1925 Lauren is a Doctor of Egyptology at the Metropolitan Museum. She always wanted her father's approval, and to be like him, but he stayed distant throughout her life, mostly in Egypt. Joe is a detective and comes to her for help with some forgeries. Quite a mystery unfolds, full of deception, crime, danger and suspense, leaving you unsure of suspects till the end. Three-D characters, realistically draw you in. You have to feel for them as they struggle through the mystery and their relationship, learning to trust. Excellent read. I received this book free from the author, publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. #NetGalley #MetropolitanAffair #JocelynGreen #BooksYouCanFeelGoodAbout #BethanyHouse

A Riveting Story!

The Metropolitan Affair is a riveting start to Jocelyn Green's newest series, On Central Park. Dead people were easy to talk to. It was the living ones that often gave Lauren trouble. Even her father. Sigh. I did not want that opening line to resonate, but unfortunately, it did. Lauren has issues with her dad, and they are justified. I have issues with mine and they are justified as well. At this point in the story, all I can say, is at least her dad was trying to connect with her. At times it seems like he is using her, and only time will tell if that stays true, but at least he is reaching out. Lauren's old friend, Joe, reconnects with her in the hopes that she can help him find victims of art fraud. Being the top in her male-dominated field, Lauren is the perfect pick for Joe. It is interesting to see how their past unfolds bit by bit in the story. The author does a great job of balancing details and dialogue. As someone who tends to be more character-driven and less detail oriented, I appreciate that The Metropolitan Affair has a nice balance. I enjoyed learning more about Egyptian history and the process forgers would go through to create forgeries. The mystery keeps the story moving and the reader guessing. Thank you to Justreads Publicity and Jocelyn Green for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

ntriguing, romantic, and mysterious, this historical fiction is without a doubt a 5 star read for me! 1920s New York City. Detective Joe Caravello, a man on the hunt for forgeries of Egyptian antiquities. Dr. Lauren Westlake, assistant curator of Egyptian art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art…and the woman Joe fell in love with years ago. Together, Joe and Lauren must solve the clues that lead to a ring of forgers. But all is not what it seems…and lies, betrayal and secrets threaten not only their second chance at love but also their lives. There were so many layers to this story and they were all perfectly weaved together. I loved the focus on relationships, both the sweet romance between Joe and Lauren but also the complex relationships they have with their parents. The historical details were presented in a way that did not make it seem I was sitting in a classroom and it was obvious the author has done her research. Danger. Suspense. Mystery. Romance. History. The Metropolitan Affair has it all and I could NOT put it down. Absolutely loved it and this is a must-read for any fan of historical fiction. I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

Sweet, Second-Chance Romance in 1920s New York

𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲。 𝗛𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲。 During the roaring twenties of New York City, Dr. Lauren Westlake and Detective Joe Caravello are the protagonists of a heartwarming, second-chance romance that takes an unexpected turn as they become embroiled in a quest to uncover a ring of forgers. Doesn’t even matter that I have little interest in Egyptian art — I really liked this story and learned so much! Loved that the main characters were a little older and more mature. I’m always drawn to Jocelyn’s multi-layered characters and their complex relationships outside of the love interest. In this book, Lauren deals with a strained relationship with her father which affects every aspect of her life. Beautiful true love theme woven throughout. I mean, these are the kinds of lines that make me swoon: “He could have stolen kisses or persuaded her to defy her father, but he didn’t. That’s because he loved her, not because he didn’t.” If you like Christian historical fiction, don’t miss this one! I received an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

Great Gilded Age Mystery

Set in New York City in the mid-1920s, The Metropolitan Affair is a wonderful Gilded Age mystery complete with the rich and famous, lavish parties, forgers of antiquities, a beautiful Egyptologist, and a German-Italian NYPD detective. The story is original, well-plotted, and contains natural sounding dialogue. The author paints vivid mental images including those that impact the olfactory and taste senses, leaving the reader's mouth watering for pastrami on rye or the best cup of coffee with a cannoli on the side. The theme is about discovering the One that, unlike friends and family may do, will never leave nor forsake you, and whose love is never conditional. I most highly recommend The Metropolitan Affair, the first book in Green's On Central Park series, and her previous series, The Windy City Saga. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

All That Glitters…..

Lauren has an unusual profession for a woman in the 1920's because she works as an assistant curator at a famous museum. All her life, her father used his work on Egyptian archeological digs as an excuse to keep away from her mother and herself. Christmas and birthdays were ignored by him. Even when her mother was dying, he didn't make time for them. Suddenly, her past pops up in her life, first in the form of Joe. Although he had been her constant companion when they were children, they have not seen each other for years. Now he is a busy police detective trying to find out why his best friend and work partner went bad. He also needs to identify Egyptian forgeries, and asks Lauren for help. The second part of her past to resurface is her father. He wants to have a relationship with her, and invites her to go on an Egyptian dig. As Lauren slowly allows her dad back in her life, red flags start appearing about him. When Lauren confronts her dad, he always has a good excuse. In the meantime, things have started heating up in the forgery search, and with her relationship with Joe. Just as they are closing in on the ones involved, her dad's name starts coming up. He can't be involved, can he? That would mean he had used Lauren to further himself. Can he be that cold and calculating? Will they find the real person behind it all and clear her dad? I enjoyed reading about the character's faith. This exciting story has lots of red herrings, and will make you will feel like it is the 1920's, and part of the Egyptian craze sweeping the nation--it was so far reaching that my midwestern mom, a child then, named her dog King Tut! I recommend this five-star book to those who like mysteries, Egyptian history, or good clean stories. Thank you, Bethany House, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.
