    I purchased two water filters and they both throw the Err code. I tried all the troubleshooting options but still get the code. The only difference I can see is the top of the filter has changed. At any rate, we are without filtered water and I don't know if I should waste more money trying another one.

    GE has added an RFID chip to the water filter in order to prohibit the owner of the fridge from using aftermarket water filters and to force the owner to purchase these over-priced filters. The RFID chip is an unnecessary technology and the older XWF filters are proof of it. You can monitor a water filter's usage without the RFID technology and without attempting to monopolize the related consumables market.

    We'd like to assist you with your XWFE filter. To have Leak-Detecting Sensing Technology, the XWFE filter uses a RFID sensor. The sensor communicates with the refrigerator controls and can display the following information: Filter Dry - Fill the filter with water before installing the filter. Filter Reaching Expiration or Expired - The Filter Status indicator light will flash red. - At 0% life, the filter will need changing. The refrigerator will continue to dispense ice and water; however, it will not be fully filtered water until you replace the filter. - To resolve, change the water filter or install the bypass plug with the RFID sensor. - Once changed to a new XWFE filter, the Filter Status LED will flash 3 times and the Filter Status indicator will turn OFF. Filter Wet - If the filter becomes wet, the signal will DEACTIVATE THE WATER VALVE to prevent worsening of the leak. - As a result, there will be no ice or water once the water valve is OFF. - The Filter Status indicator light will flash red. - A buzzing sound may be heard. - To resolve, change the water filter or install the bypass plug with the RFID sensor. - A new filter or the bypass plug with RFID will reactivate the water valve. Filter Installed Improperly - Beeping may occur when pressing on the paddle. - To resolve, try one of more of the following options: - Remove and re-install the XWFE filter. - Change to another XWFE filter. - Install the RFID bypass plug in place of the XWFE filter. - No Filter | Bad or Damaged Filter | Wrong Filter | Non-GE Filter - "ERR" will be displayed in the control. - The water valve is deactivated and there will be no water or ice dispensed. - The Filter Status indicator light will flash red. - A buzzing sound may be heard. - To resolve, a new filter or the bypass plug with RFID will reactivate the water valve. - Bypass Plug - Indicates the Bypass Plug with RFID is in place. No Filter | Bad or Damaged Filter | Wrong Filter | Non-GE Filter - "ERR" will be displayed in the control. - The water valve is deactivated and there will be no water or ice dispensed. - The Filter Status indicator light will flash red. - A buzzing sound may be heard. - To resolve, a new filter or the bypass plug with RFID will reactivate the water valve. Bypass Plug - Indicates the Bypass Plug with RFID is in place.

    We are happy to assist you with this water filter. When a new filter is replaced, we advise purging your water system to ensure normal water flow. You will need to dispense approximately 1-2 gallons of water to make sure all air is purged from the system and that the filter is operating as designed. If you continue to experience a plastic-like taste after dispensing approximately 2 gallons, please contact us for further assistance.

    I bought a replacement XWFE filter and trying to install it but the arrows don’t line up and I get an ERR message which means no water from the dispenser. After removing the newly bought filter I compared the two filters and notice a difference. See photo. Can someone explain what is going on?

    GE = Scammers Delight

    1 out of 5 stars
    NONYOURBUSINESS - 2 months ago
    originally posted on geappliances.com
    GE has done scammers everywhere proud on this product. If you purchase the GE branded XWFE water filter anywhere outside of a GE store once installed you will receive an error code and cannot use your water dispenser, even when you have a GE branded filter! This is because the filters GE sells to its vendors does not have a magnetic strip that clears that error code. So now GE has sold you a branded product that they know will not work and forced you to purchase the same filter from them for a premium price, so you pay twice, how nice.....FOR GE
    1 reply from GE_Appliances team - 2 months ago
    The pricing of parts are dependent on multiple factors. The economic elements can include distribution, warehousing, and availability, which account for a portion of the selling price of the part. You can also rest assured that when a water filter is purchased directly from us or one of our retailer partners, it is a genuine GE Appliances part. If you would prefer to not purchase filters for your refrigerator, we do offer free filter bypass plugs. If this is something that you are interested in, please reach out to us.

    Did the math and filter does not last 6 mo

    Colisalalia - 2 months ago

    This says it filters 170 gallons. As a half year is 182.5 days, that is less than a gallon a day. If you drink 8 glasses of water a day, that is a half gallon. So this will not even serve two people. So what about families and if you have guests? I will not last 6 months in many households. Does the 170 gallons count the water dumped as part of the installation?
    1 reply from GE_Appliances team - 2 months ago
    We'd like to assist you with your XWFE filter. The filter cartridge should be replaced every six months. However, it's possible it can be earlier if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases. Bad filters-carbon dust

    I bought the 3 pack XWFE filters. I have tried all 3, and each have continuous black carbon dust in the water. It is never ending. I used the bypass filter part, and after a week or so the black particles stop appearing. As soon as I use another of the filters, the black particles come back and are continuous.

    Absolutely criminal to mark up the price 200% on a simple water filter and make it impossible to use non OEM parts by use of an RFID tag. Unfortunately the only place I’ve found to get filters that actually work is here from GE themselves. Absolute garbage.

    We're glad to hear the XWFE filter was easy to install and working well for you! Pricing can be dependent on several factors. The economic elements include distribution, warehousing, and marketing costs, which account for a portion of the selling price of the part. Other factors like usability (cosmetic vs. functional) and availability also contribute to pricing. Unfortunately, in some cases, purchasing replacement parts can be less cost effective than replacing the appliance, especially with older appliance or small appliances like microwaves.
