Book Synopsis

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex-movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder -- from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that's not quite true. At its heart, it's a love story, isn't it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind...and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I'm going to tell you a story unlike any you've ever heard.

The Fury is a slow burn murder mystery thriller with an isolated, atmospheric setting. Lana Farrar is a famous retired movie star. She has invited all of her close friends to spend Easter with her on her private Greek Island. Elliot Chase is the narrator of the unfolding events and reveals the background of all the characters and how they come to be on the island. He is the ultimate unreliable narrator and has a confiding, conversational manner. There are seven people on the island when a murder occurs leaving six suspects. A raging windstorm "The Fury" is occurring leaving no possibility of outside help. The characters are complex and interesting, and the narrative is well written and skillfully constructed. The story is slow to start but ramps up by the second half. The reader is swept up in the unravelling twists and turns. The book is structured like a play in the style of a Greek tragedy. The Fury is a clever and engaging thriller.

very cool book

I really liked this one. I've read Michaelides's other books, and I was a big fan in particular of The Silent Patient (don't read this one until you've read that one, by the way--there are spoilers for both the other books), so I was excited to see what this book would be like. It was not a disappointment--the characters were very well developed (if not very sympathetic), and the plot was good--I really liked the creative narrative device used for telling the story. It made the story a quick read, I got through the whole book at once! However, it was very different from The Silent Patient, and from what I've been seeing in other reviews, I think that could be why some people are not loving it. The ending was awesome, in my opinion. I didn't find the book overall to be slow, as some did, but I will say that the ending was easily the best part of the book. I love a book that ends in a memorable way. I think everyone should give this book a chance!

I'm not someone who reads books more than once, but I read this book in one sitting and then I went back and read it again because it was just such a wild ride and so much fun. I definitely got a lot more out of reading it the second time, too. Masterfully twisty!

As a huge fan of The Silent Patient and Rian Johnson's Glass Onion, I was thrilled to find that Alex Michaelides's newest thriller is such a great merge of the both!! This book was a BREEZE to read and has all the great twists and turns that I wanted. Huge recommend to all thriller fans out there.

A twisty tale

Denice D, Reviewer Last updated on 07 Jan 2024 This is a story of love, secrets, and a murder. Elliott, the narrator, tells the story. But can the reader trust Elliot? Is he a reliable narrator? Or is he only telling the version of the story he wants the reader to know? The story is about movie star Lana Farrar, whom Elliot becomes close to. Elliott shares the events that happened involving lies, love, and, ultimately, a murder. As the reader follows the story, it unfolds, revealing so many twists and turns your head will spin. The story unfolds quickly, but the reader only has Elliot’s version. As a reader, I began questioning whether Elliot was telling what occurred or whether it was one of his scripts. T

The most brilliant murder mystery you'll read this year

The Fury is the most brilliant murder mystery you’ll read this year. So many elements come together for a masterful, layered whodunnit – an unreliable narrator, glamorous locale on a private island in Greece, the London theatre + Hollywood movie scene, and then all the twists and turns the story takes. There was one particularly heart-wrenching chapter about the narrator's childhood that completely gutted me emotionally. It added so much gravitas to the story and gave insight into why certain events fell into place (no spoilers!). In fact, I was still thinking about the book a week after I finished it, so I started reading it again! Bravo, Alex Michaelides!

The perfect read for the snowy weekend we are having. Finished this in two sittings. Michaelides is the master at character development and twists and this one did not disappoint. A slow build then turns on the gas and you will not figure out this whydunnit. Don't compare this to his other two novels as it stands alone and is quite unique in the way it unfolds. It is told in five acts by Elliott, the playwright. A character you both love and hate. He's complicated and oh so fun. Sarcastic and witty. Enjoy!

overall underwhelmed

An ex-movie star spends Easter with her closest friends on her private island in Greece. The night ends in murder. THE FURY is the first book I’ve read by Alex Michaelides. I was intrigued by the premise, however after reading I was left feeling overall a bit underwhelmed. The narrator promises to tell an epic story of which he continues to hype throughout the book. I found this to be grating after a while rather than keeping things suspenseful. The pacing felt very slow which caused me to struggle with holding attention through much of the book until things picked up toward the end. Though the writing style wasn’t a great fit for me, I’d encourage anyone who finds the synopsis interesting to give THE FURY a try as it may be enjoyed more by others. I’m still interested in checking out the author’s other works. Thank you to Celadon Books for the gifted ARC.
