Bought for my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He's very good with his fingers so he really enjoys using both his hands and the drill. Totally gets the reverse action also. We haven't used it as a light box in his bedroom yet. He presently enjoys choosing the coloured screws. Shame it takes so many batteries.

My 2 year old quickly caught on how to use the drill and loves it! Our drill did come with a defect but I was able to reach out to customer service and they quickly responded. In a short time we received a new drill at no cost! Great company!!

Fun Way to Learn Drilling Skills

My son played with this a lot when he received it. I love that it has a lot of the same capabilities as a "real" drill (you can change it to go front or reverse and there are two different bits that can be swapped out) and its pretty cool when it lights up (like us 80s kids and our light brights). I think I might have had more fun practicing my drilling skills as my 3.5 year old son. I'm only giving it 4stars because we've had it for a few weeks and he seems to have gotten bored of it already. I hope to bring this out more to help show my son all the creative capabilities this has. I think he can eventually fall in love with this. Disclaimer: I received this product in exchange for an honest review

The Design & Drill BrightWorks is a wonderful product for my 3 and 6 year old. They are fascinated by building and putting it in the dark to watch it light up (the colors are very bright, which they love). Great educational tool that brings out their creativity for designing patterns and more. The tools are perfectly sized for little hands. Very creative toy!

We got this toy for my 4 year old son, and he really enjoyed making designs - both his own and the patterns that came with it. Our 5 (almost 6) year old neighbor also liked playing with it. And my 1.5 year old daughter loves playing with the drill. So all in all a great product that will last a long time in our household.

My daughter received this toy for free to review. She is not quite three years old and loves to help her very handy dad with tasks around the house. This toy made her day to have her own "power tool" that actually worked (and didn't just make noise). She got the hang of putting the screws in and out of the board very quickly. The toy reminded me of "Light Bright." What I wish (as a parent) was that there was a sheet you could put over the board to show which colors to put where to make the various designs. There is no way she'd have the patience to look at the little booklet to make the designs. She has enjoyed showing this to her friends and teaching them how to use the drill. I would definitely get this toy as a present for a child!

My daughter has played this non-stop since she received it. She loves the colors and coming up with her own patterns. She cannot wait for it to get dark so she can turn on the lights and see her patterns come to life.

I received this game from Educational Insights in exchange for an honest review. I love this game/activity and so does my daughter! We haven't even used the drill yet to help put the pieces in, I just let my daughter choose the pieces and she screws them in herself (reinforcing her fine motor skills). She loves it! :)

My son LOVES this set! He just turned 4 last week, and this is so age-appropriate for him. We're currently putting an addition on our house, so he's been very interested in the tools the contractors have been using. Now he has his own cool drill to work with :) Just today he made the jet plane all by himself, and was very very proud! When we received this last week, after we put in the two AA & three AAA batteries required (not included) - he promptly filled up the whole board one by one with the little screws. He got a bit impatient having to unscrew all of them....but that's what he gets for filling up the whole board ;) The drill has a reverse setting, too, which is cool. It also has two different "drill bits" that kids can switch out. This toy is great to spark creativity and motor skills. There's a pattern book included, but my son has enjoyed making his own patterns. As a 4-year-old, he's super into patterns and tools...and this toy covers both! Overall, an awesome educational and fun toy!

Good toy but not very bright

The concept is great, and I chose this toy because it reminded me of the awesome Light Bright I used to have when I was a kid. The plus is that the screws aren't as small as the Light Brights, which is great if you have babies roaming around the house. Less of a choking hazard. And it requires using a drill and have the option of 2 different drill bits, which makes kids think a bit more when playing with this toy. The quality of the drill is great - very sturdy and attractive - and the screws are brightly colored and durable. However, the light box felt flimsy and it barely lit up the screws. Even in a nearly dark room, you could hardly tell that the light box was on. And when we accidentally left it on for an hour, the battery was almost used up. I feel like maybe ours was defective? Otherwise, it's a cool product that really promotes fine motor skills and creativity.

Neat little drill with lights

The Design and Drill kit is actually 2 different toys in one. You get the colored board with screws and then you have the drill. At least that's how my 3.5 year old views it. We had the opportunity to review this, and I was super excited to see what my daughter would do. For the first few minutes she had a blast using the drill to screw in the nuts. Then she discovered should could actually use her hands to get the nuts in faster than the drill, and that's when it became 2 separate toys. I'm glad that there was a booklet included with designs because my daughter loves those things. With various lego kits she would always want to try to build the things featured in the books. At only 3.5 this was the first time she could actually follow the patterns she saw in the booklet and recreate them on the board by herself. She would sit there counting how many green screws and how many holes from the edge she would need to put it in. Put a huge smile on my face to see her doing it on her own, and makes the entire thing well worth it. Once she's done she'd turn it on and have it all light up and proudly show me the "rocket ship" or "smiley" she copied out of the book. Then she would play with the drill separately, no matter how much coaxing I would to get her to use it for the screws, she'd simply insist on using her fingers, but that's fine, either way she's having fun, learning, and exercising her creativity. One little caveat, if you use eneloop pro rechargeable batteries (I have a lot of these on hand for all her toys), they are an extremely tight fit in the drill, so much so that I can't even extract them without prying them out with a screw driver. Even normal Duracell batteries are pretty tight.

My kids are not allowed to watch t.v. on a weekday so they play with toys. This toy has been their favorite since we got it. It's hard to find my son and daughter toys that they both can play with but I am happy to say they BOTH enjoy this. I love watching my kids work together and seeing their faces after they finish. I am a happy mama and I will definitely recommend this.

My husband is very handy and loves his tools, so I am always looking for toys that let our 2 year old play and model his work. We were given this toy in exchange for this review and I wasn't convinced that the drill would be simple enough for her little hands, but she picked it up very quickly and had fun at her grandma's all weekend drilling the screws and everything else she could find in grandpa's shop. I think as she gets older, this will have a second life as she gets interested in the patterns included in the instruction booklet and then creating her own. Fun toy!

All Around Awesome

Fantastic toy!!! Loved, used, and fought over by all 3 of my kids (10 yr old girl, 7 yr old boy, & 4 yr old boy)!!! Our 10 yr old girl was interested in recreating the designs that came in the booklet whereas my 7 yr old just wanted to design his own patterns. But the real reason I was curious about this product was not only for the fun, but also for the fine motor skills practice I knew my 4 yr old would get out of it. And I was right - not only does this toy provide endless opportunities for fun and creativity, but for my 4 yr old who has fine motor delays-this was an excellent play piece that also supports his fine motor capacities. I am very thrilled with the Design and Drill and would highly recommend it. Once my kids are done designing for the day, they then use it as a night light as the light feature is very exciting as well!!! Well done Educational Insights I couldn't be more enthusiastic about this product!

Drill Designs & Watch them Light Up

Both my four year old son and two year old daughter enjoy playing with this toy. My son is able to use the designs which come in the guide and drill his own pegs into the board. Then, once he is finished, we can take this into the dark and watch it light up. The two year old is still a little too young to follow the patterns, but she enjoys just placing the pegs into the hole and making her own pattern. Very creative toy!

My almost 2-year old son likes to try to fit the drill bits into the screws but hasn't mastered turning it on yet to drill in but I'm sure soon. I think the lighted board has more of an effect at night in a darker room than in the daytime.
