Bought 3 for Fire station
5 out of 5 stars
TechFire - 2 years ago
originally posted on netgear.com
Our internet was poor at our local fire station in South Florida. we were using a combination of 3 old Wi-Fi routers, one main and two set up as access points. I believe one was even a Wi-Fi 4 model so they struggled with 12 people on shift with an average of two devices each person connected to the Wi-Fi both in terms of coverage and speed. Our speeds were 6 mbps down and 1 up so it was a terrible experience until we finally upgraded to this Orbi RBK753S and upgraded our ISP service. We decided to purchase three sets so we have 5 satellites currently connected to one main unit all via Ethernet since the fire station is wired for various purposes and two spare main RBR routers and one RBS satellite not in use as backups. The Netgear Orbi mesh unit has yet to go down and we installed back in January of 2023. Currently have 28 devices connected and receiving on average 150 mbps down and 30 mbps up. Couldn’t recommend this Orbi system more. It even goes beyond covering residential home use and could be used for industrial/small business use such as a local fire station. Easy setup, took less than an hour for our particular setup. And we can now watch Netflix and stream music where as before we were lucky to even be able to send a work email.
My WiFi frustration is over!

I’ve had this for 3 months now and I am absolutely thrilled to bits with the system. WiFi is now something I have forgotten about, no more frustrating blind spots, no interference and absolutely no drop off in performance. My option was this or a Netgear Nighthawk with 5 WiFi extenders, I now just have Orbi and two extenders covering my 3 storey 200 year old solid stone construction house. In the past 20 years I have tried everything and spent a fortune, Orbi just works from the minute you plug it in. Pleased is an understatement.

I used to have to reboot my old mesh devices up to 3 times a week. It's now been up and running a whole week and there's no sign of instability at all. I wish I hadn't waited so long to buy this product.

Finally made the move to switch our internet, and needed a mesh system to send signal throughout four floors. This system was so easy, so stylish, and delivers great signal everywhere in the house. Our son is an avid gamer, with a very expensive PC, and he has experienced great performance, with no weak signals. I think it actually enhanced our speed and connectivity. Highly recommend to all! Thank you! Recommended to my father, who has a 6,000 SF 150-year-old home with brick and plaster walls, and he just purchased the Orbi 6000 system. He will be setting up soon, but I am sure he will love it just as I love the 4200.

Bought the RBK 752 system about a month ago and have to say it has solved all of of our WiFi problems ! We have 21 devices including 4 Fire Tv , Ring Doorbell , Ring Cameras and 8 Alexa devices all working flawlessly and never dropped WiFi while streaming even in 4K . Our WiFi speed has even increased from 50-60 Mbps to over 221 Mbps at every location in our house ! Couldn’t ask for anything more , satisfied customer.
Fast internet. Horrible app. Difficult to manage.

Replaced my Google WiFi with the Orbi because I needed better throughput. The internet is faster but managing the network through the app is close to impossible. The best way is through a browser but, since I do everything on my phone, the screen is very small. Also, I have 5 children and there is no way to group devices based on the child, schedule time limits, and restrict certain sites based on their age like Google WiFi can. If you're a network engineer, you'll like all of the functionality. If you're a typical homeowner who just wants to connect devices, have fast internet, manage time limits, and have strong default security settings, this is not the router you want.

No parental or individual device control

There isn't a native parental control or the ability to individually manage devices on the platform. Will be returning the device for others in the same price range that has the software options to support the price point.

Hi Car862, We will be releasing smart parental controls for the Orbi Wifi6 through a firmware update. For now, chapter 4 of the user manual reviews the options to control access to the internet. https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK752/RBK752_UM_EN.pdf Please let us know if this resolved your issue by updating your review. I bought this, thinking wrongly that as a Netgear mesh system, would have the parental control they announce; however it doesn't have it. It's incredible that with the technology included in this device, Netgear haven't developed a simple software to control schedules and content for the kids. The target for this technology is especially big houses, and commonly there are kids in big houses, so I can't give more than 3 stars, considering this critical issue.

Hi Disappointed Father, Thank you for your review. We understand that parental controls are an important feature and we will be releasing a firmware update to include smart parental controls. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience. Thank you

I purchased about a year ago and worked great out of the box but over time has quit supporting internet as well as all of our connected devices I have tried tech support I have tried resetting but nothing seems to work. We are relying on our comcast supplied modem/router to handle everything now and that at least gets us consistent connection close to unit. Extremely disappointed in this product. I heard such great things about netgear and orbit.

Beware: despite the pics in their website showing this orbi has parental control, this orbi does not actually have parental control. Someone from their company has been responding to many comments that parental control is coming in a firmware for last 1 year+. . Should have trusted the comments before buying.

I purchased and couldnt be an easier installation. Speeds are as advertised. Coverage is as advertised. Super fast system. No complaints on the actual wifi portion. Biggest ISSUE BY FAR is that the system does not stream Netflix. I have roku, firesticks, chromecast, chrome books, windows and apple systems running in my house. (I know... pick a tech .... right?) Orbi streams Netfix on none of them. I know it is the Orbi.... I streamed fine prior, and when I hook my Nighthawk back in, Netflix streams again. Even tried to hardwire to orbi router to my TV / lap top with cat 7 communication cable. Spent tens of hours over a month on the phone and online with tech support. No resolution. Busy because work from home... COVID....etc.... tech support ran out. I purchased this very expensive system to streaming wireless to all my TVs instead of having cable boxes. It does not do that. (RBK753) This Orbi system is garbage. Note: Using netgear C1100 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable modem. Should be no speed or integration issues. Also, additional antivirus software (non netgear) is not easily loaded. Netgear wants you to only use theirs. Dont pay, network is more open to hackers.

This was great for the first couple of months. Then it had a software update which causes my nest thermostat battery to drain. I have to take my thermostat off the wall and charge it every other day at least. It’s been a known issue that netgear is aware but for whatever reason hasn’t/won’t fix. For a “premium” Wi-Fi experience I would expect better. So smart home users look elsewhere

Have been using the 753 model (router + 2 satellites) in a 3 story 4200 ft. home for 4 days. Very satisfied. There was a slight learning curve to position the satellites in their optimal location to increase strength of signal. One clue: The Orbi app includes a wifi speed test that only measures the speed from your provider to the router. This is misleading because what we all want to know is how much signal is reaching the devices we are using. By using the wifi speed app provided by your wifi provider on your phone, tablet or laptop, you will get an actual mps reading to the device you are using, which will help you better more optimally position your router and satellites.

Got the 850 Orbi: Large home, ICF walls, lots of devices and kids. This system solved all the problems.... no buffering, no freezing, seamless connection no matter where the devices are roaming around, takes advantage of the gigabyte speed offered by my internet provider. Everything is lightning fast. If you hardwire directly to the router with a Cat 7 or Cat 8, we are talking serious speed. Took 10 minutes to set up. Loved the security features of the Armor software so added a subscription for that after a week. Loved getting an alert if a new device logged on.

A concerning lack of customizability

originally posted on netgear.com
You are forced to use a combined SSID: you can't split out the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels. Among causing other problems, this means that if you have smart devices and other "Internet of Things" devices you may struggle to get them connected. There are no QoS (Quality of Service) options: if you want to be able to prioritize certain devices (such as a gaming pc over a tv streaming Netflix), or at least tell the router what your internet speed is so it can divide it up properly, you'll get none of that with this router. The only thing you can do with the QoS is have the router "automatically" detect your bandwidth to try to divide it up properly using its own secret algorithms. Except the router cant detect bandwidth properly. Mine decided that I get 400 mbps down (a gross overestimation) and 10 mbps up (a gross underestimation), so the QoS isn't working right whatsoever. Want to set up a daisy-chain of the satellites? You can... but you have to trick the satellites into connecting to each other instead of to the router, through strategic placement and an unreliable process. Want to telnet or SSH into the router for further customization? Nope. And these are just the points I feel I need to call out because if you read about other Orbi routers, or Nighthawk routers (both Netgear products) or even read a slightly older manual for this product online you may think you'll have these options. But they do not exist anymore. Netgear is gutting the customizability of its routers. I would not recommend this router to anyone until they do a massive overhaul to the firmware.

Hi Kevin, Thank you for your review. The smart connect is a feature that can not be disabled on the Orbi but there are ways around some devices connecting to one band over another. We will link a resource from our community that might help your situation: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Best-way-to-add-2-4-gHz-ONLY-devices-to-Orbi-mesh-network/m-p/1737886 Thank you
