Q: Do I need to use a liner inside or can I plant directly into the pot?
A: Hey NFA, they claim the pot is rust resistant, so you can plant straight in it. It may start to rust after a few years. It fits a 3 gallon nursey pot perfectly (large size is 12in x 12in interior diameter). Most nursey pots have drainage holes anyway, so whether you plant straight into the pot, or drop a nursey pot in it, water will still come into contact with the pot. It is glazed inside and out, so it would probably take a while for it to show rust from the outside. As the drainage hole is on the bottom, this would probably be the first place for rust to form (water accumulating, possible missed glazing), but luckily that is out of sight. If you are deciding whether or not to plant straight in it, my suggestion would be to base that decision on the plant type and size. As this is a metal pot, it will hold moisture unlike a clay pot. If you have like a snake plant/cactus that likes to be dry, I would keep it in a clay pot and drop that into this pot, as it will pull moisture through the clay vs holding moisture in the metal pot (porous vs nonporous material). A plant that likes to be dry will be more susceptible to root rot in this pot vs a clay pot. Of course on the flip side, if you have a plant that likes to be moist, this is the pot for it! Side note on the clay pot sitting inside this - If you go the pot in a pot route, you could also put a drip tray in it and voila! no more water coming into contact with the metal pot! The only downside would be that you would need to take your plant out after every water to dump the drip tray, BUT that would save the pot from rusting. Hope this helps. Happy gardening!
