It has multiple issues with synching. I can see it in history, but it doesn't come over to the phone or laptop. Super frustrating.
Just learning

This was a gift and I am just getting started learning the features. So far it has been pretty easy to load a route and save the ride. I need to make the font a little larger or at least define the contrast better. Let me know if that is possible

Compatible with all you bike sensors and gadgets, great tool to maximize, track and improve your rides. Touch screen is a great advantage to toggle between screens during rides. Recommended
Decent bike computer but screen too dim

Overall this is a good device with lots of features, but the screen is very dim and difficult to read in either the dark or direct sunlight. The solar charging doesn’t offer much benefit either and the battery drains pretty fast.
I’m keeping it, almost perfect

*photo is of the the larger 1040 (or whatever #it is garmin, it was unnecessary for me and i prefer the 840). Plan ahead for time to sit down with necessary charging, WiFi, and account login information to setup the device. Once setup - it’s awesome. It lasted 6 days (lots of desert sun exposure) on the solar charging, had at least 6-10 different routes loaded, sharing information/updates/notifications, checking the screens/switching between screens for various metrics during long bike rides…idk how much more I could have been using unnecessary screen time with it, but it never died (#teamamerica). Also it does passively charge in the sun when it’s not in use! I’m keeping mine. Even though I wish it had more options/range for articulating how it sits on my drop bars. It’s not enough to negate the other advantages of it.
Overly complicated with unhelpful manual

There is no doubt that the edge 840 is feature packed but it is unnecessarily complicated to set up and too prescriptive in terms of defaulting to workouts and performance rather than having those as a choice. Yes there are useful features but basic data should be there out of the box with anything else a matter of choice.
As a replacement for my old 540...

It's probably a no-brainer as to why this was a HUGE improvement! Everything works great, and the additional data has been very useful!
Poor readability

Too much white space, poor font makes for inefficient use of screen space. I find this to be much less readable than my Wahoo Roam 2. I've tried optimizing the screen content but can't fit as much useful data on the screen and still have it in a readable format. It's also missing nice touches like coloring gradient, etc.

Nice computer with a lot of features (more than I have delved in to). It synchs easily with my iPhone via the Garmin app. The battery easily lasted for a 10 hours day ride at Leadville.

I bought this several months ago and cannot get Garmin Connect to recognize my device. I have tried everything…deleting and reinstalling Garmin Connect, installing it on a different computer, buying a different cable. Nothing works.

A lot of Information to gather after a ride. Yes, it's more than I would ever really need, but it is nice to see all the metrics.
Buggy and unreliable but great when it works.

I have had the 840 Solar for about a year now. I feel like I need it for navigating long rides and it is very good to have when it works, but it goes dark, freezes or simply fails to track distance, HR, speed or the other metrics too often to be used as a training tool. Amateurs may find the 840 worth it overall, but serious riders, club riders and fitness enthusiasts need to consider more professional options.

Display is difficult to read in the sun. To fix that you have to adjust the backlight settings, which completely chewed through my battery in a 5 hr ride. Also, the Garmin was in the sun during the ride but did not gain any charge.

I have owned several Garmin Edge bike computers. I started with the Edge 500 and I was blown away by how much data I could get from a ride on my mountain bike. Since then I have used the Edge 510 and 530 before receiving the Edge 840 as a Christmas present this year. Each release has been a great step forward, but the Edge 840 is significantly easier to use with the touch screen and the refined user interface. I enjoy the hazard and turn warnings and I love being able to use the ClimbPro feature without following a course. This is a great bike computer.

Been using this for a couple of years now, easy to navigate the menu, Works GREAT even in low temps (single digits). Battery life is fantastic in all temps. Some adjustments should be made to get this a 5 star. No way to auto power off (only sleep) so if you leave the unit to download your activity and forget then the battery goes dead. Older units had this feature. 2nd fault - once you enter an activity you have to lock the screen to keep sweat or rain from changing your layout. This should be automatic, seems the opposite. Last thing they should build in Bikes and Gear for you to choose in an activity rather than needing to go to the app afterwards to choose this. All in All I highly recommend Garmin Edge GPS units! these items are small inconveniences.

Great bike computer but takes a long time to figure out how to set up the screens. Definitely better battery life than some other computers out there. I like the maps.

It is the perfect bike computer for the casual or experience. The screen is the perfect size to be able to see it, but not too large to where it looks like a phone on the front of the bike, but not too small where you cannot read the data screen as well. It pairs very easily with any external devices, such as lights or radars great recommendation would buy again.
