The Counselors is set at an elite, idyllic summer camp in small town Vermont called Alpine Lake. Goldie, Ava and Imogen met at Alpine Lake for the first time when they were 8 years old. They swore to be 'sisters by choice' and their friendship has endured. Ava's father is a powerful financier. Imogen is also wealthy and wants to become an actress. Goldie is a townie but is able to go to camp because her parents are employees there. The girls are camp counselors. Each girl comes to camp with secrets she hasn't revealed to other two. Goldie's secret is particularly devastating, and she has had an awful year. Then Goldie's ex-boyfriend, Heller, is found dead on camp property, his death determined to be an accident. As Goldie starts to question the circumstances of his death, she realizes that Alpine Lake has its own dark secrets. The Counselors is told through dual timelines, which really builds the tension. The novel's strengths are the atmospheric summer camp setting, so perfectly portrayed, the complex and strong friendship between the three girls, and the examination of class and privilege. The enormous wealth of the campers starkly contrasts with the residents of the struggling small town. This gripping, well-paced thriller is an entertaining and insightful summer read.

Goldie Easton only feels safe at Camp Alpine Lake. Even when she was too young to attend, she has always had a special connection to the place. The camp is the lifeline of the small town of Roxwood, where Goldie lives. It provides jobs, money and prestige to the town. However, very few Roxwood locals get to experience the rewards of living so close to the summer camp - with it's five-figure tuition and the crowds of rich kids whose parents have dumped them at camp for eight weeks. Goldie is one of those locals. Even though Goldie is a "townie", she has never felt more at home at Alpine Lake and this summer she is back as a counselor. She is desperate for the summer to start and for her best friends, Imogen and Ava, to arrive at camp because she needs the comfort more than ever now that she is keeping a dark secret. When a teen is found dead in the lake one night, it is discovered that Goldie isn't the only one keeping secrets. The death looks like an accident but Goldie knows that that's not the case. She also knows that Ava was at the lake the same night as the incident. Did Ava see anything? What does she know? Why hasn't she mentioned anything to Goldie? Did Ava have something to do with the death? However, asking those questions only leads to broken lifelong friendships and surfacing hidden dangers and betrayals. I enjoyed reading The Counselors. The suspense was well done and kept me interested the whole time.
