Book Synopsis

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER - A Next Big Idea Club Must Read - As seen in Oprah, FastCompany, LA Times, Forbes, BigThink, CNBC & more

A life-changing guide to finding true happiness from author Stephanie Harrison, whose revolutionary new approach to well-being has changed the lives of millions around the world.

You feel unworthy, anxious, lonely, lost, insecure, or empty. You wonder, "Isn't there more to life than this?" and "When will I finally be happy?" And you blame yourself.

But it's not your fault you feel this way. You have been affected by Old Happy: society's warped definition of happiness. It has made you believe that, in order to be happy, you need to perfect yourself, work harder and harder, and do everything alone.

Old Happy is making you--and all of us--miserable. It's time to free yourself and experience the true, lasting joy that you deserve.

In New Happy, happiness expert Stephanie Harrison deftly and compassionately challenges our conventional wisdom, drawing upon hundreds of scientific studies to definitively prove that we are pursuing happiness in all the wrong ways.

Harrison illuminates the path out of Old Happy, showing you the surprisingly simple steps that will bring you joy, purpose, and love--and how these choices ripple out to change the world for the better, too.

Based on ten years of research, and brought to life with beautiful artwork that explains the book's key concepts, New Happy will teach you how to:

- Accept and love yourself, exactly as you are
- Break free of the pressure to follow a specific path in life
- Experience more love, connection and belonging
- Discover your extraordinary gifts, talents, and strengths
- Tap into your powerful internal motivation and do what matters most to you
- Overcome loneliness and find your unique place in the world
- Make the world a better place, starting right where you are

This isn't just a book. It's a transformative journey that will help you understand yourself and how to live your best life. With practical, step-by-step guidance based on the latest science, New Happy's revolutionary approach to happiness is what you--and our world--have been waiting for.

Stephanie is on the nose with this work. She conducted significant research to provide empirical-based studies and qualitative examples demonstrating her framework. Simultaneously, she straightforwardly relays the material with simple applications in the real world. The book breaks down societal values that set us up for failure in our pursuit of joy. It then acknowledges the pitfalls of perfectionism AND how to combat this detrimental mindset in our daily lives. Then a blueprint is provided on how to find purpose and put it into action. The illustrations in the book reinforce these concepts making the material memorable and tangible. My only criticism is that it would have been nice to have footnotes rather than a separate website for the references in the text. I look forward to updating this review after reading the bonus materials.

This book is life-changing. It's a paradigm shift in how we view happiness. But this isn't some "woo-woo," feel-good stuff. The author has extensively researched happiness and supports all of her claims with data and studies. This is an easy-to-read book that will reframe how you view happiness.

This book absolutely has the power to change lives and, in turn, change the world. For the last couple of years, I've followed author Stephanie Harrison's Instagram account, The New Happy. With every post, I've been struck by her power to take big topics and common struggles and turn them into appealing graphics that offer support to her followers. When I found out she was working on a book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! Now that I've (finally) finished reading it, I can say without a doubt, this is a book I will continue to revisit and reread. This is a book I will think about and a book I will talk about. Everyone should take the time to read New Happy, because the world would be so, so much better for it. Stephanie took the work she was doing on Instagram and magnified her message. The book is gorgeous. It is full of the beautiful graphics she's known for, as well as tons of well researched information about happiness. It's enjoyable and thought provoking.

I've been following Stephanie Harrison on Instagram for years and love how she brilliantly combines her psychological background and research with beautiful and compelling artwork. I've learned so much from her instructional and thoughtful posts and was thrilled when she announced she was writing “The New Happy.” Imagine a book that blends art and science, making the reading experience both educational and enjoyable but also giving you concrete motivation and steps to make new, positive changes in your life. That’s one of the many reasons I adore this book. So what is “The New Happy”? "It’s a fresh and insightful approach to achieving happiness by challenging common societal misconceptions. Stephanie shows how traditional notions of happiness, the "Old Happy," are misguided and often leave us feeling unfulfilled. And these misconceptions include the beliefs that happiness depends on achieving fame, wealth, and power, and that it is an individual pursuit. Instead, she provides a new, compelling and relatable roadmap for “The New Happy” so that we can both understand the principles of true happiness but also feel inspired to apply them in our daily lives. One of the strongest elements of The New Happy is that the color-popping visual elements help illustrate complex concepts. Her drawings constantly makes me think “Yes, exactly” or “You read my mind” or “That is so incredibly helpful.” And there is such a universal appeal because the focus of the book is on fundamental human values such as self-acceptance, purpose, and community. I find it especially meaningful that these themes resonate across different life stages, so that this book is relevant for anyone, everyone, everywhere! It would be helpful to read as a young adult navigating career choices, a parent teaching children about happiness, or someone undergoing a significant life transition. Truly anyone. And if you know someone in need of a boost, space for reflection or a meaningful change in their life, this book is for them! The visual aids in the book, which include beautifully designed artwork, serve to clarify and reinforce the key points discussed in each chapter. These illustrations are extra helpful for visual learners and also make the content more engaging for younger readers. Each artwork breaks down ideas into more digestible pieces, making the science of happiness more approachable and less daunting. I would give “The New Happy” 15 stars if I could! It’s my go-to book for family, friends and my clients. Thank you Stephanie so much and congratulations!

I can’t exactly remember how, but somewhere along my journey I found The New Happy account on Instagram, and as a very visual learner, the posts immediately sucked me in. Now, The New Happy is a book, and it’s far more than a continuation of the social media account - no, the account was merely the foundation - this book is the rest of the house. As someone who feels things very deeply, and yet struggles so hard to even know what it is that I’m feeling – The New Happy has been so helpful. This book has a clever way of excavating the truths I’ve learned over the years (compiled from numerous self-help books, podcasts, and blogs) – and resurfacing them to a point of conscious awareness that helps me remember who I am; a conscious soul with a choice in how I treat myself, my thoughts, my emotions, and those around me. I LOVE that Stephanie found a way to incorporate her colorful shapes and visuals into the book – as it turns out, adding such color-rich components can prove to be quite challenging in book publishing, so I am VERY grateful it worked out. They’re nice to look at, yes, and having a visual certainly helps to cement the concept in your mind, but this color combination also carries such a deep meaning – life is so much more expansive than the black and white polarity of thinking that is deemed common-place among the masses. There is so much richness in the colors that lie in-between, and when we open ourselves up to perceiving it, we can find that vastness folded into the nuances of our everyday thinking. The world has been needing this book. The human race has been needing this book. We ALL have been needing this book. And Stephanie delivered. 10/10. Highly recommend.

The best book about happiness in our lifetime

"When was the last time YOU felt genuinely happy?" I asked myself as I devoured every word of New Happy: Getting Happiness Right in a World That's Got It Wrong by Stephanie Harrison. I tried to pinpoint what happiness feels like in my mind and body: a challenge that's much greater than it may seem. As I sat and reflected, plenty of moments came to mind—elementary and middle school award ceremonies, high school graduation, multiple 4.0 semesters, 100% on exams, college graduation, my first job, buying a house, achieving a six-figure salary—but what I quickly realized is that while I felt proud of myself in these moments, I didn't necessarily feel happy. I did what I was "supposed" to do and enjoyed the external validation that came with it. In the book's first two parts, I learned that these grandiose achievements are set by what Stephanie refers to as 'Old Happy' culture, a paradigm of happiness based on societal expectations. My life, too, has 'Old Happy' written all over it. The book then introduces the concept of 'New Happy,' a new way of living for lasting happiness that is not dictated by external achievements but by internal fulfillment. The book is divided into five parts: two about Old Happy and three about New Happy (specifically happiness, uncovering your gifts, and serving the world). But acknowledging and unwinding Old Happy is just the half of it. In the rest of the book, Stephanie weaves beautiful stories of well-known and lesser-known figures living the New Happy philosophy (a new way of living for lasting happiness) based on a decade of research and analysis. She pairs them with tactical advice for readers to ponder about their own lives, behaviors, mindsets, and values that they can work through insightfully immediately. Reading this book unlocked a world of opportunities I hadn't realized before. Day by day, I'm discovering my gifts (talent, humanity, and wisdom) as she outlines so eloquently in her book, broadening my thinking about my impact and life values. And I'm searching for New Happy wherever I go—looking for ways to help others, exploring how I can show up for my people in new ways, and leaving the world better than I found it. This is the most selfless self-help book you'll ever read. If you want to change your life (and the lives of those around you), don't overthink it. New Happy: Getting Happiness Right in a World That's Got It Wrong by Stephanie Harrison will get you there. Grab your copy ASAP!

Last year I went through one of the most hardest time of my life. I even questioned whether I wanted to live a long life or not because life had felt so difficult up until this point. I only had turned 30 and had realized that the goals I had set for myself merely set by others for me or they were my goals but felt unattainable because of the world we lived in. I have always been one that is chasing to do better for myself and rediscovering who I am. When I had the chance to read, it was a game changer. She really provides so many different tools, ideas, nuggets, studies, experiences, and so much more. It has been such a wonderful, life changing experience reading this book. With so much happening in the world, and in our own little worlds - we forget to take care of ourselves, communities, and be happy. This really is a game changer for a millennial and gen-z - especially when you’re so tired from the news, media, work, life, everything. I encourage you to read this. And if you’re still really not sure, then I really just suggest you follow Stephanie’s instagram page @newhappyco, read her articles, and subscribe to her newsletter. She really is a gem and so is this book.

This isn't just another book about happiness. This is the book. Not only is it based in all sorts of research, it gets at the heart of the problem of why we're not happy. You get all of the tips to help you start feeling better immediately, but also the bigger guidance about addressing the root cause and core problems in a more meaningful way in your life. I walked away inspired, uplifted, and feeling hopeful about the world and how I can help. Quite simply one of the best nonfiction books out there.

I was so happy when I heard that Stephanie Harrison was writing a book. I've been following her work for several years and find that she does a spectacular job of explaining the science around The New Happy and then breaks down how to achieve it. And her graphics are a must-view on my social scrolling. "New Happy" is vulnerable, relatable, and practical. She opens up with her own personal story which sets the stage for the deep work that she is going to guide you through on your journey. The new art supports the practices that we can all incorporate into our lives starting TODAY! Living a life of New Happy is work...it's hard to break old molds and go against what society tells us. But when you start your journey you will be in on the little secret and you will feel the impact on your life immediately. I'm so excited that Stephanie gifted us with her knowledge, her art, and her passion for New Happy!

Practical Roadmap to Happiness

I have never read a book like this. I knew Old Happy ruled the roost. And I knew it didn’t resonate with me. Everything I want to do for a living – helping people, helping animals, giving back, making the world a better place – seems to pay too little. Those things are not valued over WINNING! I don’t want to be in the rat race. I don’t want to SCHLEP! SCHEME! SELL! I want to help lift people up. This country is in a crazy place right now. Everyone is taught to get their slice of the pie, look out for themselves, and put their own best interests first. But all that advice has been consumed assuming that it must come at the expense of compassion and remembering the responsibility we have to contribute to a better society. The imbalance of power and wealth in America is a stark and screaming red flag. Every page of this book resonated with me. Every idea made me say, “YES!” We have to get back to remembering that we OVERLAP with other people, and that being selfish doesn’t help the greater good. As I wrap up my first career in the next couple of years, this book has entered my life at a critical juncture. It brings the exact roadmap I need to plot out what I will choose to give my energy to. The practical steps and the brilliantly simple artwork in this book make it incredibly easy to shift your thinking from Old Happy, which is really a huge burden, to New Happy, filled with joy and fulfillment. There’s a reason all those “good news stories” make you feel warm and fuzzy; they’re almost universally about someone helping someone or something. THAT’S New Happy. The Beatles had it right; all you really do need is love. I truly believe this book could change the world if enough people read it. Finally, I do resolve to be kinder, to allow my compassion to creep out into the world, to “take the next loving action,” an to take detailed inventory of my humanity, talent, and wisdom gifts and design a way for them to multiply happiness. Thank you, Stephanie, for putting YOUR gifts into this book and into the world!
