Summary of reviews
This game offers a unique experience for Zelda fans, especially those who enjoyed Breath of the Wild. While it diverges from the open-world exploration of BOTW, it captivates with its engaging storyline, beautiful graphics, and hack-and-slash gameplay. The game is particularly enjoyable in two-player mode and provides a fresh perspective on the Zelda universe. However, guests should be aware that it is not a direct sequel to BOTW and focuses more on battles than exploration.

After botw we wanted to keep exploring the Zelda world. This was fun to see the characters again. But we didn’t really enjoy the game. If you are thinking about getting this because you love botw. Don’t think that is is the same.
I didn't enjoy it...

I don’t recommend this game to someone who hasn’t played BOTW. Other than that, get Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. It has more playable characters, is much more fun and has a simpler format. This game can also get laggy.

The game is just so pretty. The opening cutscene really did it for me lol. Recommend if you liked botw and also like lore, and ALSO liked hyrule warriors and hack + slash games.
Loved it!! Absolutely worth it!!!

loved it!! awesome game, I didn't expect it to be like breath of the wild. Those who did, I was like why?? The trailer clearly shows that it's not like. breath of the wild. Don't expect it to be like it. I loved the challenges of it. I'm excited to see what breath of the wild sequel will be like since the hyrule warriors changed the future. would totally recommend.

if you want to play a game like breath of the wild, go play breath of the wild. this game is nothing like it, aside from having the same characters. it's a hack-and-slash game that involves mashing about two buttons repeatedly until the level is over. HOWEVER!! what it lacks in gameplay, it makes up for a hundredfold in graphics and story. the color scheme and locations will be familiar for botw players, and while it doesn't have the polished look of the iconic game, it's still very nice to look at. the story is emotional, perfectly timed, and thought-provoking. the huge number of beautiful, interesting cutscenes made this game worth it for me; honestly, it's like a movie with some battles you fight in-between scenes. the story is squarely centered on zelda, and it follows her remarkable journey through the trials of her life. i'm enjoying playing through this game (so close to the end!), and i recommend it highly if you like rhythmic battles that don't take a lot of thought and story-focused games. it is a very short game, so that is something to take into consideration before you spend sixty bucks on it. overall, though, it's been a lot of fun, especially in two-player mode, so it's an excellent option if you want a new zelda game for your switch.
A good time!

I've had this game for months and only played a bit, but I can safely say, it's fun. My sister also made significant progress and can't wait to pick it back up. Sadly, life has been busy these days. It's great for Zelda fans and those who miss BOTW. The storytelling and battle mechanics are great. But be warned, after you've experienced Link's power in this game, going back to BOTW Link and charging at a Lynel right away might not be a good idea.

My Kids absolutely love this game! They like that you can play with a split screen. They enjoy breath of the wild, so this is super fun for them!

INCREDIBLE game to play after breath of the wild! It was so much longer than we had anticipated it would be, the story line is amazing and our whole family loved it! Worth every penny!
A story-driven prequel that can stand on its own

Age of Calamity is different enough from Breath of the Wild to stand on its own merits yet as a prequel it adds so much to the experience of those who have played BOTW. The game is not open world but instead has 100 v. 1 style stages that are based off of the BOTW map. It is very story-driven with beautiful cutscenes that have strong character development for Zelda, the Champions, and more. Age of Calamity was very enjoyable to play — a lot better than the original Hyrule Warriors. I have completed the game and am very excited for any future DLC while BOTW2 is still in development.
Love this game!

First: THIS GAME IS NOT A SEQUEL TO BOTW. It was never implied that it was. It was never meant to be. It’s a Hyrule Warriors game. There is a sequel to BOTW coming, but THIS IS NOT IT. Do not give this game bad reviews because you misunderstood the concept of the game and didn’t play the free demo before spending $60 on it. That being said: THIS GAME ROCKS! The play style is great, the number of characters you can play as is fantastic, and the story is incredible. Co-op is a ton of fun. Definitely worth the money!
Great Game, surprised that there are bad reviews

One of the best games I've ever played. I wasn't expecting some of these reviews to be as harsh as they are on this game, but I went in having different expectations if any at all. I wasn't expecting this to be exactly like BOTW like others were, I guess. I honestly would have been upset if it were the same game. I have BOTW why would I would I buy it again? This is a battle game, you basically go there is also a two player mode which is awesome and fun! The map is similar to BOTW, but the game play is different. If you were looking for an ecact replica of BTOW, this is not it, but it's still a fun game.

I would definitely recommend this game to people who like button mashing and battling your way through hordes of enemies, as seen in the age of calamity trailer it is completely different from breath of the wild’s exploration but still a very fun game and a really great story too.

It’s nothing like breath of the wild or any other adventure Zelda games. It’s a battle game. Read reviews before purchase!

What a disappointment. Nothing like the original Breath of the Wild. This game is more like Mortal Combat. It’s not an open world. It feels like they rushed this on to market. Even though it took a few years to make. Buyer beware. In my opinion, it’s not worth the price. I’ll gladly sell mine for a loss.
Nothing like BotW!

If you fell in love with Breath of the Wild and bought this without much thought, like I did, let me tell you - don’t. This is nothing like it. No exploring. No puzzles. No expansive beautiful world that rewards you for being creative. I would barely call this a Zelda game. I feel really dumb that I spent $60 on this without seeing what others thought first. Admittedly my poor review isn’t totally the game’s fault - I had the wrong expectations. But, if you like hack and slash games where you can button mash and destroy hordes of enemies - this is your game. That part is kind of fun. Just not what I was hoping for.
