I recently bought this penguin set at a local teaching store. I have LOVED it and so has my Pre-K son (4.5 years). Of course it's fun to just role play with the penguins. But there are many different ways to utilize the ice blocks & penguins. You can sort by colors, create patterns, improve counting skills, introduce adding/subtracting, count by 10's, and so on. We have loved the simplicity - no batteries, no fuss. All the pieces seem to be made of a hard plastic, which is pretty durable. Such a versatile game/teaching tool!

I'm a happy grandma of a 3 year old granddaughter who has been diagnosed with autism and development delays and learning resources products have her learning all while she thinks she's just playing!! So many ways we have used these penguins!! We've counted! There's 10 different colors! We've grouped the colors together! She's started to learn patterns! We've even started learning addition & subtraction! This is a product my little one will be able to grow with for years!

If I could recommend only one product, this is it! The set has so much to offer, from imaginative play with whimsical rubber penguins (you get 100!) to sorting them by color, to adding, subtracting, and acting out word problems. This set gives kids a tool to help understand abstract math in a very tangible way. Even the introduction of fractions can be done by placing 3 red penguins and 1 blue penguin to represent 3/4. The ice bars can be used separately, giving each child a way to count to 10, or they can be connected linearly to make a number line or in a grid to make a 100 board to help learn how to skip count, or count by 5s or 10s. The penguins are tall and friction fit onto the ice bars, providing stability in play - great for kids who have special needs. And using the ice bars, penguins can be placed on every other peg to give kids more room for their hands to place the penguins. The opportunities really are limitless. This set is well worth taking a good look at. It comes highly, highly recommended!

Perfect for teaching Math Common Core

I teach first grade. I have ten of these sets. You can use them for so many different common core math standards. I use the penguins to teach missing addend, using the game How many penguins in the cave? I use them to teach adding using three addends by adding three different color groups of penguins as well as story problems. Great for fact penquin families, too. The best part is, by taking a second set, and dividing it up among five other sets, I can actually have students manipulate up to 120. Link 12 ice bars together, and students can actually visualize 120. Perfect for common core for first grade. There are so many other games and standards I teach with it. Highly recommend this product.

Teaching colours is a fundamental part of young children's education in English and this little set finally goes beyond the 6 colour counters and presents 10 colours, allowing for sentence order of adjectives before noun, sequencing and a host of other uses and is perfect for my groups of maximum 10 kids. This is one of the best things I have ever bought from Learning Resources and my school is full of LR products.

AWESOME math learning tool!

I grew up learning math with those snap-together cubes where we would practice addition, subtraction, counting by 10 and other concepts. To me, those blocks were an extremely helpful learning tool so I was so excited when I saw this extremely cute spin off the traditional cube counting systems. These penguins are absolutely adorable and since they come in 10 different colors they can also be used for patterns and sequences as well! I absolutely love this set! It is really easy for both my 3 and 5 year old boys to use and such a colorful and fun concept that they love playing with it! I'll start a pattern for my 5 year old and he loves filling in and finishing off the pattern. We've worked on both addition and subtraction as well and I feel the visualization has made a huge impact on him picking up those skills! ** I received Penguins on Ice Math Activity Set free of charge to review on my website, A Mom's Take. Opinions are my own. **
