submitted byscreen name - 1 year agoA: The HamiltonBeach Team's answer is incorrect. I put a 6" slice of rye bread in there and it doesn't even toast the top 1 1/2 inches of the toast. Hamilton Beach needs to test this and correct it.
submitted byMax Daddee - 5 years agoA: Just shy of 5 1/2" (model 22714). My nearly 50 year old Proctor Silex, made in Baltimore MD, it replaces was about 5 1/4". That 1/4" makes a big difference.

I was excited about this toaster becauase it was stainless steel and I owned a Hamilton Beach toaster years ago and it was great. So, I thought that I would give the brand another shot. This has been disappointing. Even when I make a toaster waffle for my son on the low setting, one side will be toasted with black marks on it. It's very inconsistent.

First, I love the appearance of the toaster. Once I have it, I realized it's inconvenience. The openings are too small for a regular slice of bread. It probably designed for bagel. I had to cut the bread into 2 pieces to toast it, which means one piece at a time. Then I realzied more problem. The heat are uneven. It didn't toast well. I had to toast it a 2nd time at the minimum degree. I had been struggle to keep it as I had used it. Until reacently, I really done with it. I toasted it with small slices of bread. The edge of the bread were burnt while the rest of the bread are barely toasted. I am very much doen with it.

This toaster was totally adequate for about 6 weeks. I used it to make toast every day and it did a decent job, not great but good enough for the price. Last week I tried to toast bread and it started smoking. I thought maybe some crumbs were caught near the elements so I cleaned the crumb tray. The toaster started smoking again as soon as I pushed down the lever. I inspected the elements and could see black marks where the smoke was coming from. It's the elements themselves that are smoking. This is now an unusable appliance and unsafe to use.
Cheaply made. Knob broke on 1st use.

You get what you pay for on this one. We only use a toaster a few times a month. If you are a regular user, don't get. Burns at all levels. Knob broke so we have to twist this metal thing.

The toaster has a nice appearance but during the initial heating, the top1/3 of the outside surface became extremely hot to touch. It was blister your skin hot. As we did not desire a burn hazard on the counter, the toaster was returned.

Used this toaster once or twice a week for about a year, but now the latch won't stay down and I need to stand there with my finger on the latch in order to toast bread. Resources online say it could be caused by stuck crumbs, but I have thoroughly cleaned the toaster and I do not see any crumbs in the mechnical working area. Very disappointing

This toaster was unsatisfactory from the beginning because the two middle burners were weaker than the two outer burners, so every piece of toast was dark on one side and light on the other. Then, at 4 months, the toaster failed--when the bread was pushed down, it would not "catch" and it popped up immediately.

Was a great toaster at first, but in less than 8 months it now smells like it's burning plastic/electrical and when you cancel it has blue sparks. I'm so disappointed as Hamilton Beach is normally great quality. I bought this because my daughter is gluten intolerant and needs her own toaster. Now we have to go buy a new toaster for her.

1. It doesn’t toast evenly. 2. The tinny “stainless steel” is so thin that you could dent it with a plastic spoon. 3. Don’t ever touch it because you will leave a hundred fingerprints. 4. It gets too hot to the touch. 5. It’s not worth buying at any price. I’d give it zero stars if I could.

This toaster seemingly works well, but reeks of melting plastic. You can see part of the component that pushes the food up/down through the crack and it’s actively melting whenever you use it. Anytime I hit the cancel button it also has blue sparks showing in the same crack. It works for a pinch but definitely something I’m replacing sooner rather than later.

This toaster burns food even at low settings. It's inconsistent, and it toasts a different amount in each of the slots. The outside of the toaster also gets very hot when being used.
