This feature is designed to reduce the risk of burns when handling the toaster while it's in operation. However, the area around the slots and the base may become warm, especially after extended use. But in general, the Oster 4-Slice Toaster is designed with insulation to keep the outer surface safe to touch during everyday use. With 7 shade settings (browning control), you can customize to your favorite “toastiness” and its wide slots fit even the thickest breads or bagels! The high lift levers raises up high enough for the easiest removal without getting stuck or burning fingers and the crumb tray is able to be removed for easy cleaning. My favorite feature of this toaster, though, is the reheat option that is a 30-second toasting cycle to reheat your toasted foods without making them soggy, like they can get being reheated in the microwave. Great brand and great quality product for sure!
