Book Synopsis
A Comprehensive Survey of Human Sexuality from a Christian Perspective
The field of human sexuality is one of ever-increasing complexity, particularly for Christian therapists and psychologists seeking to be faithful to Scripture, informed by science, and sensitive to culture. In Sexuality and Sex Therapy, Mark Yarhouse and Erica Tan offer a survey and appraisal of this field from a Christian perspective, grounding sex therapy in the biblical affirmation of physicality and the redemptive purposes of human life.
This second edition
- Integrates the latest research with a Christian worldview as the authors explore sexual dysfunctions as well as various clinical issues and treatments,
- Updates key research findings in each chapter, and
- Addresses more recent societal trends related to gender identity, non-normative sexualities, digital and social media, and other areas of interest.
Not only have Yarhouse and Tan written a standard resource for Christian therapists and counselors, but they also challenge the church to talk more honestly and openly about the blessing of human sexuality.
Review Quotes
"If you are wanting to become a Christian sex therapist or desire an understanding of sex therapy from a Christian perspective this is an all-encompassing read. When I finished the book, I felt like I had taken a refresher course in sex therapy. Yarhouse and Tan have masterfully conveyed some of the difficult dynamics of approaching such sensitive and complex aspects of sexuality with Christlike compassion. The layout of the book is a helpful guide in challenging the reader to face honestly one's own comfort and struggles around sexuality and to process out ambivalence. Great resource!"
--Deborah Wade, certified sex therapist, licensed marriage and family therapist, and founder of ACTSolutions at The Gathering Place"The essential textbook for Christian therapists is updated and revised to incorporate current research as well as developments in the broader culture. Sexuality and Sex Therapy is a critical read for any active clinician working with Christian clients. While this text began its life as a textbook specifically for sex therapists, it has now become a fundamental tool for all therapists, whether seeing couples, families, adults, or children. While issues of sexuality, gender identity, and sex therapy may have been a specialized niche in the 1990s, it is likely that every therapist will encounter these topics in general therapy. Not just recommended, this book is mandatory for any serious Christian therapist."
--Joshua Matlack, psychologist and outpatient therapist at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services"The second edition of Sexuality and Sex Therapy advances us in responding to the current complexities of sexuality from a firm Christian foundation and scholarly research. Yarhouse and Tan make a strong case that because Christianity holds a high view of sexuality and sexual expression, a Christian worldview provides motivation for the study and practice of sex therapy. They also highlight that being a Christian is not a substitute for professional competence. Their updated work provides us with a much-needed resource with a value-added component that is a tremendous enhancement to what is offered in the field today."
--C. Gary Barnes, professor of counseling at Dallas Theological Seminary and director of the Institute for Sexual Wholeness"This book delivers clarity in a comprehensive manner, the key to a great textbook. The authors again provide both students and practitioners alike a great survey of the topics that affect the sex therapy field and the field itself from a Christian perspective."
--Kimberly Lee, licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapist, and owner of the Center for Sexual and Relational Healing"This resource is indispensable for professionals navigating the complexity between sexuality and faith. This edition integrates up-to-date research with Christian theology, addressing significant topics like non-normative sexualities, gender dysphoria, and societal trends, making it invaluable for clinicians, pastoral caregivers, and scholars. This comprehensive guide equips readers to handle diverse client needs while remaining true to their faith, demonstrating Yarhouse and Tan's commitment to merging scientific understanding and Christian values in sex therapy."
--Danisa Suarez, certified sex therapist with CCI Counseling"With culturally relevant and compassionate consideration of humanity's current social, spiritual, and political state, Yarhouse and Tan bring a fresh perspective and updated research on sexual dysfunctions, disorders, treatment, and other clinical considerations from a fundamental Christian worldview. This text offers a comprehensive understanding of human sexuality and encourages curiosity and dialogue around the theological and scriptural integration of redemption and transformation from sexual brokenness to intimacy with Christ and others."
--Vanessa Snyder, professor at Richmont Graduate University with the Institute for Sexual Wholeness and licensed therapist and certified sex therapist at Resilience Source in Roswell, GA"Yarhouse and Tan offer a groundbreaking and invaluable resource with Sexuality and Sex Therapy. This comprehensive guide uniquely bridges the gap between faith and practice, providing an insightful, in-depth review of sex therapy through a distinctly Christian lens. Whether you're a new therapist seeking a solid foundation or a seasoned clinician exploring the treatment of sexual difficulties, this book is a must-have for anyone looking to enhance their understanding and approach to sexuality and therapy. An essential read for every student and practitioner eager to deepen their expertise."
--Josh Spurlock, founder of MyCounselor.Online and developer of Neuroscience Informed Christian Counseling (NICC)"Yarhouse and Tan's second edition of Sexuality and Sex Therapy is a must-read for clinicians and students alike. Their Christian and theological approach provides a strong foundation and lens for practical application. Each of the sexual disorders are thoroughly introduced with practical insight and tools for practice. This is a foundational text for both counselors and ministers, especially for those that have not received professional training, as they work with these personal and sensitive issues. I highly recommend this book as required reading for students, new counselors, and ministers."
--Corey Gilbert, author of I Can't Say That!: Going Beyond the Talk and I Can't Say That! Parent Workbook, professor of counseling psychology at Corban University, and founder of The HealingLives Center in Salem, Oregon"Yarhouse and Tan's updated edition of Sexuality and Sex Therapy covers all of the key areas necessary to effectively work in the sphere of human sexuality and does so in a faithfully Christian way. This resource is holistic, thoughtful, and expansive in its treatment of so many considerations important to Christian clinicians at a time when the sexuality landscape is increasingly complex. It is an essential text for developing and seasoned clinicians alike and brilliantly attunes to the specific questions of those working and living at the intersection of faith and human sexuality."
