Description

About the Book

Two brothers among twelve. One pampered. One petulant. After a stunning betrayal, Judah struggles to forget what he's done while Joseph attempts to move on from what's been done to him. Is there hope for reconciliation for one of Egypt's most powerful men and his wayward brother?

Book Synopsis

Two brothers. One betrayal.

The patriarch Jacob has made it no secret that young Joseph is his favorite son. Growing up as the pampered heir to his father's legacy, Joseph thrives under the praise of his father but struggles with the disdain of his older brothers, especially Judah. When a chance comes along to rid themselves of Joseph, his brothers sell him to slave traders and deceive their father about his fate.

Joseph, now serving the captain of Pharaoh's palace guard, is imprisoned after being falsely accused of rape. Back home, Judah leaves his father and builds a new life in Canaan, attempting to flee the memory of his complicity in the betrayal of his younger brother.

Decades later, the brothers will come face-to-face, and this time Joseph has the upper hand. Will forgiveness or vengeance win the day?

"A story of forgiveness, grace, and redemption, and Smith tells it in a creative and believable way, which is a hallmark of her writing."--Booklist

What an amazing biblical fiction story about Jacob and his son Joseph! This story mostly follows Joseph (prince) and Judah his stepbrother (the prodigal). I was saddened by the rift caused between brothers which ultimately was caused because of jealousy between Jacobs two wives Leah and Rachel. I absolutely love reading biblical fiction. It was interesting to read about the different beliefs that the Hebrews, Egyptian and other groups had regarding God‘s, sacrifices and beliefs. This was such a riveting story from beginning to end with engaging characters and storylines. I absolutely loved it!!! highly recommend!! I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

Long-Time Coming Answers to Prayer!

5 out of 5 stars

This is the Old Testament Bible story of Joseph that is fleshed out with details of "what might have been." Much of what the author has written will make you pause and think, "this is how I would have felt" or "of course, that is how it would have been had that particular instance (or event) occurred." Although most of the story comes from Ms. Smith's imagination, it is supported by the Biblical account, and will make that time period in history much more alive to you. Instead of only the narrative of Joseph being the favorite son, the child of the favorite wife, and that all of his brothers hated him except for the youngest, we learn a lot more. This Biblical fiction tries to explain what made a lot of the family members "tick." The dad put Joseph in a very hard place by insisting he spy on his brothers. Poor relationships that already existed among Joseph and his brothers would have plunged with that assignment. Even if Joseph hated doing it, he had to report back to his dad. This-retelling of the event will make the story more personal, and even more unforgettable. It highlights what a momentous thing it was for Joseph to forgive his brothers in the end. Despite this being from the Bible, some of the story-line is only appropriate for mature readers. I highly recommend this five-star book to all history and Biblical story lovers. Revell Publishing has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, The Prince and the Prodigal, for the purpose of review.

I have read quite a few Biblical fiction books lately and find that I really enjoy them. I keep thinking how difficult it would be to write a book of this type. Lots of research to be sure of details would definitely be necessary. I love how the people come to life in this book and how easy it makes it to visualize what is happening as the book progresses. This is an amazing book. I enjoyed it very much and the author truly brings the characters to life, sharing their feelings, both good or not so good ones. I found that as I read this book the characters seemed easier to understand in a very human way. Joseph being the favored son, suffered at the hands of his brothers and it is so good to know that all of this had a purpose with God. It was good to see that he was faithful throughout and we see how God may be silent for a while but his purposes are always seen as in this story of Joseph. I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishing and was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

I have had the pleasure of reading all of Jill Eileen Smith’s to date and was excited to have the opportunity to read her newest release, The Prince and the Prodigal. I was far from being disappointed. This one has become my new favorite of her books. I enjoyed to see her vision of how Joseph lived. The historical details were so vivid, I felt as though I had gone back in time. I thought the whole book was great. I loved it. I am giving The Prince and the Prodigal a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading Biblical fiction. As always, I will be looking for more by Jill Eileen Smith in the future. I received a digital copy of The Prince and the Prodigal from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Fresh look at Joseph and Judah

“But I suppose sometimes hardship is what leads us to seek the things we’ve always known were true.” Jill Eileen Smith always brings the Bible to life and I thoroughly enjoyed this epic thirty somewhat year journey with Joseph. But this book is not just about Joseph; it’s also about Judah - thus the title The Prince and the Prodigal. I had never paid much attention to Judah having left his family after selling Joseph and what transpired afterwards. Judah’s account gave me a fresh perspective on how Judah must have matured through his hardships to become the man who faces Joseph in Egypt with integrity and humility. The book is a little different in that there are many voices narrating the story. Joseph and Judah have the strongest voices, but Jacob, Reuben, Dinah, Tamar and Asenath also tell parts of the story that make the plot much richer. The author has a way of transporting the reader into her book that one can smell and taste the flatbread and stew, touch and hear the goats and sheep grazing, and see the magnificence of the Pharaoh’s holdings. It’s such a familiar story yet made new by the author’s incredible storytelling; it definitely gave me a deeper appreciation for Joseph’s faith, Judah’s renewed commitment to family, and Jacob’s trials and heartaches. I received the book from Baker Publishing Group via Interviews and Reviews and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
