About the Book

When Stella's friend Owen loses a tooth at the museum, Stella and Roger believe that someone stole it and search high and low to find it.

Book Synopsis

In this effervescent companion to the picture book Stella Keeps the Sun Up, Stella goes on the hunt to figure out who's behind her friend's missing tooth.

Stella, her bestie Roger, and her second-best friend Owen are excited to go see Sue the T-rex at the museum, but when Owen has to leave early because he lost a tooth, Stella becomes determined to find it for him. How did he manage to lose a tooth? Was it stolen? Could the tooth fairy be responsible? Could Owen be...a dinosaur boy?

Nothing will keep Stella from her investigation, even if she and Roger fear their own teeth could be stolen too. But the more Stella investigates, the more she realizes that perhaps this case is not as complicated as she thought.

About the Author

Clothilde Ewing started her work life as a lifeguard, but she has spent most of her career telling people's stories as a journalist (CBS News), television producer (The Oprah Winfrey Show), and communications professional. She loves using the written word to honor a child's imagination and is on a mission to help adults tap into the wonder they felt as children. She was inspired to start writing after reading a New York Times opinion piece by her now-editor, Denene Millner, titled: "Black Kids Don't Want to Read About Harriet Tubman All the Time." Her goal is for people to see more children of color in books that are not defined primarily by race or struggle but rather by belonging and joy. A native of Cleveland, she lives in Chicago with her husband and two highly energetic children.

Lynn Gaines has been making art for years and is still in love it! Born and raised in Ohio, she currently works for American Greetings but also enjoys making art for children's books and kids-related products. She works both digitally and traditionally, often combining the two. She hasn't met a craft she doesn't love--sewing is one of her favorite hobbies. She looks for inspiration everywhere and often finds it in bookstores and thrift stores, looking in vintage children's books and animation, and even in a garden or two. In her spare time, she is a bit of an illustration nerd and loves to roller skate, read, and toy with writing. Lynn lives in Northeast Ohio with her husband, Mel, and two fur-kids and studio mates, Charlie and Harry.

Finally, a beautifully written story about a young black girl living her joyful, imaginative life. As someone who has struggled to find childrens books for my daughter that portrayed young black children beyond the roles of those struggling through social justice challenges. Clothilde Ewing has brought the black kid joy that's been largely missing from children's literature. That said, what makes this book so wonderful is that it is a story that ALL children can enjoy!

Our family absolutely loves the second book in the Stella series! The story is cute, and perfect for kiddos in this age group who are (or soon will be!) losing teeth. And, the illustrations are just great (make sure your kids keep an eye out for the hidden tooth fairy in the story!) Love, love, love!

My kiddos (age 4 and 6) are in love with Stella. I kinda am, too -- she's smart, spunky and thoughtful. We loved the first book (Stella Keeps The Sun Up), which had the bonus of answering the whole "why does the sun set and where does it go??" question in a really fun way. Stella and the Missing Tooth doesn't disappoint -- it's another sweet story of adventure and friendship, and this time makes the whole "losing a tooth" a bit less scary. Plus, dinos (IYKYK). As a mom that tries to find books that have diverse characters, this one is a homerun -- a joyful black girl going on adventures and living her best life...just as it should be.
