I bought this about a month ago and have used it for about 10 rides. It has many more features than I was aware of... Still learning it. It's very user friendly- I don't consider myself 'techy' but I'm easily able to do what I wanted to do with it. So many functions, options, screens... Syncs so easily with my phone, watch and HRM... Just an awesome little piece of equipment! (Oh, and when I get near a busy highway- it alarms me of a high traffic area!! WHAT?!?!)
Give you jumps longitud!!

Lots of info for the stats lover. The screen however is always a bit dark and goes darker as the light fades.
Out with the old (520), and in with the new (540)!

Needed to replace a tired 8 year old Garmin Edge 520! Decided on 540 Solar - solid middle ground solution for my needs. Packed with features - some I hope to leverage someday! Good form factor, new optional mount charging capability compatible with my many existing mounts, USB-C port (yay!!), fast performance, reliable saving/uploading of rides, big battery capacity/life super, solar charging is awesome!!! Needed reliability of buttons vs capacitive touchscreen for wet conditions and some gloves. Treated myself to an orange silicone protector case for extra protection for bumps and drops. Nice. Overall running well, zero issues, very happy. Still learning new features!

Coming from a 530 the display is a bit more vibrant, the solar is also very handy, have to charge the unit a bit less than I did with the 530.
very difficult to see!

After my beloved Edge 1000 finally died I invested in the Solar Edge 540. It’s relatively easy to use and practical it is hard to see. its much smaller than the Edge 1000 and unless it has light right on it its very difficult to read. When you are going 20 mph plus on a bike you don’t want to have to stare for long periods at the handlebars.
Rubbish

I wanted the simplest GPS for MTB weekend warrior work, just to follow a track and record time and distance - and this is the simplest Garmin offer - way over the top, suited to serious bikers with all the gadgets and gizmos that make them 'faster'. There is little intuitive logic built in. I will insure it and then throw it over a cliff.
Great Features......BUT !

The 540 is O.K. But to program and customize it is NOT in anyway user friendly. I would have returned the 540, but it has been probably to long !

I don't need to charge it each ride like my old one. I recommend for all cyclist. A little bit bigger than my last one, but so much better for the gps.

i chose this garmin because i wanted something that would work with me on becoming a better cyclist which it is helping with! i really like being able to program in ride routes and having that extra safety net for crashes and such. good for cyclists ready to make the jump to a gps computer. solar charging is helpful, but do not rely on it!
Great bang for your buck

no need for a 1040 solar. solar charging is pretty negligible, but the battery life is great.
The Edge 540 Solar Changed my Riding for the Better

The edge 540 Solar from Garmin has completely changed the way that I ride my bike. I went from trying to figure out a route and get back home to uploading a route the night before, and getting to enjoy every second on the trail. I no longer need to worry about where I am going with the Edge 540. The Solar charging is great to have when riding out in sunny conditions and the way that Garmin displays data in it's HUD is superior to all other cycling computers on the market.

I'm using this for mostly navigating on trails and other backcountry routes and It's been working great for that. The solar charging adds a little extra battery life, but nothing significant. A lot of great features that aren't really intuitive to use, but I'm sure there is a learning curve that takes some time.

This is nearly perfect, the battery life is super good, it's super quick and it's very accurate. I've been using this for a racing and training and the actual device is amazing. It can be a bit difficult to create routes through the garmin app though. The one problem that I've noticed was when I paired my indoor trainer for the first time, it kept disconnecting and reconnecting. I definitely recommend this if you're looking to train and race.
Dislike. Difficult to use. New isn’t better.

I purchased this unit a month ago. I dislike it completely. My old Garmin 705 is superior in so many ways but Garmin quit supporting my device so I was forced to buy this new one which is garbage. New and improved means difficult and over engineered. I wish I could get my money back. Other problems: There’s no way to turn on the back light briefly while riding without messing with the buttons back-and-forth taking you in and out of your chosen screen. If you choose to leave the backlight on all the time, which isn’t bright enough anyway, it kills the battery. You are forced to use the Garmin Connect app in the background for weather so that means I have to carry a phone with radiation on my kidneys in my jersey pocket. So yeah, this thing is garbage. Just my opinion.

I was curious about how well solar would work, knowing it wasn't going to be the sole means of charging. I was pleased with it. The only reasons I gave 4/5 was that I think there is too much info to try to get through for the casual cyclist. But after using it for several rides & a couple short tours, I think I have finally got it set up for my riding style. Love the longer battery life!

So disappointed I didn’t read other reviews before purchasing about sensors dropping. I trusted Garmin for the other products I’ve purchased.
