If you have previous color on your hair it is difficult for another color to lighten through that deposit. The result is usually a brassy/orange or gold result. You can safely re-color within 24 hours to cover this up if you like as long as your hair and scalp are in good condition. If you choose not to color again, the best thing to do would be to shampoo with a regular shampoo, not for color treated hair. This will help the color lighten and fade.
