This is my go-to fabric softener. I have sensitive skin so having stuff with scent on it causes breakouts for me. So seeing that downy made an unscented one was a big game changer for me. I love that it is a good value for what you get. And I love how my skin doesn't break out and I don't have to go without fabric softener and have stiff clothes.

I’ve used Downy Fabric Softener for 40 years, so when I tried this, I thought it would be great. However, it poured out thick as mud and stuck to the sides of my washer drum. It gunked up my fabric softener attachment, too. I was very surprised and disappointed. I do not recommend this product and will never buy it again. Sorry, P

I agree with the previous posts that the consistency is like pudding. It clogged up the softener container on my washer. I have added water to the product and hope it works better next time I use it.

Downey has always been a staple in our house, it’s what we trusted to use to softener our clothes without bothering our sensitive skin. Our washer requires us to water down the softener by half, so a bottle last use quite a while.
Super effective at making clothes, towels, and sheets incredibly soft.

I can be a bit sensitive to fabric softeners, so I love that this one doesn’t irritate my skin or affect my allergies. The fact that there’s no scent is perfect because it won’t compete with soaps. The packaging is very simple and effective. This bottle is not too bulky, has a good size handle for easy pouring, a well designed spout that eliminates splashing, and an easy to cap that doubles as the measuring cup. A small amount goes a long way so that there’s not a lot of waste. That small amount makes my towels and sheets incredibly soft.

I like this fabric softener because its smell is not too much strong. It brings me a feeling of comfort. It really softens our clothes, especially sweaters or fur coats as you can truly feel it when you touch the clothes. A minus point is the fragrance doesn’t last long.

Your Downy Free & Gentle being thick may be due to it being exposed to extreme hot or cold temperature. This is a really good product for sensitive skin. Even though it is free and gentle from fragrance or chemicals, it works well and makes laundry soft and keep a good smell!

We've a new bottle that upon opening was also in a gel form. Today I called the 1-800 number given here and which is also the bottle. Instead of getting to their service department i had to sit through a plug for some emergency medical alert device. When I told the lady I wasn't interested she continued to go over the reasons I should buy this service. Furious, I hung up.

Please know, John, we always expect every bottle of Downy Free & Gentle Liquid Fabric Softener to be free flowing and in its best condition. It's possible the container you purchased may have been past its 'best by' date, which is 12 months from its production date. Additionally, thickening can occur if the bottle has been exposed to extreme temperature changes. We don't know what number you called, but if you dial 1 (800) 688-7638 any Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 6 PM, EST, or from 9 AM to 5:30 PM, EST on Saturdays and Sundays, we'd be happy to help you with this. We have many quality checks in place to ensure our products reach you in the best possible condition, so we're sorry to hear this. It may be helpful to know that this product can become thick or lumpy when exposed to extreme temperatures (either hot or cold). If it was frozen, it will appear much thicker (gel-like) and won't return to normal consistency on its own. To remove lumps/thickening, you can mix a capful of product with 1/2 cup warm water until blended, which will produce about 3 medium load doses. However, if it doesn't mix easily with warm water, we don't recommend using it. We'd be happy to learn more about your experience and see how we can best help. Me and my two kids have sensitive skin and this is mu go to fabric softener it does an amazing job that you expect from Downey. Of you or your family has sensitive skin them this should be your go to fabric softener.
