Book Synopsis

**THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**

Alex Michaelides's long-awaited next novel, 'The Maidens, ' is finally here...the premise is enticing and the elements irresistible.
--The New York Times

A deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive read--with a twist that blew my mind. I loved this even more than I loved The Silent Patient and that's saying something!
--Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements "Michaelides as a major player in the field" (Publishers Weekly).

Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike--particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.

Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana's niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge.

Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld?

When another body is found, Mariana's obsession with proving Fosca's guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything--including her own life.

--Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End

The author of the critically acclaimed The Silent Patient permanently cements himself as a top modern author with this new work, a masterful, slow burn blend of Greek mythology and a knife-edged plot...destined for the bestseller list.
--Newsweek

Michaelides' stage-setting skills are as masterful here, as they were in The Silent Patient (2019); another tense, cleverly twisted winner.

"Michaelides melds mythology and crime into a compelling page-turner."
--Oprah Daily

Michaelides has proven that he is no one-hit wonder and is well on his way to becoming one of the world's most influential and well-read thriller writers.
--Bookreporter.com

Stunning... The intelligent, cerebral plot finds contemporary parallels in Euripides's tragedies, Jacobean dramas such as The Duchess of Malfi, and Tennyson's poetry. The devastating ending shows just how little the troubled Mariana knows about the human psyche or herself. Michaelides is on a roll.

Tautly plotted and impeccably paced, it's an intelligent and propulsive second novel.

Enticingly dark and compulsively pageturning, this chilling novel takes readers on a suspenseful journey that's both terrifying and twisted... Having read and loved The Silent Patient I knew that I had to read this one. While it did start off a little slow that did not last long. I was pulled in and had a hard time putting it down. Great writing and great characters. I love that Alex mentioned two of the characters from his previous book and no you do not need to read that book before you read this one. Being Greek I loved all the mentions of Greek Mythology.. There is lots of suspense with a ending that I did not expect.

After reading and loving The Silent Patient, I had to read Alex Michaelides’ newest book. This book starts off a bit slow, but when it picks up, it picks up hard and fast! I was so eager to figure out this murder mystery, I found myself frantically turning page after page late into many nights. I also loved how much Greek mythology was in this book. It was really interesting how the author tied this in so seamlessly and well. I can’t wait to see what this talented author comes up with next.

Writing is gripping, story is meh

This was a book club read. It's a who-done-it that focuses on a grieving widow and therapist who travels to her niece's college to solve a murder mystery. The writing is very gripping and page-turning, but there are so many red herrings given that the actual culprit's plan or motivation is not well-explained. I felt very unsatisfied at the end -- it wasn't a bad premise, but again, it was just not fleshed out enough to make sense. There is a theme of greek mythology woven throughout, and I found that connection very satisfying in the ending. It's the most well-written and planned aspect of the book. You do have to have a suspension of belief to enjoy a lot of the plot. There is literally no way that the main character could snoop around crime scenes and mess with evidence the way she does, and the reasoning behind why she's allowed to tamper with the investigation the way she does is shoddy at best. Especially when she has family involved. Overall, it's gripping and a quick read for the beach or on a lazy Sunday.

I enjoyed the last 5 pages...

I recently read "The Silent Patient" which was absolutely astounding. I had to find more from this author because I enjoyed the unexpected twists and writing style. Tragically, Page after page of the reading this book "The Maidens" was absolutely exhausting as chapter after chapter the story did not get closer to answering "who done it", didn't cause the reader to form any emotional string to the characters, and was not worth the journey the last five pages of the book which really caught my attention.

Really Good

Mariana is absolutely sure that Edward Fosca, a Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, is a murderer. Fosca is adored by staff and students - particularly a group of female students that form a society and are called The Maidens. When Mariana's niece's friend, who is a member of The Maidens, is found murdered, Mariana - a brilliant but troubled group therapist - becomes obsessed with the secret society. Mariana, who once attended the same university, believes that beneath all of the charm there lies something a lot more sinister and she is determined to find out the truth. Mariana's obsession with Edward Fosca spirals out of control when a second body is found and she still can't prove Fosca's guilt. She's willing to put her own life in danger to prove what she believes is the truth. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed it but not as much as Alex Michaelides's other book, The Silent Patient.
