Unreliable garbage

Disconnected on week one and won’t work. And there is no repair function in soft wear just a test that says it’s bad. How can I trust my files to a piece of junk that breaks after one week? This is ridiculous. It’s a laptop of course it will disconnect without eject at least once.

I've had My Passport for almost 3 years, and use it regularly. It's not failed once, but I am pretty careful when storing it or transporting it. I've used it with 4 different laptops with zero issues.

My Passport died.

Awful. I bought My Passport in 2020, and everything was great. But a few months ago, when I connected it to my PC and tried to open a folder, it didn’t work. My whole Explorer froze for a minute and then displayed an error. From there, when I realized something was wrong, I decided to play it safe and transfer all my folders to my PC. Halfway through the first folder, the speed dropped to 0 bytes/second and never went back up. After about two hours, I decided to cancel it — and even that took another 5 minutes. All my backups were there. I couldn’t access any of them. One day ago, I decided to try again. When it didn’t work, I thought formatting it might “help.” I couldn’t format it. Then I tried deleting the main partition — it failed and said something like: “The request failed due to a fatal device hardware issue.” I downloaded WD Drive Utilities. It recognized My Passport, but said it had 0 bytes. I tried formatting it from there — another error. So now I’m stuck with a non-working My Passport, and the warranty expired in 2022.

Password protected and easy to set up and use!

I had to replace my old external drive which I've had for over 10 yrs. as it started making strange noises. Since I digitalized all of my photos to make storing easier, they were far too valuable to let something happen to them so it was time to get a new drive. After some research, I found that most electronic stores as well as on-line recommend this Western Digital My Passport external drive as it is password protected, is small and competitively priced. It is extremely easy to set up and use.

This isn't the first time I've purchased this device. I can back up multiple systems on this device quickly and efficiently. When it comes to handling migrations, this device is solid, easy to connect, and immediately establishes a solid connection that doesn't drop until I'm ready. A high recommend.

Small, different colors, good value, fast, user-friendly software, full backup service software, plug and play, durable. My first WD Passport 2TB red has been connected to my PC ever since I bought it 5/6 years ago, I use it to store files that I need to be able to take with me on the road. Just bought a new on exactly the same model and size, this will be used as a backup drive of my complete boot drive, a clone ready to reinstall if something goes wrong using the included Acronis True Image software. I trust this drive 100% but I also have a NAS. Once I get my media platform set up, it will include a WD Passport as well 6TB

Trusted? That's funny. My 3tb passport bricked after not all that much use. No way to replace the internal drive with another, so the plastic case can go into the ocean or a landfill, never to be used again. Brilliant design WD!

I had a hard time setting up this drive when I first got it a couple years ago. I should've respected the red flags and got another device. Now here I am trying to overnight a Samsung T7 to save my PSD file I need to finsih and submit by Tuesday. My final straw: hard drive mounts and dismounts on its own accord and has corrupted my files as I bought the drive to work off of to solve my scratch disk issues. It worked until it didn't. Regret ever buying this.

I'm a photographer, so I need additional backup for my images. This device backs up like I need it to, but when I open it, I cannot see the images. All I can see in the file is a jpeg icon. When I'm looking for an image, I need to be able to find it quickly. I don't have time to open every single icon to see if that's the image I'm looking for. Your older product that I had used to do this, however, your new software doesn't work like that. It also creates a separate link for every single day. Why? This is not necessary.

HARD DRIVE JUST CRAPPED OUT

I have taken good care of this drive and one day it just decides that it does not want to work anymore. I took it to geek squad and they said that hard drive was inoperative. Now I have to send it to a data recovery specialist so they can try and save what I have on here. I have barely had it for 2 years.
1 reply from SM OLS team - 1 year ago
Hello, We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. This is not the service we ever want for our customers, this usually never happens. Please allow me to inform you that the Data Recovery requires advanced knowledge and equipment to recover or reconstruct files and data structures. But, Western Digital has the knowledge, expertise and experience in building the drives. WD does not have any in-house data recovery service in order to recover the files from the affected/non-functional hard drives. You may need to contact a Data Recovery company to recover the data. If there are no backups or second copy of the data on an different device or location and data recovery is required, please contact one of our Data Recovery Partners or refer to Answer ID 18754: Third Party Data Recovery Software Options for Windows and macOS. If you have any query related to data recovery or require technical support , Please feel free to contact us directly at www.westerndigital.com/support

Worst external hard drive I have ever bought, It worked all of half a day. Now it will not open and will not show up on my drive to open. The biggest waste of money
1 reply from SM OLS team - 1 year ago
Hello Lucky, We're sorry to hear about your experience with WD My Passport Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing the review. There can a few causes due to which the drive has stopped working. Such causes include the faulty USB port of the drive or the computer, faulty USB cable of the drive or the drive itself may not be getting enough power to spin up and register on the computer to show up. Unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation can also result in the corruption of the drive's partition. Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience. "Setting up and using WD Security and WD Drive Utilities": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13880 "Windows or macOS Cannot Find My Drive": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12455 If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty. "How to Get an RMA to Replace a Defective Product, Obtain a Power Supply, or USB Cable for a WD Product": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10336 If you are experiencing any issues with your drive we would recommend you to contact our technical support team, as we will be happy to assist you with any troubleshooting options you may have with the drive. Please refer the mentioned link to open a Online ticket :https://support-en.wd.com/app/ask/session/ Customer support team will contact you as soon as possible. All our products must pass our stringent quality standards before leaving our factory to be free from defects in materials and craftsmanship.
