Q: Can this effectively be used as clothes washing soap (for sink washing)?
A: Thank you for your interest in Dr. Bronner's! Our Pure-Castile Liquid Soaps and Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner work very well for handwashing delicate fabrics and even washable silks and wool. However, please note that our products are not specifically formulated for laundry, and we have not tested them for all types of fabrics. A great rule of thumb is to follow the tag's washing instructions on your item. If you are still uncertain, we recommend doing a spot test first, to make sure this product will be okay to use. If you would like to move forward with washing your items with our products, we suggest adding 1 Tbsp. (15 mL) of Pure-Castile Liquid Soap or ½ Tbsp. (7.5 mL) Sal Suds to about 1 gallon (4 L) of cold water. Swish the items gently in the bowl and let soak for about 10 minutes. Swish the items again to release any loosened grime and rinse with clean water. To condition natural fibers like silk and wool, add 1 cup (240 mL) of white vinegar to a new bowl of fresh water. Message the garments in this dilution and rinse them once more. In a towel, gently press the excess water out of the fabric, laying stretchy or heavy fabrics flat and hanging lightweight fabrics to dry. For more details on this process and more, check out Lisa Bronner's blog post Handwashing Delicates with Dr. Bronner’s, https://www.lisabronner.com/handwashing-delicates-with-dr-bronners/ Lastly, we would like to mention that if you are using our Pure-Castile Soap and have hard water, it is possible to encounter some mineral build-up. Rest assured that this is completely normal as the interaction of hard water, and even soft water, with any true soap (not synthetic detergent-based soaps), can leave behind a thin film of minerals that appears as residue or “soap scum.” If you encounter any residue or build-up on your garments, note that you can easily dissolve this residue left from our soap with vinegar. We recommend following the last step we outlined in our walkthrough and even repeating the step should the residue persist. Also, while this is not an issue if you are using Sal Suds, we do encourage this last step as a great way to naturally soften your fabrics.
