The bigger canister lid does not fit snug so is not airtight. Inside both canisters are the mango wood which has an odor, I would not store any food product in these canisters, I would be concerned the treated mango wood would leach into the food, plus your food absorbing the food. The white green is a plastic or laminate of some kind, no ceramic. I bought for tea bags, I guess I could store in a ziploc bag but at this price point I'm consiering returning.
