Q: Why use palm oil? Why mess with it and instead just stick to peanuts? Sad, Justin.
A: About 30-ish years ago when 100% peanuts-only peanut butter came on the market, after the jars sat on the shelf for just a few days, the ground peanuts (the butter) would settle and the peanut oil would rise to the top of the jar. The top 1/5 to 1/6 of every jar would be oil. Users could either spend 25+ minutes mixing the hardened butter and the oil into somewhat of a creamy paste or spend 5-8 minutes mixing the top half of the ground peanuts with oil (making a very, very oily PB. I remember pouring the oil off hoping to consume less fat. The first 2 to 3 scoops of the PB would be spreadable as the top was where the oil had separated and settled. The entire test of the jar would turn into a brick of ground peanuts -- so hard it could be sliced. Companies realized the problem and had to mix a hydrogenated oil into the butter to inhibit the separation. Otherwise, we'd be buying a jar of PB and constantly trying our best to mix the peanut oil into the butter every time we wanted PB. It's not ideal, but unless you are able to grind your own roasted peanuts before each use, this has become the compromise. There's always the option to go to a grocery store that has a grinder and having the machine grind your nuts, but if you do this, I strongly suggest you limit your purchase to 2oz or less. Otherwise, you'll be in the same predicament than prompted manufacturers to addhydrogenated oil to the slurry of ground nuts.
submitted byBea - 3 months agoA: The reason that we use palm oil is because it is a Non-GMO, non-hydrogenated oil that acts as a stabilizer and reduces oil separation. This means less stirring for you every time you dip into a jar! From the beginning, JUSTIN’S® has been focused on the responsible sourcing of all our ingredients, including our palm oil, and we are constantly pushing the supply chain for advancements in this area. We are members of the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm), the leading organization to date for sustainably sourced palm oil and JUSTIN’S® is proud to be among the companies who are actively involved and invested in supporting these initiatives. The palm oil used in our nut butter jars, squeeze packs and chocolate candy pieces is certified sustainable under a mixed supply chain model. In addition to their RSPO membership, our palm oil suppliers for our nut butters and nut butter cups have built their own independent sustainability policies, and the mass balance suppliers for our nut butters have plans to be fully traceable.
