loved this unit...easy to setup and sound was great...then after 4 months all of a sudden now it shuts itself seeing the words protect ...wait a bit and turn it on and after awhile it shuts off again....I looked up what causes this and check everything...nothing...it still shuts off now every once in awhile, this is getting very frustrating ....looking at reviews i see this is a problem....I wish I wouldve checked more reviews, but being sony and knowing thier reputation of great products I wasnt worried...well guess every once in awhile even a company like sony can make a lemon....no idea what to do...

Recently bought this to replace my still functioning Yamaha receiver. The Yamaha was not compatible with Dolby Vision or HDR which my new TV has and decided to upgrade. I have it paired with Klipsch speakers and sub. I am heading sounds I never knew were there the audio decoding is great. To get the best picture quality you must go into the Amp menu and select the HDMI input of choice and then choose Signal Format and change to Enhanced. This will enable HDR and Dolby Vision otherwise your TV won't register the function.

I bought this a month ago and still cannot get it the the speakers to play and correctly and has a terrible delay between the stopped and forward features of the TV. I hired the "Geek Squad" to come set it up and they are not inexpensive.

I bought this to replace my old Sony STR-DE1075 which still worked great but had no HDMI input capability. I wanted Dolby Atmos and the STR-DH790 provides this. I am using it with a Roku Ultra and there are many Dolby Atmos videos on Youtube but none will really blow you away like I was hoping. I have yet to use it for a Dolby surround sound movie but look forward to hearing the full effects once I do. I know that the STR-DH790 is providing the full surround sound so I just need to find a good video to really try it out.

This is a great home theater amplifier that people on a budget will enjoy. Very easy to setup and the fine tuning microphone is a good help. Only thing I think is missing is more bananas plug inputs. The sound is awesome.

All around it's a solid receiver, just lacking in the feature department. Menus could be better and more options. Sony cheaped out and only allowed for banana plug ports for the left and right channels, center and surrounds are bare wire terminals. Having some issues with passthrough with Xbox Series X as well, having to bypass the AVR and go through the tv for full functionality. This could very well be user error, but I can't find the correct setting... it shouldn't be difficult. I do really like the Bluetooth connection, love being able to stream from my phone. What sold me was the eARC and it pairs well with my Bravia OLED with the shared remote function.

If you continuously use this receiver at a large volume, the cabinet temperature of the top, side and bottom rises considerably. Sound is just Ok, my Harmon Karden sounds much better. The remote has been glitchy, sometimes not wanting to work and the receiver randomly turns on and the shuts off.
