A: Yes, it works with LeapReader and some Tag books. The Leap Frog website Q&A has a list of the older books that are compatible.

Purchased this set of 10 books and a pen that does not work. It tells you “no audio” found and invites you to download something from a computer. Why does LeapFrog sell a SET of a pen and 10 books when a pen comes empty with no corresponding audio? There should be a clear disclaimer that says that this set comes with an empty pen that contains NO audio for corresponding 10 books included in a set!!!!!! Horrible !!!!!!!

I cannot say how this "Electronic" Leap Frog Reader worked because I received it in a very large box "Without Anything Packed Around It". To make matters worse, the box inside had creases where it rattled around this huge box. And, the box it was packed in was so dented up with holes, it looked like it had been dropped kicked several times & then karate chopped for perfect effect. But the insult to injury is that it arrived too late.

This thing is great in theory but the technology is stuck in 2008. Seriously having to use a USB cable to connect it to a laptop and download software is ridiculous. It took two hours of downloading, connecting and reconnecting the pen to my laptop to get it to work. To imagine doing this anytime we get a new book seems cumbersome. The price is good but I imagine there are more advanced technologies out there that would do the same thing for not much more.

I thought I was buying this as a new item. Went to wrap it for Christmas and realized the original tape was previously cut and a new piece of packaging tape was used to secure it. The instructions were on top, blocking the view of the books and several pieces of the packaging inside the box are visibly cracked, shifted, and not in their original spot. I did not open the box (didn’t want to cut the line piece of tape that was put back on it). The item is a return to store only and I’ll have to wait as the closest Target is an hour from my house. Returned items need checked for prior opening and integrity of the packaging. 3 stars for quality and value due to a product that seems previously used.

The description is misleading. This “pen” can only be used in very limited situations. Many other companies provide easier and less expensive ways for children to learn to read. The concept is fabulous, but the books are boring and lifeless with very few options beyond paying $30+ a book.

For the parents considering this system, I can tell you after 8 months of having it that is completely worth it. My daughter is 4yo and at first she didn’t show a lot of interest so it was me (mom) using the pen to read the books to her. Most illustrations have sounds around the page and my daughter loved that and started to follow the stories to later just picking the books and pen by herself. Yes you need to download the app and the books on a computer/laptop. I did all of them in one sitting probably took around one hour or less and didn’t have to worry about it never again. You don’t need to be connected to the internet to use it afterwards. Later I found an old edition book on Amazon that works with the stylus and my daughter can also practice writing!!! We take this everywhere, long trips, airports, restaurants, doctors office… and she remains entertained with no screens!

Nothing to dislike… I’ve always loved this system. My 17yo had one when he was in kindergarten. My 12yo USED it & now their sister is in kindergarten we needed a new system. She’s only had it a few days, during down time she grabs it instead of her iPad.
