For over 40 years, Gojo Japanese Steakhouse lit hibachi tables on fire, serving traditional steakhouse fare with bold Japanese flavors. Chef Jo Yamanaka’s vision brought a taste of his hometown of Kyoto, Japan to Westport, Kansas City, creating a local institution by captivating the Midwest palate since 1978. Famous for signature sauces, especially the cult classic Yellow Sauce, Gojo became a hub for celebrations, family gatherings, and shared meals. Our journey to households began in 2020 when Chef Jo decided to retire and close the restaurant during the global pandemic. Inspired to carry on Gojo’s 40-year legacy and stay dedicated to our loyal diners, Jo’s daughters started Gojo Japanese Foods. We now bottle our signature sauces, allowing customers to recreate a hibachi experience at home. The goal remains the same: bringing people together over good food and memorable experiences.
