Book Synopsis

An instant #1 New York Times bestseller, the new novel from the author of A Man Called Ove is a "quirky, big-hearted novel....Wry, wise and often laugh-out-loud funny, it's a wholly original story that delivers pure pleasure" (People).

Looking at real estate isn't usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can't fix their own marriage. There's a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can't seem to agree on anything. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment's only bathroom, and you've got the worst group of hostages in the world.

Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them--the bank robber included--desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises, these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.

Proving once again that Backman is "a master of writing delightful, insightful, soulful, character-driven narratives" (USA TODAY), Anxious People "captures the messy essence of being human....It's clever and affecting, as likely to make you laugh out loud as it is to make you cry" (The Washington Post). This "endlessly entertaining mood-booster" (Real Simple) is proof that the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope can save us--even in the most anxious of times.

Review Quotes

"I laughed, I sobbed, I recommended it to literally everyone I know." --Buzzfeed

"[A] tight-knit, surprise-filled narrative... the brisk, absorbing action prompts meditation on marriage, parenting, responsibility, and global economic pressures. Comedy, drama, mystery, and social study, this novel is undefinable except for the sheer reading pleasure it delivers. Highly recommended."--Library Journal (starred review)

"A deeply funny and warm examination of how individual experiences can bring a random group of people together. Backman reveals each character's many imperfections with tremendous empathy, reminding us that people are always more than the sum of their flaws." --BookPage

"Backman again captures the messy essence of being human...It's clever and affecting, as likely to make you laugh out loud as it is to make you cry." --Washington Post

"Backman is a master of writing delightful, insightful, soulful, character-driven narratives...[He] writes so humorously and poignantly about life, marriage, parenthood, love and death, prepare to be taken hostage by a stand-up philosopher/novelist who reminds us we are all 'idiots' because being human is 'idiotically difficult.'" --USA Today

"Backman's latest novel focuses on how a shared event can change the course of multiple people's lives even in times of deep and ongoing anxiousness. A story with both comedy and heartbreak sure to please Backman fans." --Kirkus Review

"Funny, compassionate and wise...an absolute joy." --AJ Pearce, author of Dear Mrs. Bird

"Wry, wise and often laugh-out-loud funny, it's a wholly original story that delivers pure pleasure." --People

TW: suicide, anxiety, depression. this is the best book i’ve read this year thus far. @backmansk is an incredible writer. not only can he tell an incredible, multi-layered story about multiple people but teaches so many lessons with an ample balance of humor and seriousness. favorite out-of-context quotes: “Because we’re doing the best we can, we really are.” “Nothing is easier for people who never do anything themselves than to criticize someone who actually makes an effort.” Bravo, honestly! Highly, highly recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Anxious People finds a lovely balance of funny, poignant, and bittersweet. I very much enjoyed the intertwining narratives and characters. Although the novel explores some traumatic experiences and difficult subject matter, it is ultimately uplifting and hopeful.

First official 2021 book rec: Anxious People by Frederick Bachman Seriously. This. Was. So. Good. It was the perfect 2021 read! Not to mention the plot centers between December 30th (the day I started it) and January 1st (the day I finished it). It's a love story (not a Romance, that's different!) and a story about second chances and compassion and idiots. All of this is told through the lens of a hostage situation. It's not a crime story, it's a people story. It is dark but hopeful, harsh but compassionate, it's literally about the second chance that we all get with this new year! If House in the Cerulean Sea was the perfect sweet 2020 read to bring you comfort and togetherness, Anxious People is the 2021 book that tells us to keep moving and show compassion. You. All. Need. To. Read. It.

Purchased as a fan of the author. While it isn’t my favorite work of his, I did purchase this second copy to give as a gift. For me this was a faster read than his other novels and while it was somewhat predictable it still delivered Backman’s typical beautiful reflections on the human condition. In retrospect, this bite sized Backman was welcome in this year of anxiety as a perfect diversion from our reality while still addressing the experience of anxiety in general.

Let me start by saying I am a huge Frederik Backman fan. That being said, this book was a good read however, the stories didn't come together as I would have liked. In the beginning it jumped around a little too much for my preference. Reminded me of Liane Moriarty's books however, her stories have a better flow and connection.
