Filled with heat from fires and from bedroom scenes, this book is the story of FBI agent Liz Kelley and her former beau Sawyer Powell. When the book begins, the two have not seen each other for fifteen years, not since the fire that scarred Liz and sent her fleeing from her hometown in Wyoming and into a profession that required all of her skills. When an arsonist strikes the little town and Liz returns to Laramie to investigate, Sawyer is the fire investigator so they have to work together. Okay, so that was predictable but the twists in the rest of the book are fast and furious and kept me guessing about who was setting fires and methodically committing murders in the flames. I really liked the main characters and their interactions together, hesitant and afraid to show true feelings at first. The plot’s pace was fast and furious, like the fires that were being described, getting bigger all the time and more threatening to the entire fire department of the town. Everyone except Liz, Sawyer and a deputy named Holden are suspects, so there are a ton of red herrings and plenty of complications along the way. This is a fast read that is edgy and intense, with some head-spinning twists and a surprise villain. Lots to like here in this first book in a new series, so I am already looking forward to the next one!
