The wick number, if you'd like to purchase an extra set with the unit is part number HDC411. Q: Can softened water be used?

A: Hello, RC! We do not recommend using softened water. If your water source is softened, it is okay. Please keep in mind you may need to change your wick filter more often due to the effects that softened water has on wick filters. -Melissa, AIRCARE

Q: Do you need to use distilled water if you have hard water in the tap?

A: Hello, Peg! We do not recommend distilled water, regular tap water is fine. If you have extremely hard water, you may consider using distilled water as it will make cleaning your unit easier and it will help lengthen the life of your wick. When water runs out, should the humidifier stop?

I thought for this humidifier, when water runs out, it should be able to stop by itself. I only used it for about two weeks, today I forgot to add water, and it just kept running. And the air the fan blew out smells so bad like some chemicals. The filters were completely dry. Did I get a defect product?
