About the Book

In 'Islam and Feminism', Paloma Hernández incisively analyzes all feminisms, and in particular the effects that so-called "Islamic feminism" can have in countries with a Christian tradition, especially in Europe. This essay traces the institutional expansion of this movement and warns of the risks it entails, presenting it as a proselytizing phenomenon, driven by groups calling themselves "progressive" and advocating religious militancy. A CULTURAL BATTLE IN THE HEART OF EUROPE. The author delves into an increasingly visible phenomenon in Europe -also in countries such as Canada and the United States-: young women who, through social networks, proudly display their conversion to Islam, defending their "individual freedom" and adopting new customs, including clothing and beliefs. "Islamic feminism" is ultimately presented as a factor of social dissolution, a "Trojan horse" facilitating the entry of Muslim fundamentalism into Europe. This reality is encouraging the emergence of ghettos where Sharia law, alien to the values of our societies - inherited from Greek philosophy, Roman law and Christianity - takes center stage. "The veil completely deindividualizes women, depersonalizes them and represents a symbol of the structural assignment of women to private space." Celia Amorós, Spanish philosopher, writer and essayist, feminist theorist. In 2006 she became the first woman to win the National Essay Prize.
