My son and friend have the same machine, I have to clean the machine more than they do combined. I have warranty work done because it stopped extraction, but no one can tell me what was fix or replaced. Now the grinder stops working. Their solution is to change the burr settings drastically so the extraction has changed requiring me to change grind amount and time of extraction. I have been using the same bean since I got it, the same ones my son and friend use. Breville excuse? Do a descale and the light turns off, all good! NO! My frequency is more than two others combined! The machine not grinding was blamed on the beans…..the same ones I have been using .

This is definitely great for beginners who want to get into espressos, however, I do wish Breville/Sage would integrate a more consistent grinder into this setup, especially now they own the Baratza brand which makes great burr grinders for a similar price range. The only draw back for this machine would be the lack of a better grinder.

After an entire day of playing with settings we noticed inconsistency in the amount of espresso discharged. We finally got it to where we liked it, we were excited for the next morning but it only discharged a half ounce and instead of a full ounce. We wasted an entire bag of beans which would be fine if this worked but the pump doesn't output eniugh liquid and coffee is all about consistency and we followed all set upand cleaning instructions it just can't replicate so you may get one almost 3/4 ounce one time and half the next. Too bad because it is pretty. Taking it back.

I received the Breville Barista Express as a Christmas gift. Although there was a learning curve for dialing in the beans, I can now say I enjoy a great coffee every morning and afternoon. In fact, I recently stopped at a coffee shop I frequented often, and much to my surprise I make a better cappuccino! Now, my latte art needs a lot of work, but in time I hope to master that as well.

I bought this machine a little over a month ago & have yet to get a consistent espresso. I've changed all the settings & tried so many things. One day I can get a perfect double shot of espresso- the next day... junk- without touching the settings. Pretty finicky machine unfortunately.

Tight turn handle

The handle on the side to steam milk and run hot water is incredibly hard to turn. I’ve emailed Breville customer support about it several times and they keep telling me it will loosen up with usage. We’ve used it about 100 times and it’s getting tighter.

Inconsistent even with internal adjustment. Tried two machines, both had issues with the grinder. Would recommend getting a machine with separate grinde. Coffee tastes amazing. Just hard to get consistently the same cup even with pre measured beans and external accessories which in my opinion is a little nutty if I’m already paying $600 bucks

Severe design flaw

I really enjoyed the machine, that is until it become nothing more than a very large, heavy, paperweight. It has a severe design flaw that many users have encountered and replacing the gasket won't fix it. There are 5 screws that commonly get lose and are impossible to access without spending hours disassembling the unit. If the screws were easily accessible, it would be a quick fix and I wouldn't be having hot water sputtering and spewing all over the place. I really did enjoy the Barista Express while it worked, but it is so frustrating knowing that the problem is so simple and yet so inaccessible. If Youtube is any indication, it is a very common problem. Only trust reviews where the customer has had the espresso maker for a few years and not just a few months.

Inconsistent pouring

So.. My brother-in-law bought this machine 2 years ago and is loving it! We have being eyeing this machine for the last 2 years because it is quite expensive and there are about 12% who is dissatisfied with the machine due to its not working properly. Finally, we made ourselves Christmas presents 2024. We owned it for 3 days and I just couldn’t take it anymore. It is absolutely inconsistent in making a shot of espresso. We did figure out the grind coarseness and amount and the machine gave us a perfect amount each time (used the scale to weigh the amount), same amount each time so the pressure is in perfect espresso range, with crema etc as per instruction. However, the coffee amount dispensed to the cup was different each time from 5 ml to 70ml for a same double shot. Programming the amount didn’t helped, the issue persisted. Going back to manufacturer settings (30ml for single and 60ml for double) did nothing to us. Same inconsistent amount. When the machine dispensed 3 drops I gave up. I have returned it today. For $750 with tax.. that is completely unacceptable.
