NATIONAL BESTSELLER - A January 2024 Indie Next Pick and LibraryReads Pick
"The reigning queen of the Gothic thriller." --Entertainment Weekly THERE'S NOTHING AS GOOD AS THE RICH GONE BAD. When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she's not only North Carolina's richest woman, she's also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family's estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But in the aftermath of her death, her adopted son, Camden, wants little to do with the house or the money--and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past. Ten years later, his uncle's death pulls Cam and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but the legacy of Ruby is inescapable. And as Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what's written in a will--and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.Review Quotes
"A twisty, twisted tale." --AARP
"Hawkins does an excellent job keeping readers off-balance throughout. Nonstop twists and surprises make this a true thrill ride...a delicious tale of murder, greed, and the ties that bind." --Publishers Weekly "Rachel Hawkins delivers another read-in-a-sitting knockout. The Heiress has it all--murder, secrets, Gothic vibes, and one of the most deliciously twisted families ever put to page. I loved it!" --Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of The Only One Left "Featuring unreliable narrators and twists throughout, Hawkins' latest continues her reign as the queen of slow-burn domestic thrillers. This is a page-turner that readers will find hard to put down and is perfect for fans of stories with ambiguous morals and dysfunctional families." --Booklist PRAISE FOR THE VILLA: "Flashing between past and present, Hawkins weaves an engrossing tale about betrayal, sisterhood, and the power of telling your own story. Captivating!" --People "Hawkins brilliantly stitches together past and present, deftly luring readers into a deliciously dark tale. Everything about The Villa is pitch-perfect, again proving that Hawkins is the reigning queen of suspense." --Heather Gudenkauf, New York Times bestselling author of The Overnight Guest "The Villa teems with sexual tension, festering tempers, and questionable friendships. Hawkins' latest thriller reminds us that writers cannot always be trusted--and certainly not the tales they tell." --Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The London Séance SocietyAbout the Author

With your heart in your throat, this is a story that kept on giving, right to the end. There are mysteries, and yes, they unfold, and most you won't see coming! Talk about double lives, and getting away with murder, and you won't want to be in the same house with most of these characters! Being born with the silver spoon, or adopted into it, and then the rest of the family! A missing child, a found child, but the right one? A new marriage, a dead husband, then a new marriage, an angry sister, and her family, but does money buy happiness? Didn't seem to me that it did, but you will have to judge for yourself. Warning this is a page turner, and it will keep you up late, you will be looking for answers! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher St. Martin's Press, and was not required to give a positive review.

Ruby McTavish was rich and infamous, and now she’s dead. Known best for 1- being kidnapped and then returned as a small child and 2- having been married four times to husbands who all passed unexpectedly, Ruby is the owner of the sprawling Ashby House. When she passes away, her entire estate is left to her son, Cameron- much to the disgust of the rest of the McTavish family. Cam was adopted by Ruby when he was a child, and in the eyes of this uppity family, not a worthy heir to her fortune. After years away from the mansion he grew up in, Cam returns to Ashby House with his wife Jules to settle things once and for all. But once there, this gothic mystery spirals into a vortex of family secrets where it seems that everyone has something to hide. Ruby as a character truly embraced the dichotomy between villain and misunderstood do-gooder. She gave me Evelyn Hugo vibes- an elderly rich woman sharing the secrets of her past. My personal view of her changed so many times during the book depending on what letter of hers I was reading. Throughout the book, I found that the letters from Ruby get harder and harder to read. The secrets that she shared are heartbreaking and painful. And in the letters, I quickly noticed that they were not addressed to anyone specific, leaving me guessing who the recipient was throughout the majority of the book. With short but satisfying chapters, I could have easily finished this book in one afternoon if I had the time to. I was hooked on finishing a chapter and seeing what the next would bring. The chapters switch between multiple points of view and include mixed media with inclusion of news articles, emails, and letters. This is one of my favorite ways for a book to be written, and Hawkins used the mixed media approach without flaw. As much as I needed to know what happened, I really didn’t want this book to end- I was enjoying it that much!

I loved the quote “Without a Trace,” by Bill Naracott, Outside, May 2017 included at the beginning! It really sets the tone for the book! How many go missing on the Appalachian trail that are never accounted for or are found? Have they died from a fall or succumbed at the hands of an animal looking for a meal? Just chilling! This book begins with Ruby Ann, a 3-year-old, from the wealthiest family in NC, going missing while on a family picnic! She was kidnapped, but reunited with her family after 8 months! This is just the start of life’s tribulations for Ruby. She had four husbands, but all died for various reasons, giving her the nickname “Mrs. kill-more”, although she was never charged with their deaths. When she dies at 73 as an Heiress, her adopted son, Camden, inherits her wealth and house, which is thought to be 8 figures. This causes an uproar with the rest of the family due to Camden’s lack of contact with the family for the past 10 years because of complicated family dynamics. Will it further drive them apart, or will it help fix the rift between them? As the story unfolds, this book will have you shaking your head at times! This book definitely has an ending I didn’t see coming! I loved how each chapter was narrated by a different character : Camden, Ruby’s letters, and Jules. This kept the pages turning! Also, I loved all the twists and turns! Made for an entertaining read! A great book to add to your TBR list if you love a great mystery/thriller!
