Book Synopsis

**THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**

"Alex Michaelides hits the trifecta with his third novel, The Fury. The highly original story presents the reader with the king of all unreliable narrators, enough twists and turns to power two novels, and a host of characters that bleed right on the page. " --David Baldacci

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex-movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder -- from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that's not quite true. At its heart, it's a love story, isn't it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind...and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I'm going to tell you a story unlike any you've ever heard.

Review Quotes

"Gloriously atmospheric and utterly riveting, this is my favourite Alex Michaelides yet. Readers you are in for a treat! But then what else would you expect from the undisputed master of the twist?"
--Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Apartment and The Guest List

"Alex Michaelides hits the trifecta with his third novel, The Fury. The highly original story presents the reader with the king of all unreliable narrators, enough twists and turns to power two novels, and a host of characters that bleed right on the page. For fans of erudite, locked room mysteries told with style and theatrical panache, The Fury delivers, on all counts." --David Baldacci

"A classic, twisting, brilliant murder mystery. A wonderfully drawn cast of characters with a motive to kill for, in a location to die for, keep you guessing until the shocking finale. Clever, and fiendishly fun." --Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End

"The Fury, like its beguiling narrator, is endlessly evolving, wildly entertaining, and like the very best fiction, impossible to pin down. Just when you think you have it cornered, it moves, impossibly and with stunning flourish, toward a devastating finale. The Talented Mr. Ripley for our time."
--Blake Crouch, New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter

"Audacious, twisty, compelling, and full of the joyous verve that one only finds in the very best storytelling, this is the best novel yet from Alex Michaelides." --Sophie Hannah

"You'll think you know where it's going and you couldn't be more wrong." --Linwood Barclay

"A very sophisticated book which takes the format of a classic murder mystery and elevates it to something very devious and clever indeed. The narrator is fabulous -- I was thoroughly gripped by his voice and it seems to have been written with great glee. There's such a tremendous complicity to it even though the reader has no idea how much of what he's telling is true, even down to the final pages. The way it reveals itself through the layers of the narrative is very well done indeed." --Harriet Tyce, author of Blood Orange

"Alex Michaelides is the grand master of the modern mystery. The Fury reads like Hitchcock with a heart, or Agatha Christie running amok on a wind-whipped Greek island. A tale of old friends and buried emotions ready to explode, all set on an idyllic island rendered so perfectly you can smell the jasmine, the ouzo and the Aegean Sea. The Fury will, quite literally, blow you away. Totally brilliant." --Tony Parsons, author of Who She Was

"The Fury by Alex Michaelides is a proper, grown-up thriller that exudes class from every page. So much more than a murder mystery, every twist and turn is simultaneously a total surprise and completely inevitable. The writing is perfectly sparse, yet cloaks a narrative of rare complexity. So many contradictions, yet all unite in a devastating whole. The Fury is a very special book and highly recommended." --Janice Hallett, author of international bestseller The Appeal

"Glamorous, sinister, and endlessly surprising, The Fury reads like Agatha Christie and Patricia Highsmith took a Greek vacation together and decided to write a book while there. It's twisty, twisted entertainment."
--Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of The Only One Left

"A glorious triumph--just brilliant."
--Stephen Fry

"This is a masterclass in suspense. A unique and captivating narrator takes you on a journey filled with twists and finely drawn characters you will treasure. This is probably his best book. Not to be missed."
--Steve Cavanagh, author of Thirteen and Kill for Me, Kill for You

"One of those rare books where really nothing is as it seems. As usual, Alex Michaelides does not disappoint."
--Ragnar Jonasson

"The Fury is a masterfully woven story of Shakespearean twists and Machiavellian turns. A Greek Tragedy in the guise of a postmodern thriller. Do not miss this one."
--Holly Jackson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

"Mesmerising--a beguiling labyrinth of twists and surprises, even better than The Silent Patient. The Fury is The Magus meets The Secret History on a Greek island paradise where nothing is as it seems, and Alex Michaelides is a master magician, skilfully misdirecting the reader at every turn." --JP Delaney

"Shades of Agatha Christie and Sunset Boulevard color this outstanding psychological thriller ...Michaelides keeps readers on deliciously unsteady ground throughout, ratcheting up the tension until he arrives at the final series of reveals. The result is a character-driven, atmospheric delight."
--Publishers Weekly

"From the author of The Silent Patient comes another perfectly-paced thriller that will have you looking at your friends with a hint of suspicion... It unfolds so satisfyingly well, you just might want to block off a weekend to read it all in one."
--Good Housekeeping 12 Most Anticipated Books of 2024

"Michaelides again creates an almost tangible blend of tension, manipulation, and obsession. Even readers will fall prey to Michaelides' craft, nudged into shifting, sympathetic allegiances to the damaged, unlikable characters in this pitch-perfect, classic crime set-up and modern psychological thriller." --Booklist

"Alex Michaelides is a master...Intriguing and page-turning, The Fury is Michaelides at his best, which is saying a lot after the success of The Silent Patient."
--GMA.com 15 New Books to Read for the New Year

"A dazzling whodunit, much like his bestselling novels The Silent Patient and The Maidens. But The Fury sets itself apart by adding [a] dose of Old Hollywood glamour and intrigue...like the love child between Sunset Boulevard's Billy Wilder and Agatha Christie."
--Bustle

"Michaelides wrote the huge best-seller The Silent Patient, so he's got a few tricks up his sleeve with this new novel...Elliot Chase, our unreliable narrator, owes a bit to Tom Ripley; he might also remind readers of Barry Keoghan's character in Saltburn."
--Vulture

"Michaelides's deliciously twisty and fiendishly clever third novel takes the classic locked-room mystery and delivers a fresh spin on the genre... What sets the book apart is its innovative structure and the compelling voice of its narrator, Elliot Chase; wonderfully sinister and beautifully unreliable, he guides us - with sleights of hand aplenty - through this impressive and highly enjoyable tale of subterfuge, secrets and murder."
--The Guardian

"Alex Michaelides delivers a terrific spin on the Agatha Christie classic, And Then There Were None, with a dash of the film Glass Onion in his latest thriller...Readers who have enjoyed Michaelides' previous books will find this one his best yet..."
--Criminal Element, Best Psychological Thrillers in January

"The Fury is well-plotted -- a murder mystery in the style of Knives Out with the sensibilities of Hamlet ("the play's the thing!") and Rebecca woven-in to great effect. There's adultery, drugs and a mysterious groundskeeper. What's not to like!?"
--Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"Alex Michaelides is a master of the unreliable narrator... The Fury is pure Agatha Christie-esque fun."
--The Boston Globe

A clever, engaging and atmospheric thriller

The Fury is a slow burn murder mystery thriller with an isolated, atmospheric setting. Lana Farrar is a famous retired movie star. She has invited all of her close friends to spend Easter with her on her private Greek Island. Elliot Chase is the narrator of the unfolding events and reveals the background of all the characters and how they come to be on the island. He is the ultimate unreliable narrator and has a confiding, conversational manner. There are seven people on the island when a murder occurs leaving six suspects. A raging windstorm "The Fury" is occurring leaving no possibility of outside help. The characters are complex and interesting, and the narrative is well written and skillfully constructed. The story is slow to start but ramps up by the second half. The reader is swept up in the unravelling twists and turns. The book is structured like a play in the style of a Greek tragedy. The Fury is a clever and engaging thriller.

very cool book

I really liked this one. I've read Michaelides's other books, and I was a big fan in particular of The Silent Patient (don't read this one until you've read that one, by the way--there are spoilers for both the other books), so I was excited to see what this book would be like. It was not a disappointment--the characters were very well developed (if not very sympathetic), and the plot was good--I really liked the creative narrative device used for telling the story. It made the story a quick read, I got through the whole book at once! However, it was very different from The Silent Patient, and from what I've been seeing in other reviews, I think that could be why some people are not loving it. The ending was awesome, in my opinion. I didn't find the book overall to be slow, as some did, but I will say that the ending was easily the best part of the book. I love a book that ends in a memorable way. I think everyone should give this book a chance!

I'm not someone who reads books more than once, but I read this book in one sitting and then I went back and read it again because it was just such a wild ride and so much fun. I definitely got a lot more out of reading it the second time, too. Masterfully twisty!

As a huge fan of The Silent Patient and Rian Johnson's Glass Onion, I was thrilled to find that Alex Michaelides's newest thriller is such a great merge of the both!! This book was a BREEZE to read and has all the great twists and turns that I wanted. Huge recommend to all thriller fans out there.

A twisty tale

Denice D, Reviewer Last updated on 07 Jan 2024 This is a story of love, secrets, and a murder. Elliott, the narrator, tells the story. But can the reader trust Elliot? Is he a reliable narrator? Or is he only telling the version of the story he wants the reader to know? The story is about movie star Lana Farrar, whom Elliot becomes close to. Elliott shares the events that happened involving lies, love, and, ultimately, a murder. As the reader follows the story, it unfolds, revealing so many twists and turns your head will spin. The story unfolds quickly, but the reader only has Elliot’s version. As a reader, I began questioning whether Elliot was telling what occurred or whether it was one of his scripts. T

The most brilliant murder mystery you'll read this year

The Fury is the most brilliant murder mystery you’ll read this year. So many elements come together for a masterful, layered whodunnit – an unreliable narrator, glamorous locale on a private island in Greece, the London theatre + Hollywood movie scene, and then all the twists and turns the story takes. There was one particularly heart-wrenching chapter about the narrator's childhood that completely gutted me emotionally. It added so much gravitas to the story and gave insight into why certain events fell into place (no spoilers!). In fact, I was still thinking about the book a week after I finished it, so I started reading it again! Bravo, Alex Michaelides!

The perfect read for the snowy weekend we are having. Finished this in two sittings. Michaelides is the master at character development and twists and this one did not disappoint. A slow build then turns on the gas and you will not figure out this whydunnit. Don't compare this to his other two novels as it stands alone and is quite unique in the way it unfolds. It is told in five acts by Elliott, the playwright. A character you both love and hate. He's complicated and oh so fun. Sarcastic and witty. Enjoy!

overall underwhelmed

An ex-movie star spends Easter with her closest friends on her private island in Greece. The night ends in murder. THE FURY is the first book I’ve read by Alex Michaelides. I was intrigued by the premise, however after reading I was left feeling overall a bit underwhelmed. The narrator promises to tell an epic story of which he continues to hype throughout the book. I found this to be grating after a while rather than keeping things suspenseful. The pacing felt very slow which caused me to struggle with holding attention through much of the book until things picked up toward the end. Though the writing style wasn’t a great fit for me, I’d encourage anyone who finds the synopsis interesting to give THE FURY a try as it may be enjoyed more by others. I’m still interested in checking out the author’s other works. Thank you to Celadon Books for the gifted ARC.
