About the Book

"Ryan Fleming is a young agnostic reeling from his brother's death. Though he is deeply angry with God, he makes good on a promise he made to his brother in the final moments of his life: to visit a church at least once. But shortly after his arrival, the slick megachurch's shoddily installed video projector falls on his head--sending Ryan through a wormhole into another world. After a narrow escape from the City of Destruction, where the comfortably numb townspeople are oblivious to the fire and brimstone falling like bombs in their midst and destroying their homes, Ryan finds himself on a quest: To make it back to his own universe, he must partner with a woman named Faith to awaken a long-sleeping King--the World-Maker who can make all things new. Replete with characters ripped straight from the twenty-first century American church--including Radical, Mr. Satan, the Smiling Preacher, and others--this sometimes-humorous, always-insightful trek parallels Christian's fictional journey in Pilgrim's Progress. Prepare to laugh, cry, cringe, feel convicted, and ultimately be changed by the time the story ends. The Postmodern Pilgrim's Progress is brought to you by Kyle Mann and Joel Berry, the two comedic minds behind The Babylon Bee--which, with 250,000 newsletter subscribers and more than fifteen million page views per month, is the most popular satirical news site on the planet"--

About the Author

Kyle Mann is the editor in chief of The Babylon Bee. He was created in an orc-spawning pit beneath the tower Orthanc near the end of the Third Age. Saruman the Many-Colored drew upon all his dark powers to imbue Kyle with the ability to write satire of semi-acceptable quality from time to time, and also pillage many small villages in Gondor. Kyle oversees and approves all content posted to the site and writes a good bit of it himself.

Joel Berry is The Babylon Bee's managing editor and a deadly warrior-monk with a shadowy past. Part philosophy-quoting homeschool nerd, part Marine Corps veteran, Joel was found retired in a secluded cabin in the mountains after he swore off his old life and promised to never own a lib again. But Kyle Mann was getting a team together. He convinced Joel to come out of retirement for one final mission: to help run the world's greatest satire site, which he's been doing since 2016.

Light, Fun, Easy Read with Deep Thoughts

Pilgrim's Progress. It's one of those books people feel like they should read, but never actually read because they fear it's long, dull, and possibly written in Latin. This updated, postmodern retelling of the tale puts all those fears to rest. It's short, easy to read, and is packed with humor. As an allegory for the walk of a Christian heading to heaven, it updates the stumbling blocks to be more socially relevant and recognizable. It also tosses in a lot of contemporary entertainment references to keep it light and fun. If you're one of those people who's had Pilgrim's Progress dangling off the bottom of their to-read list for years, read this one instead. You'll enjoy it, and it might even motivate you to plow through the original! And one last word of advice before you embark on your journey: DO NOT SKIP THE FOOTNOTES!

It's hard to write an entertaining and meaningful Christian book these days. It is really, really, really hard. Either they end up being too light and frothy, or rely on too much "inside" humour, or they get too serious. The balance is night unto impossible to achieve. Or is it? Kyle Mann and Joel Berry seem to have carried out the impossible in writing "The Postmodern Pilgrims Progress". Their attention to theologically correct detail is only surpassed by their ability to utterly mask that inside of a ripping tale that is equal parts "Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy", "Discworld", and the original "Pilgrims Progress" (with a smidge of Doctor Who on top for spice). I am referring to writing style of course - but that is precisely what makes this book so amazingly accessible to any reader of fiction. It has its reality firmly planted in an allegory that has as much current cultural resonance as it can contain while deftly supporting timeless truth in an easy and surprisingly non-confrontational way. Believers, agnostics, atheists, both dog and cat lovers, animists, New Age Hippies, real estate novelists, blue-collar rednecks, paperback writers, circus clowns, mendicants and mensches will all find themselves (or people they know) within this tale. Possibly the only folks who will be unable to grasp the core of this book are current academics - but they can hardly be faulted as they have been indoctrinated into not thinking for themselves. I could use quotes and tiny spoilers to tease you with this book, but I prefer to simply say this - read it. I did. And I am better for having done so.

Brilliantly executed. Funny yet deeply thought provoking. A compelling and highly relevant allegory for the times we are living in (or trying to). Kyle Mann and Joel Berry succeed in blending the serious and tragic with humor making "The Postmodern Pilgrim's Progress" a delightful read, while teaching important lessons along the way. A great encouragement not to take the easy way out, but to keep going forward and stick to the road, no matter how perilous, because the end is glorious! You must read all the footnotes, they are hilarious. I am rooting for a sequel. Buy a copy for yourself and one for a friend. Good books should always be shared.

Couldn't put it down

In reading A Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress it is possible to never have read the original work by Bunyon – A Pilgrim’s Progress – but it is much easier if the basic premise is known to the reader. And as this is my particular experience, my review must be considered within that context! There were two other books I also found helpful in getting the most out of “Postmodern.” The first addresses the same story of a man’s redemption but in a different way, A Pilgrim’s Regress by the great 20th century Christian apologist, C. S. Lewis. Though different, it presents comparable situations and so the reader gain insight into both works. The other book that is useful presents the reader with a narrator – as do neither Bunyan nor Lewis in their works. “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” has a similar type of somewhat disassociated narrative. Anyone who has seen the film or read the book gets used to something altogether alien popping up often at the most crucial plot points! “Postmodern’s” journey of faith is similar to that of Bunyon’s and Lewis’s pilgrims, with those differences arising from the conditions in today’s world. For while the moral conundrums of the three Pilgrims were of a type, the worlds in which they encountered those conundrums are vastly different if not in evil itself, then in its extent and degree. As to the “readability” of A Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress: this is an “addictive” work in that should one have to put it down, one soon looks for an opportunity to pick it up again. Indeed, I heartily recommend A Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress. The book provides wisdom and advice to all Pilgrims. More importantly, it provides that most needful of necessities, hope! May all its readers find comfort and wisdom as we travel with “Postmodern” on The King’s Highway through life.
