Q: Why is there a Proposition 65 cancer warning message on the package for THIS product? It's an external DVD player, not a petroleum carrier.

submitted by Joe - 4 years ago
  • A: Coffe is not a petroleum carrier either but two years ago a state court issued a ruling that requires a cancer warning on coffee under California's Proposition 65. But the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) decided the acrylamide dose in coffee is too low to be a carcinogenic risk. Recent action taken by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), and the U.S. Congress illustrate active resistance to state labeling laws that conflict with science-based nutrition information, including California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, better known as Proposition 65 (Prop 65). Prop 65, approved by California voters in 1986, requires warning labels on products sold in California for about 900 chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The statute was amended in September 2016, and the revised regulation took effect August 30, 2018, which only increased the burden on affected companies doing business in California. OEHHA is the agency that administers and enforces the statute in California. The statute itself allows private citizens, advocacy groups, and attorneys to sue on behalf of the state and collect civil penalties and attorneys’ fees for failure to provide required warnings. While the statute may have been viewed as well-intended and effective in certain instances, it is now regarded by many as lacking the necessary scientific support and thus unnecessarily burdening businesses, confusing consumers, and, in the instance of misleading food labeling, violating federal law. Coffee has been targeted by Prop 65 enforcers because of acrylamide, a chemical produced as a by-product of various high-temperature cooking processes (greater than 120 °C or 248 °F), including baking and roasting, particularly with carbohydrate-rich starchy foods but also in the roasting of coffee beans. Prop 65 notices of violation for acrylamide tripled between 2016 and 2017. Proposition 65 does not ban or restrict the sale of chemicals on the list. The warnings are intended to help Californians make informed decisions about their exposures to these chemicals from the products they use and the places they go. Proposition 65 is a "right to know" law based on the notion that members of the public have a right to know when they are being exposed to listed carcinogens or reproductive toxins. The law was designed to allow individual consumers and their families to decide for themselves whether to assume the chemical exposure risks of purchasing particular products or frequenting particular premises. A Proposition 65 warning informs a consumer that s/he is being exposed to carcinogens or reproductive toxins that exceed certain threshold levels. This is not the same as a regulatory decision that a product is "safe" or "unsafe." A consumer can seek information about the actual levels of exposure from the business that produces the product or causes the exposure in order to decide whether to accept, avoid, or take measures to mitigate the exposure risk. Proposition 65 has motivated businesses to eliminate or reduce toxic chemicals in numerous consumer products. Products that have been reformulated as a result of notices of violation or litigation include ceramic tableware, artificial turf, household faucets, children's jewelry, potato chips, candy, and vitamin supplements. Companies in every sector of the consumer economy now routinely attach warnings for any of the more than 900 chemicals and elements covered by Proposition 65, without testing for them or attempting to reformulate products. They fear citizen-enforcer lawsuits more than they fear freaking out customers. Because of the sheer number of listed chemicals and the minimal exposure levels triggering warning requirements, there are countless goods and services in California that fall within the purview of Proposition 65. Businesses which manufacture art supplies, car batteries, brass faucets, ceramic tableware, crystal, engines, household cleaning products, marine motors and power tools have all been subject to Proposition 65 enforcement actions. There have been attempts to expand the law to the sale of such seemingly innocuous products as chocolate, cigars, dental fillings, liquid paper, lamps and vinyl mini-blinds. The prospect of liability has resulted in the posting of warnings on products of all kinds and at entrances of public spaces such as hotels where one may come into contact with such a substance. A business can protect itself from Prop 65 liability by labeling its product or ensuring that the product does not require labeling. Often, a company does not know what chemicals are in the products it manufacturers, distributes or sells and, if a listed chemical is present, what level of exposure it creates. Even if a business is not certain whether a product requires a warning, it can choose to comply with the Prop 65 warning requirements as a preemptive measure. As e-commerce business continues to grow and inventory travels across state lines, it is not uncommon to see more companies put the labels on everything—even on items that aren’t necessarily bound for California—to avoid being sued. The Prop 65 label is like a noisy alarm that rings equally loudly about smaller amounts of low-risk substances and huge amounts of potentially harmful chemicals. The labels don’t say how much of the chemical is present, or how much it would really take to make a person sick. You could get the same alarming label on potato chips (acrylamide), chemotherapy (uracil mustard), lumber (wood dust), or toxic runoff (arsenic). It’s obviously helpful to be alerted to the presence of potentially harmful chemicals. But not all doses of these different chemicals mean the same thing. If you see a label and would like to understand more, reach out to the company’s customer service to find out what the chemicals in question are, and look up information about their risks from an organization you trust...^IFV

  • A: Do you live in California? EVERYTHING here has a prop 65 cancer warning due to extremely stringent state laws. They have to add that label so it can be sold in California.

I read the most recent reviews and considered not buying it but I’m glad I did. If you need a DVD reader just to watch something on a CD then it should be perfectly fine. Didn’t need to download any other apps or sign up for free trials. Plugged it into my mac, inserted the CD, and the video player popped up. If you’re looking to do anything more than that I don’t know if its capable so maybe do your own research.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Probably the last LG product I'll buy. Basically, they didn't update it for windows 11, I think I bought it for windows 10, when I buy an extra like this I want it to last but LG wants you to buy new. It's ridiculous for a perfectly good DVD drive to not work just because a company wants to make more money off of me. Sort of like the LG refrigerator I bought, it has a problem, LG created something to fix that problem, but since most people just throw the refrigerator out and buy new they just keep building new refrigerators that break, this has been going on for years. LG is a horrible company. If you're DVD player is going to be useless in a year or two you might as well buy a cheaper version, after all it's disposable.

Hello there, Kerry. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We understand how important it is for the SP80NB80 Slim External DVD Drive to operate reliably. If the unit isn’t functioning consistently, we recommend ensuring that the USB connection is secure and that the drive is plugged directly into a main USB port on your computer, as hubs or extension cables may cause intermittent issues. I bought this because I wanted to watch movies on my laptop and this DVD drive worked...for 30 days. After that you had to "Upgrade for Premium Features" like "Instant Karaoke" and "TrueTheatre" and it's $100 on top of what you already paid for the drive. NOWHERE on the packaging does it say that there is an additional purchase required after the "free trial" and it makes it seem like you only have to pay for the "premium features" if you want to and not the simple reading of a DVD. It was incredibly misleading and I really wish I could get my money back.

Hi, there. Thank you for sharing your experience with us regarding the LG DVD Drive (SP80) model. We understand your concern about the transition from a free trial to a paid upgrade for features like "Instant Karaoke" and "TrueTheatre" was unexpected and may have felt misleading. We strive to provide exceptional customer service and ensure our customers are well informed and supported throughout their purchase journey. To help resolve this, we recommend checking if the drive is functioning properly for basic DVD reading. Sometimes, a simple restart of your laptop or reconnecting the drive can help. The box says a CyberLink Media Suite for DVD is included, and the software DVD is labeled "OEM version." No mention anywhere that this is *trial* software and you have to spend at minimum $55 to get the full software once the trial expires. Looking through these reviews, I see that multiple other people have the same complaint, so maybe LG or Target will get the message. Unfortunately I missed the electronics return window at Target while I was discovering the trial-software issue, so I contacted LG, who apologized but refused to refund me. Thankfully, Target came through with a partial refund. (It's actually more cost effective for me to get a partial refund on this and buy a different manufacturer's DVD drive and included OEM software, just so I don't have to pay for the additional software.) Maybe there's something I'm missing as a non-tech-minded person, but to me, not clearly indicating trial software is false advertising, and I plan to steer clear of LG products in future. That said, the hardware itself does seem to work fine, so I'm giving this product one star.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I don't even remember buying this. Was cleaning out the office and found it in my travel stuff. I can only imagine it's been knocked around a bit. Plugged it into my Windows 11 machine, it worked immediately with no apparent problems. I updated the firmware as well. Played my Saving Private Ryan DVD just fine. Reviews being what they are I half expected it to damage the disk or something, but it's actually just fine.

I got this to rip CDs onto my laptop and it works amazingly! I had gotten a CD drive from Amazon and returned it because it worked very slowly and then not at all. I’m not sure how well this works with DVDs (writing or playing). Many of the reviews seem to struggle with DVD writing, but it works for my purposes

    Required Software is $80+

At first, I was able to download the required software to use this device, and it was free of charge. Then, it stopped allowing me to use the current software, and said that I needed to update the software to the latest version to watch movies again. When I clicked the link to update the software, the only option for me to download it was to pay $80. The original software was Cyberlink PowerDVD 22, and the new one was Cyberlink PowerDVD 23. I bought this DVD player thinking that I would only have to pay for the DVD player, so I was incredibly disappointed when the only option for me to use the DVD player was to pay an exorbitant amount for software that cost more than the DVD player itself. Be aware that, while the DVD player seems cheap, and it may work at first with free software, ultimately you will only be able to continue using it by paying an absurd amount of money for updated software.

It's very easy to set up, just plust and play (no driver or software download required), and it works great. If your laptop only has USB C ports, you'll need an adapter because the cable it comes with ends in an old fashioned USB A. The cable is also fairly short, less than 2 feet long, so I had to put the DVD player next to me on the couch. Now I can watch my old favorites without having to sign up for 5 different streaming services.
