness of touch - in fact the whole package...All wine books claim to 'demystify'. Few recognize that mystery is part of the fun."--Hugh Johnson

"If you want to do wine and stay human, Kelli White's Wine Confident charts the route. It's all here - both the wine stuff and doing stuff with wine. Let this most unpretentious (and evidently kind-hearted) former sommelier chat to you over your shoulder. Drink up the wisdom. Enjoy the clarity and grace of her writing. By the end, you'll have all the tools you need to maximize wine pleasure while minimising wine stress."--Andrew Jefford, writer at Decanter and World of Fine Wine

"She is right there in the trenches with all the rest of us. Learning. Thinking. Having a great time. Falling in love with wine over and over again."--Karen MacNeil

"The Pro Tips and Inside Tracks that Kelli shares throughout the book get right to the heart of wine and will help you make better decisions in restaurants, retail stores and around the dinner table."--Jane Anson

"With so much information online and so many 'influencers, ' it's easy to forget that wine enjoyment isn't a series of snapshots but a journey. Think of Kelli White as your knowledgeable, charming and funny tour guide, who will meet you at any point along your own wine trail."--Dorothy J. Gaiter, Senior Editor "Grape Collective"

About the Author

Kelli White was 21 when she first tasted wine and had no idea, until then, of the future that awaited her. Her quick wits and easy communication style helped her catch up quickly as she trained as a sommelier in New York City and Napa Valley, and then, in 2015, published her first book Napa Valley, Then & Now to great acclaim. She is now an award-winning author, popular speaker and highly entertaining wine educator.
