About the Book

What happens when children are more mature than their parents? Growing up with an emotionally unavailable, immature, or selfish parent is painful, but rarely discussed. In this breakthrough book, clinical psychologist Lindsay C. Gibson exposes an often overlooked, yet extremely common syndrome that shapes the lives of so many people. Gibson also provides powerful skills to help the adult children of self-centered parents gain the insight they need to move on from feelings of loneliness and abandonment, and find healthy ways to meet their own emotional needs.

Book Synopsis

If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, or abandonment. You may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met, when your feelings were dismissed, or when you took on adult levels of responsibility in an effort to compensate for your parent's behavior. These wounds can be healed, and you can move forward in your life.

In this breakthrough book, clinical psychologist Lindsay Gibson exposes the destructive nature of parents who are emotionally immature or unavailable. You will see how these parents create a sense of neglect, and discover ways to heal from the pain and confusion caused by your childhood. By freeing yourself from your parents' emotional immaturity, you can recover your true nature, control how you react to them, and avoid disappointment. Finally, you'll learn how to create positive, new relationships so you can build a better life.

Discover the four types of difficult parents:

  • The emotional parent instills feelings of instability and anxiety
  • The driven parent stays busy trying to perfect everything and everyone
  • The passive parent avoids dealing with anything upsetting
  • The rejecting parent is withdrawn, dismissive, and derogatory

"Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents is written with the wisdom and heart of a seasoned therapist and the mind of a scholar who's spent decades poring over psychological research and theory. In this book, Lindsay C. Gibson seamlessly blends this impressive body of knowledge with the real-life experiences of her clients to create a user-friendly and highly readable book. ... "Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD, gives practical insight into a prevalent problem...The book is impeccably clear...This utter lack of confusion makes the book quite soothing, despite the heavy subject. The soothing effect is amplified by Gibson's caring, knowledgeable voice--it's easy to believe her when she says, 'I wish the very best for you.' This book can be a source of healing for adult children of these kinds of parents--particularly for young adults. I just finished this book. I now have a list of things to talk about with my therapist, a cheat sheet for dealing with my parents, and hope. The ideas were presented so well that I immediately started seeing how people act differently. Also, I wasn't expecting a plot twist at the end, but it was a great present.

Read the book myself although I thankfully do not have the issues discussed. Gave it to a family member to help him deal with his arent. Also came across a friend who borrowed the book. Nice exercises and simple explanations. May tilt a bit too much toward the self-love movement but if used in a balanced manner will prove to be useful.

Wow wow wow, the accuracy in describing my whole childhood is astonishing! My parent strongly embodies all 5 traits so this book was so valuable in validating my emotional experiences with them. The roadmap the author provides in navigating the challenges that come with having an emotionally immature parent is extremely helpful. The tools she gives in healing/dealing with EIPs are things I have had to do with my parent - create optimal distance and boundaries and let go of the "healing fantasy." THANK YOU to the author, Lindsay Gibson for all your impactful work! Hopefully, we can all become better parents to our kids so they'll never have to buy this book!

This was recommended by my therapist-- so good! It is not a self-help book or a bashing of your parents book. This is an honest and studied phenomenon that has been written for understanding. I am grateful my therapist recommended this because it helps validate the feelings and emotions I have felt since childhood in a way that I never realized I needed. I HIGHLY suggest this read.

This book gave me the validation I didn’t know I needed as someone who grew up in a home that felt off regardless of having everything I “needed”.
