@amillionlittlepages Saturday (11/14) was World Diabetes Day 🌍 and the month of November is Diabetes Awareness Month, so I figured better late than never for sharing a #mondaysbluesstack of my some hopefuls as well as a big piece of who I am! I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes over 12 years ago when I was fifteen years old, and I’m attached to two robot parts 24/7/365 as a result! 💪🏼 Studies have shown that, on average, individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes make 180 extra decisions each day. Should I take X amount of insulin to cover the carbs in what I’m about to eat? Should I reduce the amount of insulin I’m receiving while I workout to avoid going low - and increase it afterwards to avoid spiking high? Will I need to adjust my overnight settings to hopefully avoid Dexcom alarms waking me up? Do I change my pump now while I have a few minutes to spare, or wait until it expires at midnight? Is it a good idea to chug some juice to avoid an impending low? 180 extra decisions. Thoughts like these are on a constant loop in my head, and are the driving factor behind when/what I eat, how productive I am at work, when/if I workout, how enjoyable I am to be around when social, when/how much I sleep . . . behind everything I do. That’s why on World Diabetes Day, I celebrate the men and women who have taken this diagnosis and these 180 extra daily decisions and, rather than allow them to completely consume their day-to-day, have instead become stronger because of them. This day celebrates and brings attention those who live, day in and day out, with the constant weight of responsibility, the lows, the highs, the guilt, the fear, the anxiety, and the countless alarms, site changes, and finger pricks. Life with Type 1 can be heavy, but it can also spark resilience, determination, and confidence. And for that, I celebrate this day and continue to drive towards a cure 💙✨ While I try to reserve this space for mostly bookish thoughts and conversations, I’ve been toying with showing everyone “diabetes in real time” via my stories one day - is this something y’all are interested in?! Technology is fascinating and makes my daily life a lot more manageable 🙌🏼

"You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life." --People

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon--the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell."

But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

Fredrik Backman's novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. "If there was an award for 'Most Charming Book of the Year, ' this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down" (Booklist, starred review).

"In turns moving and funny. . . I wager that you'll soon fall in love with Ove and be deeply moved by his situation, and after spending time with him, may perhaps gaze at the world around you with a little more empathy than when you turned the first page."--Eric Larson

"This charming debut novel by Backman should find a ready audience with English-language readers... hysterically funny... wry descriptions, excellent pacing... In the contest of Most Winning Combination, it would be hard to beat grumpy Ove and his hidden, generous heart."-- "Kirkus Reviews"

"You will laugh, you will cry, as his heartbreaking story unfolds through the diverse cast of characters that enter his life, all uninvited. You will never look at the grumpy people who come into your life in quite the same way. A very memorable read.
