This book is very empowering! I’ve seen a lot of progress with my health. I have a long way to go because I’m slowing trying to make all lifestyle changes. Ive pretty much 100% on the diet, which was easy for me, but stress and activity has been difficult for me to manage. Dr. Sarah Ballentyne is an incredible woman who knows her stuff! You must check out her podcast with Stacy Toth. It’s called the paleo view and it’s a great way to learn the science behind things.

The minute I got it out of the package, I was impressed. The charts & illustrations contribute hugely to information conveyed, and boy is there a lot of it! But it is written in a style that is accessible & only a chapter in I was having "Aha!" moments related to my situation. Thank you so much, Sarah, for this life-changing book.

I call this my AI bible. I admit, some things I have to re-read a few times because the science is so beyond me... but I think that is a selling point for many people who want to know the WHY behind autoimmunity and food's effect on it. Sarah breaks down every detail as to why tailoring your diet and lifestyle will help with recovery of symptoms and even put an autoimmune disease into remission. I have wanted to improve my health and change my lifestyle habits for the last few years and kind of had an idea of what to do but was lacking motivation. I was experiencing a range of symptoms including joint/muscle pain, extreme fatigue, chronic infections, hair loss, digestive upset, skin rashes/hives, and weight gain. My doctor couldn't offer me any real support. I wasn't sure exactly what I should be eating, but I knew I needed to change my diet and get more exercise. Dr. Ballantyne's research and dedication to helping others with their healing have helped get me on the right track. Buying this book, I thought I was just going to get information on food, and The Paleo Approach contains so much more. While I consider myself to know a good bit about wellness, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book has a great deal of new information and tips on how to be healthy in the bigger picture, including tips on how to SLEEP better. I have now been on the Autoimmune Paleo diet for almost a month while giving up caffeine, and am seeing huge improvements in my digestion, overall health and energy levels. Plus, Sarah Ballantyne is great at explaining the science for those of us non-science people. I found that reading this book and fully understanding what I was doing to my body by continuing with certain eating and lifestyle habits, really gave me the motivation I needed to make the shift and change my life for the better. The science info can also be helpful when explaining to the people in your life what your up to including the whys and hows. Best thing is, it's actually working! This way of life is challenging to implement, and having a supportive wealth of knowledge and beacon of success like Dr. Ballantyne is priceless. Love this book. I just bought the Paleo Approach Cookbook, which I highly recommend as well. Also, I have listened to many episodes from Sarah and Stacey's podcast "The Paleo View" to keep the fires of transformation burning.

I have been struggling with several food intolerances, dairy, gluten, and sugar for the past couple years. Along with having an Autoimmune disease, Candida, and low thyroid issues. It has been completely overwhelming to keep up with all of the symptoms, exhaustion, and trying to find something ANYTHING I could eat that wouldn't make me sick. Which was no easy feat. This book has been a lifesaver. It is so impeccably detailed as to the science behind these conditions and the food and health lifestyle needed to heal them. The recipes are superb and super accessible for your everyday cook. :) It is my Go-To resource! It has given me hope that the health stuff I'm going through can be managed if not reversed entirely, and armed with the knowledge this book gives you it is entirely possible! I highly recommend this book as a must read for all!

I bought this book for obvious reasons. I like how everything is laid out. The material is dense and even though I have a B.S. in biochemistry/molecular biology there were times I had problems following everything. Just be patient.

Ballantyne has really done her research and provides excellent explanations as to why it is important to follow the autoimmune protocol correctly if you want optimal results. It is also a good resource for those with food restrictions or who are looking to eat healthier. The charts are a great reference when checking for hidden food ingredients.

Though this book is a bit technical, it is a lifesaver. If you have any autoimmune disease, you owe it to yourself to get this book. I have been following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet for the past 2 months. I feel better, am more in tune with my body, and have lost 15 lbs.

I have just been diagnosed with Celiac and possibly more Autoimmune Diseases. I felt very lost in a sea of conflicting information from my Dr., Specialists, from many sources online, etc. I knew I didn't want to go on upteen medications at the age of 35 - I wanted to use food to heal my body. I came across Sarah's book and seeing her credibilty - both professionally and personally - I knew she was a source I could trust. We ordered her book and were very impressed! The first half is a veritable anatomy textbook (we're using it for homeschool actually!) but it is understandable and approachable! Know HOW x food or y food effects my body on a cellular level really is helping me stick with such a large lifestyle change. Having a trusted source for info. has made all the difference - an answer to prayer. Thank you!

I was diagnosed with celiac disease and multiple food intolerances a couple of months before this book was published, and this book has just possibly saved my life! As a nurse with a strong science background, this book satisfies my need to know why, but at the same time it is so approachable. I cannot wait for the Paleo Cookbook to arrive in my mailbox!!

I have not finished the book yet, but I just got it a few days ago. I am already learning a lot even though I already knew a lot about nutrition and lifestyle. I had been making regular paleo recipes many times, while throwing in what I thought were healthy gluten-free grains, nuts, beans, and eggs, (and occasionally have a little bit of gluten in a meal)etc. I did not realize that these foods could be undermining optimal nutrition. I am very hopeful after reading what I have read so far because it does make sense. She gives scientific explanations for what she recommends. I suspect that I have auto-immunity because I have lichen planus like the author, and I have had I.B.S. over the years, allergies, sensitivity to fragrances and various things, and more recently I had 2 surgeries for severe endometriosis, which they suspect could be due to an underlying auto-immune condition. Also, my mom has rheumatoid arthritis. So, I think that makes me more likely to have it or some sort of auto-immunity. The hope that this could bring so much more quality to mine and other people's lives is priceless. If you are asking yourself whether this is worth your while, answer yourself with a yes. At the very least, you will learn a lot, and all of us need to be continually learning. At the most, you could gain more health and quality of life than you previously thought possible.

This is one of the most comprehensive, well-researched books on nutrition I've ever come across. I had been a Registered Nurse for about 4 years when my health took a nosedive a few months after the birth of my second son. Debilitating migraines several times a month, fibromayalgia flare-ups that left me bedridden, horribly painful gastritis and a diagnosis of Crohn's Disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, a severe case of postpartum agitated depression....to say I was barely functional would be an understatement. I was put on multiple medications by multiple specialists. Not one of those doctors ever looked at the whole picture and tried to connect the dots; it was all pieces-parts. It wasn't until I started doing some of my own research that I started to come around to the idea that all of these separate diagnoses were part of a larger problem (gee, ya think?). I stumbled upon Sarah's blog one day while I was researching autoimmune disorders, and it was like a lightbulb went on in my brain. I had paid so much attention to the medications I was taking to cover up all of my symptoms and had completely overlooked the fact that what I was feeding myself day in and day out was poisoning my body even more. I was so overwhelmed by all the information I found that I knew I needed to start small and work my way up to the full autoimmune protocol. Just going on an out-of-the-box paleo diet made an enormous difference. Within a couple of months, I was able to stop taking 4 or 5 of my daily medications. My blood sugars normalized, my migraines disappeared, my severe joint pain vanished, the gastric reflux and horrible bowel issues I had experienced for over 2 years on a daily basis became a thing of the past, I was able to make it through a full day of activity with my boys without needing a nap, and on and on. It was truly amazing. I saw first-hand how you can heal your body from disease through dietary changes alone. I was shocked that I had never learned anything about this, that my doctors had never once mentioned dietary changes (even the GI specialist who told me after an EGD that he was surprised there weren't holes burned through my esophagus due to the extreme inflammation). It wasn't until last year that I was able to buy The Paleo Approach, and since reading it and putting the concepts into practice, I have continued to heal my body. A year ago, any exposure to gluten or dairy would make me sick for days; last week I accidentally had BOTH of those while on vacation and I had no reaction whatsoever. My body has healed to a point that accidental exposure doesn't even show up on my radar. That, to me, is absolutely amazing. To go from being bedridden several times a month to being completely functional, energetic, and happy on a daily basis - I can honestly say this book changed my life dramatically and I am so grateful that I stumbled across Sarah's blog that day over 2 years ago. Read it, learn it, do it. It WILL change your life.
