Book Synopsis

WINNER OF THE 2023 TGC BOOK AWARD IN THE CHILDREN'S CATEGORY

"A delightful book to help our children understand how we are all different and we are also the same."--Trillia Newbell, author of God's Very Good Idea and The Big Wide Welcome

This children's picture book follows a sibling of a child with a disability as they go through their day. A simple story with an important message, Like Me helps kids recognize the many similarities they share with disabled kids and model a loving and understanding approach to the differences.

"God made you, God loves you, God is kind to you."

It can be hard for children to take those three life-changing truths into their hearts and treat others with love and understanding, especially when they encounter those whose needs differ drastically from theirs.

Through a sibling's eyes, young readers will tag along on a day of a child with a disability. As the two siblings play with friends, go to therapy, and spend time with family, relatable comparisons will help children understand a different type of family life, building empathy for children with disabilities along the way.

Like Me opens the door to meaningful talks with your child about empathy, compassion, diversity, and God's love for them and others.

Like Me is the latest children's book by mother, podcaster, and author, Laura Wifler. This book tells the story of two brothers and is from the perspective of the older brother. The older brother makes observations about his younger brother and what his life is like with disabilities. This story gives readers a glimpse of the good and the hard parts of what it is like to live with someone who has disabilities. I love the message of Like Me which is that all humans are created with dignity, value, and worth as they are created in God’s image for His glory. Another aspect of the book that I enjoy is the artwork. The illustrations are modern and moody and while this is a children’s book, I believe adults will benefit from reading it too! My family loves Like Me and we can’t wait to read more by Laura Wifler in the future. I received Like Me compliments of Harvest House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

As a mother of a child with disabilities, this story was incredibly meaningful to me- the author paints beautiful picture of sharing life with a disabled person and how they are loved and valued and have so much to offer. Thankful for books like this!

This is such a sweet book (my 3-year-old loves it) about a child and his brother with disability. It is a great story to introduce kids to what life is like for another child with disability (or a relatable story for those who are familiary with disability as a part of their lives). It is a great conversation-starter! The illustration is so fun, with lots of hidden details that kids love to point out.

Beautiful story with gorgeous pictures. My kids and I love reading this book and it has sparked a lot of good conversations about disabilities and to appreciate the beauty in everyone. I felt unprepared to answer some of my kiddo’s questions but this book and Laura Wifler’s instagram account have helped us a lot

Laura Wifler continues to impress me with her ability to speak the truth in grace and love. This book does such a wonderful job of placing my kids (and me) in the home of a child with disabilities and pointing us towards the truth that we are all made in God's image, but also drawing the specifics of how we show that in the way we talk and think of each other.

This is a fantastic addition to Laura’s first book. My children haven’t been exposed to many children with disability so it brought up a lot of good conversations! This book will surely impact the next generation! And, the art is beautiful!

What a special book to read to anyone and everyone. Such a great message to teach kiddos (and adults) about how all kids just want to be loved, accepted and included. Great message.

An empathetic and rich narrative that helps celebrate God's goodness in all kinds of people! Written in an engaging way that our 2, 4, and 6 year old ask to read it again and again! We are so grateful to have this book in our home to teach them such valuable truth!

Laura Wifler does such a great job in her newest book on disability - walking us through a day in the life of a child with disabilities. It is such a sweet story that depicts a therapy waiting room, a physical therapy session in a gym, mealtimes, playtimes and the in-between times too. As parents/caregivers of a daughter with disabilities, this book is a true reflection of what we believe about her disabilities and the truth that we speak to her and her siblings. Whether you’re looking to supplement your classroom with children’s books on disability, or your Sunday school class, your home or as a gift for friends, this IS the book to buy.

Walks the reader through the day in the life of an older brother whose sibling has global disabilities. I think the book is a great tool to increase my (non-disabled) kids' awareness and empathy. We also LOVED the illustrations with their cozy, wintery feel!

This book is sooooo good. The writing and artwork are both beautiful, and the message is so needed. One of our sons has disabilities, and this book had us crying. We know that God made him, but picture books have a way of solidifying truth for kids. This is a must-read for every family, to help them know the truth of our loving Creator and to see that creating in each human being. We have used some of Laura’s phrasing in our family, and it has been so helpful. Our kids have even started saying it to other people! I can’t recommend this book enough, whether you have disabilities in your home or not. Well done, Laura and Skylar!

This book is a must-have for all families. As a Mom of two kids without disabilities, this book gave me natural opportunities for questions and conversations with my kids. I was able to help my kids reconcile with the fact that some kids are created perfectly, even if they are "different." Unique Gospel-centered story for families who are directly impacted by disabilities as well as for those who aren't.

I have followed the author for a long time and trusts what she writes. I wanted a book that would help foster conversations between myself and my young son, who is very curious about the world and people around him. This is a beautiful book with pictures that reflect different abilities and I loved the story of two brothers who although different, the older brother sees all the ways he’s actually like his little brother. I am glad to add this one to our bookshelf.

Great story for all children learning to see others in a new way

The storyline of Like Me addresses a lot of important and difficult subjects about interacting with people that may experience the world differently, but in a simple and enjoyable storyline for children of all ages. All readers will likely see themselves in one of the characters, while also being challenged to broaden their perspective by hearing of other's normal rhythms of life. The text can be enjoyed at face value, but also opens the doors for deep conversations as readers connect what they're reading to what they see in their lives

Inclusive, educational book that is beautifully written. This book is such a gift! As a parent to a child with a disability, Laura put to words so many things I would want to tell to others and hope to teach our older kids as well. My oldest daughter had so many great and appropriate questions over the photos that lead to great discussion. Laura covers so many different types of disabilities and challenges a child may face in Like Me. The ultimate message of these children are “like me” is spot on. This book should be available in every classroom and library.
