This book left me feeling icky. The three main characters used lying and stealing to get rich. Jane, in particular, loved to make fun of the rich, Southern girls yet did everything she could to be just like them. I was not rooting for any of the main characters by the end. Unnecessary profanity as well, which made the characters appear uneducated and tacky. Two stars are for the writing style—I enjoyed the different points of view and jumping around in time. The twist was interesting but there were so many unbelievable parts. This book is a pass for me.

This book was pitched as a southern Gothic reimagining of Jane Eyre. The author tried but failed miserably. To be precise this book takes place during the third part of Jane Eyre where she becomes a governess but in modern times she's a rebellious dog walker who falls for Eddie Rochester whose wife, Bertha "Bea" Mason, went missing with her best friend, Blanche Ingram. Not to mention Adele is literally a female dog. Even if this book was to be read without knowledge of Jane Eyre, it still fumbles as the romance is switched out for mystery that was poorly written with characters we don't care about and cringy dialogue.

Extremely eh. Compared to other mystery thrillers like this that i have read, this was bottom on the list. Plot twist was so unferwhelming. Also its not a guess as to where the wife is hence the title…. Just not what i expected this book to be. Had a lot of potential but failed :/
Eh, Its okay?

Just “okay”. After reading Verity, I was on the hunt for something similar and was lead here but I was definitely let down. It was an overall okay book but lots of rambling on details that didn’t even add to the story line.
Good read!

I felt this book the author kept building up these secret that I felt fell flat. The whole community is very secretive and for the main character Jane she just didn’t seemed to really care about the secrets as I thought she would. I needed more juicer secrets and I just didn’t get that from this book. I was disappointed.

I’m not one for books, but I decided to try to get into reading. And this book definitely did the trick. I just bought the book last night, and midday the next day, I’m already halfway through! Definitely an attention grabber and a page turner!

This was a predictable but fun read. As an editor, I couldn't help but notice obvious typos throughout. If you do not like profanity, be aware that the characters swear fairly regularly, although not gratuitously. Overall, I was looking for an "easy read" to cleanse my palettes after reading a novel with a significantly heavier plot, and this did the trick!
Couldn’t stop reading it

This was a wild ride, and didn't go where I was expecting it to. I've never read Jane Eyre, so as far as a retelling, I can't say how it was. But as a mystery/thriller with romance vibes, it was good. The changing perspectives were interesting, and the narration on the audio was well done. This follows a trio of terrible people doing terrible things to each other, and I kept changing my mind on who I felt bad for or was worried about. There is Jane, not her real name, who is determined to wife herself to the rich widower in the community where she dog walks, whilst keeping her sordid past a secret, even as it tries to catch up with her. Eddie, the widower, who is keeping his wife captive, when everyone else thinks she and her best-friend died the same night. And Bea, the trapped wife, who through flashbacks we learn wasn’t so honest about her what her past was like, either. Definitely twisty, for fans of Verity, The Family Upstairs, and If We Were Villains this is a family drama with a love triangle, rich socialites, and some past perspectives to fill in the gaps as we go. You never quite know who is the victim and who is the villain, but you can't put it down until you find out.

This is a thriller based on the classic novel Jane Eyre. I haven’t gotten around to reading Jane Eyre yet but if it’s anything like this book then I’m all in. I really enjoyed this one and it kept me guessing the whole time! Hawkins is very talented and this book is a slam dunk for me. I highly recommend it! Will you put this on your list for 2021 reads?
