Q: I use the medela 16mm nipple shield which fits right, I don't see that available for flange size. What size flange should I use, 21mm seems to be the smallest but will be 5mm bigger than my nipple size

A: Hello Heather--- There are a couple of ways to determine breast shield size. One way is to go off of the size you are currently using. If your nipple moves freely in the tunnel with little to no areola getting pulled into the tunnel that is the correct size. If a lot of areola gets pulled in you may need to go a size smaller and if your nipple rubs on the tunnel you may need to go a size bigger. The 24mm ones that pumps come with are too big for me and I end up having to hold them or they leak. There is less pressure on my skin with these, and I don't have any problem with less suction. The bigger size gives me trouble with comfort, leaking and suction, so make sure you are getting the proper fit. I ended up asking a lactation consultant for help. The first set i got lasted 2years, and there isn't anything wrong with them.

I’m currently trying to breast feed and pump and these are terrible. The one the pump comes with are better for suction just to big of flange size. Overall if u plan on pumping a lot I recommend momcozy pump

Would not recommend over the fully plastic shields. They don’t seem to properly suction to breast and thus do not pull as much milk from the breast. I can pump twice as much milk in half the time with the plastic shields.

I was so excited for these, they cup the breast so comfortably. But the space for the nipple is sooo short, it is ridiculous. So many women have some degree of nipple elasticity these days, how did Medela not consider that these need to be 2-3 times longer in order to be used. They are worthless to me because of this design flaw. It would be so easy to make these with a longer tube to hold the nipples. The length of the original size 27s is perfect (but I would love to see that length on the 24s.) Come on Medela!

If you have nipple elasticity these will not work. Your nipple will hit the end of the flange rendering it useless. Milk will not come out because the nipple cannot be fully “pulled”. And since it’s such a personal item I don’t feel comfortable returning it. Waste of money. The old flanges were so much longer!

When I received my breastpump at the hospital, the shields in the kit were too big. Thankfully, Target had these in stock! I originally ordered two packages of them, thinking there was only one shield per package, but there are two shields in each package. Apparently I missed the fine print. It worked out though, as now I can wash a set and have another set ready for use. The silicone edges are very comfortable on the breast tissue and the shields clean and sterilize easily.

I got the 21 MM like the silcone around the edges. But the way the funnel is built i dont like the new medela sytle. I like the old ones wear you can see the position of your nipples. And Medela needs to make a smaller size than 21

I use these with my Pump in Style. Moving to this size helped my milk supply. I do wish the cups fit a bit better, but they are much preferred over the flanges that came standard with the pump. I have 2 sets for reduced cleaning time while on an exclusive pumping schedule.
