Summary of reviews
The recent changes to the Old El Paso seasoning mix and refried beans have left many guests disappointed, citing a significant decline in flavor and texture. While the product was once a staple for quick meals and family favorites, the new versions are often described as bland, runny, or metallic. Guests are now seeking alternatives, hoping for a return to the original recipes that made these products beloved for decades.

Open the can and was surprised how watered down these beans are, especially compared to ones I can find at wholesale stores.

I bought for emergency . But looked like cat food when taken out. I’m Latin so I always bug about 2tbs of oil on pan and caramelize onions and then take them out and add beans. Taste was bland so I added Goya adobo to taste and that made it taste a whole lot better.

Terribly runny, what has happened To my beans that I enjoyed so often in the past? They are similar to a sloppy soupy mess.

After serving to my daughters for taco night she brought a metal shard to me that she bit into when eating some of the beans. Not happy at all considering the metal is sharp and looks like Lead or Aluminum.

Metallic Smell and Taste

I haven't bought Old El Paso Refried Beans (traditional) in awhile. Opened a can last night 1-2-2024 and the beans smelled awful. A very metalliac smell. I thought it was just me but husband could smell it too. I warmed them up and no change in the smell. I did taste the beans but it tasted bad as well, that metal taste. I have another can I bought at the same time, but nervous about eating it. Probably will go in the trash.

Soupy runny beans

I have been buying these for years and opened a can tonight and it was completely runny and watery. I assume they are diluting to increase the profit. First the regular taco shells became super tiny and thin, and then the seasoning started tasting flavorless like filler, and now the beans are ruined. I've been buying Old El Paso products for at least 20 years--What is going on?

Two cans of very runny beans

I bought two cans of traditional refried beans dated 2025. Both of the cans were extremely watery and runny. We were unable to eat them and I can’t take them back for a refund. Is this a problem with the manufacturer or the handling of the product? Please advise. Not a happy customer.

OMG I just bought the big can and my son flew in from NJ and he wanted his favorite nachos baked in the oven with these beans topped with cheese and Jalapeno peppers!! I knew something was wrong because before I made them I thought something is wrong, but we decided to try them anyways. Brought them out of the oven and WE all ate one and couldn't eat anymore and threw it all away. I took a pic of the beans in the can and got the barcode because I thought they were spoiled, but now I see all these reviews and I wished I would have taken the whole can back to the store for a full refund!! Very unhappy to see you've changed your recipe because I've bought these for so long!! BTW too much Cumin and so watery

Like many others I have used OP Refried Beans for years. I must have been luck to keep getting the "old" recipe cans of late. Recently my last two cans were very watery. Needless to say I am dissatisfied and will move to a new brand. Adios Old El Paso!

These refried beans are poor. There is way toooo much cumin, so it ends up tasting like chili for a football party. Added flavoring is not necessary. Very disappointed and will not purchase again. I prefer the LaP brand. Will be donating the other can.
