About the Book

"A thrilling psychological horror debut about a woman who is determined to stay in her dream home even after it becomes haunted, no matter the cost... You can survive anything. That's what Margaret tells herself when the walls of her house start to drip blood every September. She's learned how to live with it...and the other terrifying apparitions that have made the sprawling Victorian house she and her husband bought four years ago turn from a dream home into a living nightmare. But she can outlast all of it. Hal felt differently, though. Her husband couldn't take the hauntings anymore, and he left. But now he's not returning calls, and their daughter Katherine arrives, intent on looking for her missing father, convinced something grim has happened to him. With every desperate attempt Katherine makes at finding Hal, the hauntings at the September House grow more harrowing, because there are some secrets the house needs to keep"--

Book Synopsis

"Why run from a haunted house when you can stay and ignore the ghosts? Just when you thought you'd seen everything a haunted house novel could do, The September House comes along and delivers an eerie, darkly funny, and emotionally grounded book about the ghosts that haunt houses and marriages."- Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of How to Sell a Haunted House

A woman is determined to stay in her dream home even after it becomes a haunted nightmare in this compulsively readable, twisty, and layered debut novel.

When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street--for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price--they couldn't believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee.

Margaret is not most people.

Margaret is staying. It's her house. But after four years Hal can't take it anymore, and he leaves abruptly. Now, he's not returning calls, and their daughter Katherine--who knows nothing about the hauntings--arrives, intent on looking for her missing father. To make things worse, September has just begun, and with every attempt Margaret and Katherine make at finding Hal, the hauntings grow more harrowing, because there are some secrets the house needs to keep.

Review Quotes

"Margaret is a delightfully well drawn protagonist, sturdy, unflappable, and often dryly funny, but as the narrative unfurls, we learn that the reasons for her strictly regimented behavior are neither simple nor pleasant...The September House is a surprising, engaging debut."
- Vulture.com (Best Books of 2023)

"A rich and wholly satisfying haunted house novel about dark family secrets and patterns of destruction. It will charm you and terrify you and break your heart, often within the same sentence. An exhilarating debut."

Good Haunted House Story

If you are a fan of the haunted house genre, this is a great read. “The September House” is part psychological thriller and part supernatural - think Stephen King’s “The Shining” mashed with elements from the “Paranormal Activity” film and the BBC’s television series “Ghosts.” Carissa Orlando’s juxtaposition of these two horror genres leaves room for humor, suspense, and a great twist that will leave the reader on their feet.

Scary and original take on haunted house

5 out of 5 stars

Bookish Apple - 2 years ago
The September House is a wholly different take on a haunted house. It perfectly blends elements of dark comedy alongside the horror with a bit of mystery thrown in. Most of the characters have a sort of eccentricity that charm you the more you learn about them. Even with the humor throughout, the horror and gore are a constant. Take care, if you are alone while reading, you will find yourself jumping at any errant sound. Carissa Orlando has written the protagonist, Margaret, as endearing as she is practical. At first, the concessions that Margaret makes to stay in her haunted house feel extraordinary, but once the story fully unfolds, it makes perfect sense. Her story slowly but steadily ramps up until it is impossible to put the book down. All in all, this is an enjoyable scary read that is perfect for spooky season: a must read for anyone who enjoys their horror with a bit of quirkiness thrown in.
