I'm so tired of Monoprice begging me to give a review of their crummy speaker. If I'd have know what I was in for, I'd never have purchased a Monoprice speaker. I can't get them to stop sending me spam emails pleading for a review.

I've used this less than 30 times between music and movies in 1.5 years. One day I noticed it was just sitting there making a continuous small popping sound. It will not play any sound out of the subwoofer. Something in the amp has went. No response to my emails asking what the problem could be. Not happy. Will not buy from them again. Cannot recommend monoprice subs to anyone now.

I had purchased two at the same time. After two years of low use they both fail at the same time. They started to pop then nothing. I contadted Monoprice and ask do they sale replacement parts? No they do not but offrered me a $30 discount on a new purchase. Now would you buy another one of these bricks?

This was recommended by the NY Times. I'd not heard of Monoprice before. I bought the SW-12 to upgrade an older stereo 2.0 Bose system that had a non-powered subwoofer. As my Sony amplifier had only "speakers out" (no dedicated sub or audio out), I tried that first. The SW-12 manual indicated that choice was the least desirable, and it was correct: performance of the SW-12 was mediocre. But I subtracted 1 star for that. So I then got a new Onyko amp with dedicated subwoofer output. A huge difference! Really deep, feel-it-in-the-chair bass. But bass distribution throughout this large room was not uniform. I needed to move it about 20' to the back corner. But hardwiring was a problem. So I got the DYNASTY WSA-5TR bluetooth for subwoofer device. Wow it's very good with no perceptible latency. So now I have the original Bose non-powered sub in the front of the room, the SW-12 in the back, and uniform bass throughout the room. Now if only all my music was equally balanced!
Glad I bought it.

Larger than I expected but I found a place for it. Not the easiest to set up with a new receiver/tuner but once my son got it set up the sound has been great and what I expected.
Bang for your buck.

1st thing is I purchase two of them. Wow!! what a great balance POP to my existing old 2005 system. This subwoofer has to be dial into whatever system you have, and results are great sounding subwoofer. No don't just buy one of these bad boys.. Buy two as a set. trust me you will not regret it at all. I used Anti-Vibration Isolator Pads Heavy Duty Blue EVA Pads to raise them even higher off the floor. If the port is pointed towards the floor, raising the sub. will give it even a greater effect. This sub is one bad Sub. Even better then Polk audio psw505 which are twice and a half more expensive.
No idea how they do it

I?m not an audiophile but usually have a rather expensive taste when it comes to audio equipment. I bought this subwoofer only as a temp solution because I actually want to buy an expensive DSP-Controlled woofer. But I desperately want it in white and that?s hard to get. Now that this woofer is so good I?m wondering if I should just stick with it and repaint it. No idea how they can sell it at this price point without going bankrupt.

I purchased this to replace a Polk Audio PSW505 that I had enjoyed for five years. The current prices on the PSW505 are crazy (I paid $175), so I shopped around for something in the $200 price range. After hooking up the Monoprice SW-12 to the exact same setup I ran with the Polk, I was absolutely underwhelmed. I spent a considerable amount of time attempting to tune the Monoprice and the only way I could get any sound out of it was to essentially turn the volume all the way up. I even increased the db setting on my receiver. I have it in the exact same location as the old Polk and the sound is not even comparable unless I turn the volume to the Max. For reference, the Polk was turned up to half volume and it put out plenty of bass. As it stands, I cannot recommend this sub for music or movies unless you turn the sub's "Volume Level" setting on the actual unit, to Max. I allowed time for "break in" as well and played various music types including bass heavy rap to move the woofer for extended periods of time. All in all, I don't feel comfortable leaving it set on Max, but that's the reality of it.
Product didn?t work, still waiting on a replacement.

The subwoofer didn?t work, it just made a clicking sound. When I contacted Monoprice they asked me to try a different cable, so I had to go buy an additional cable. The subwoofer still had the same issue with a different cable. Had to return it and have not received a replacement.

This subwoofer sounded horrible when I received it. After some frustration I decided to take everything apart to find the reason it sounded so horrible. It was all the components on the plate amp were leaking air through, it wasn?t sealed properly from the factory. The biggest leak was where the power cord came through. 1 tube of silicone on the inside of the plate amp and now it work and sounds like it should.
This is a solid "budget" amp! Loud, clear, and awesome!

I already had this subwoofer's big brother, the Monolith 10". But, I didn't want something that expensive, nor that powerful, for my bedroom system. However, I did want a subwoofer that would be able to handle all the low frequency sounds, plus get a bit loud if needed. This subwoofer is everything I wanted. First, I think it should be noted that this subwoofer has a very powerful amp which helps a lot! Low bass notes require a lot of energy to push and the amp in this sub is 400 watts, powerful enough to do the job! It doesn't get quite as low as my Monolith amp does. However, we can't really hear those notes that are that low, but we can feel them. That being said, this subwoofer gets quite low. The specs say it can reach down to 33 Hz which is almost as low as we can hear. The subwoofer can reproduce rumbles for earthquakes and explosions very well and also handles music with aplomb. I think the sound is not as tight as the Monolith, but its quite acceptable to my ears. It is ported on the bottom which helps it get those low notes. It has a switch to change phase, too. Basically, I see this amp as a smaller, less featured version of the Monolith. If you are putting together a home theater and need a subwoofer, but can't afford a Monolith, then this is a great substitute. I recommend it without hesitation to anyone looking for good bass without breaking the budget.

I bought this subwoofer to replace my existing 8" Velodyne Deco. Based on other reviews I expected it to easily provide more sound to fill my room. After setting it up and running the Audyssey setup on my Denon I tried it out. I was not impressed. up close the sound was good, but more than 10 feet away you hardly hear it. I adjusted the physical position, EQ and crossover, volume, etc. and couldn't find a good balance. The only way to get enough volume in the room is to adjust the volume to 75%, but then the port starts fluttering and making distracting noises. I put my 8" Velodyne next to it just to make sure there wasn't something set up wrong. Other than the Monoprice having a lower frequency response, the Velodyne sounded better. Also, the cabinet has white marks all over it. It looks like sealant was on the assembler's glove. Overall I'm not impressed and would return if return shipping didn't cost almost half as much as I paid for the speaker. I have bought several other Monoprice speakers in the past and found the cost vs. performance good. This speaker changed my mind and dropped Monoprice down on my list.
Great subwoofer - perfect with with my other Monoprice speakers.

Amazing subwoofer for the price, I have the big brothers in the home theatre room so I decided to try these out in my living room/gaming room and these are almost as good as the monolith's. They almost pressurize the room, the Monoliths get lower and louder but these are pretty amazing for the price. I would highly recommend.
Crazy price for what you get.

At $200, this is a steal. Very good for movies. It can bottom out, but it will rattle windows. The build quality isn't superb, but it works. If anything I may open this up and put some bracing or polyfill in it just to get some of the resonance to go away.

Have you ever had annoying neighbors living above, below, or right next to you constantly playing their stereo too loud? Well great news because this behemoth will help you level the playing field and make those plebian neighbors realize who they are messing with. If you are interested in taking it even further I would suggest the 15 inch version of this subwoofer as it will really knock their pictures off the wall.
