Great lightweight game if you want to get into modern board games. Tokaido is easy to learn and teach but has room for strategy and good replayability. We love playing with our kids (age 7-17). A fun quick game with lovely artwork and fun mechanics.

Tokaido is quick to learn and play, with rules simple enough for young children to understand, and doesn't require much space or time for setup. Playing with two players is more competitive due to additional neutral player rules. My wife and I enjoyed playing a 4-character game, where each of us controlled two travelers, to have a little less competitive pressure. The artwork is beautiful, especially the panorama cards. With ten traveler options, there is a lot of variety in gameplay. The player color tokens don't always fit in their designated holes in the traveler tiles, which made one of my cardboard tiles split slightly. Overall, a very fun game to play.

Fun relaxing game. Tokaido is a quick, easy to learn, and easy to play game. This game is great for families or for new gamers. The Japanese theme is excellent, especially the history detailing Tokaido in the rulebook.

Tokaido is an absolutely beautiful game, and an incredibly fun one to boot. This game plays 2 to 5 players, is easy to setup, easy to teach, and provides a wonderfully rich, thematic experience. We've also had great success playing with our children ages 6 to 16, but get this to the table fairly often with older, experienced gamers as well. You wont regret this purchase!

Tokaido is a very relaxing game that plays well at all player counts! It was easy to learn in the first play and is just as easy to teach to people new to the game. My favorite part of the game, apart from the art, is the core mechanic of moving along the path. The person farthest behind the path gets to move first. While this can result in everyone just going to the next available space, it also can push you to strategize on what spaces you want to try and take full advantage of. This is a great game for every occassion and I can't recommend it enough!

Tokaido is a family-friendly game in which you and your fellow travelers explore destinations, collect souvenirs, view panoramic vistas, meet locals, and eat Japanese food. The gameplay is easy enough that my second grader could play it, but there are also some strategic decisions to be made about which destinations to visit (and which to block for your opponents) as well as where to focus your energy for points. At two players, the game takes us around 30-40 minutes to play, so it’s a nice option for a weeknight. If you like set collection games and don’t mind a bit of “luck of the draw,” it’s worth trying, and at under $30, you get quite a bit of game for not much money.

Tokaido is a relaxing family game that is fun for both new gamers (young and older) and experienced gamers. The game is beautiful on the table and draws you in immediately. It is a blast to slowly grow the collection of cards in front of you that illustrate the adventures you’ve had on your journey. My favorite part of the game is how it can adapt to those that are playing it. Very new or young gamers? Use the introduction variant to not use the unique player powers and just focus on the main journey. Do you want a more complex game? Try one of the harder variants that limit inn meal options or modify starting resources based on player order. There are so many different leaders with unique powers to try that you’ll play it different over and over. I think the game shines at a higher player count, but the 2 player variant adds some nice tactical decision making regarding where to move the neutral player and works well. Tokaido is considered a “classic” for a reason!

I decided to try this game, and I am glad I did. The game offers a good amount of strategy without having overly complicated. The gameplay is simple: If you are the furthest behind, it's your turn. You can move as far ahead as you want, but cannot go backwards, so if you skip over a space, you leave that space for your opponents to take advantage of. Everything you do either earns points in some way, or helps you be able to earn points in the future. There is never a turn that truly feels bad or wasted, everything moves you closer to your goals! This is a great game to welcome people into the world of hobby board games. If you have never tried it, you absolutely should give this a shot!

Tokaido is a great game for those looking for a light strategy game. We played with our 7-year told, who was able to pick it up pretty easily - especially since there is no reading required to play. The game play is simple enough for family play, but there is certainly some cut-throat strategy for seasoned players to discover.

The theme of Tokaido is what drew me in, but the simple, laid back, but surprisingly strategic gameplay is what really hooked me. It's simple enough that new players to the hobby can pick it up and play, but has just enough depth that seasoned veterans will have a great time.

A light game with fairly interesting turns. Plays smoothly and is easy to learn/teach. The production looks great but could use a few tweaks to elevate it higher.

Tokaido had a one way action track representing walking a road in Japan while making various spots to earn points or money in different ways. It works well as a family game since almost everything is open information, and it is fairly short. It also works well if you are just getting into the modern board game hobby or are already a gamer who needs a shorter, chill game. It works great to unwind on a busy week night as well. There are varying paths to victory through different set collection, whether you want to paint panorama, collect souvenirs, donate to the temple or more. Plus the art is beautiful.

I first bought Tokaido more than 10 years ago, and I've never stopped enjoying it. It is a lovely game, elegantly designed, with engaging play that's easy to learn and fun for young and old. It plays quickly at any player count. The Crossroads expansion adds more strategy without making it too complex or discouraging casual play (or making it drag out). It's a modern classic and I love it.

This is a cute, well-designed game that is fun to play. It is relatively competitive, without feeling too cutthroat though. It's an easy game to teach, and light enough that you can play with a variety of ages and gamer-levels. I prefer this at 3 or 4, but it can also be played at 2-player, with a neutral player being moved.

Tokaido is a Beautiful, easy to learn game, which makes it a Must for anyone stepping into Table Top Gaming. The simple rules are a fast teach and with multiple plays, makes for an interesting stratigic game. The Panorama cards are a noticibly lower quality. Also, the Scoring marker is very very small. Other than these 2 minor gripes, the quality of the Art and other components are good. I would easily recomend this game for younger and/or newer players looking for a fast, beautiful journey through Japan.

Tokaido is a fun easy to learn action selection game where you travel the famous Tokaido road in Japan from Kyoto to Edo. Along the way, you gather souvenirs, have encounters, makes stops to the Temple, collect art pieces for panormas, and visit inns for unique cuisine. Easy to get to the table and worth revisiting!

Tokaido is a game that is fun for the whole family. It is simply to learn and play but offers tons of replay-ability. It has great components and beautiful artwork. Simple enough for the kids to learn to play but complex enough to keep the attention of me and my wife. Would highly recommend the game.
