A: All lava lamps get hot. This is my fourth one. It's important that you take care not to move the lamp while it's on, but if it truly needs to be moved while the lamp is on, get a kitchen towel or a potholder to carefully move it in a safe place or distance, especially from children and pets. Also, read the instruction manual as every lamp has a time limit. For instance, mine can be left on for eight hours at a time and then cooled off before it can be on again. I typically turn these on at nights and then turn it off before bedtime. If it's on for longer than what the manual recommends, it could destroy the gel inside and possibly the lamp itself. According to the lava lamp website regarding safety, "Lava lamps are generally very safe to use as long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take a few sensible precautions before and during use." This is my 7 yr old grandson’s favorite Christmas gift. He loves dinosaurs and volcanoes and this lava lamp is the perfect decoration for his room. He loves looking at it, and it makes a great night light as well.

The lava stopped moving around 6 months after use. My son would have it on almost every night for ~8 hours. I read some troubleshooting tips when the movement stopped: Make sure the coil spring is centered at the bottom and don’t keep it on 24 hours/day, which we never did. I looked into getting a glass lava bottle replacement, as the bottom part that hold the light bulb still works perfectly, but it would be the same price as a new one. Unfortunate and has been thrown away.

I got this for my son’s birthday, and it was cool, but broke within 3 months, right after the return window expired. So shady. Target would not offer a replacement or refund. This is theft and so awful

I bought 3 of these, all different colors, at the same time. 1 for my son’s best friends birthday and one for each of my kids as their new nightlight. My sons stopped working working 2 weeks. My daughters shortly after and the friends a few months after. The light still turns on. Everything warms up, the lava just has hardened and settled in a clump. I’m really disappointed.
I have gotten 2 of these and they always stop working after a couple of weeks. The lava stops moving even though I only leave it on for 3-4 hours. When it does work, though, it really does look pretty

I got this lamp for my son. We had it for about a week before the bulb burn out. Prior to that, I notice that it would over heat quickly so my son couldn’t have it on for long. Also.. it’s not really sturdy. Nothing holds it together except its own weight. Don’t waste your money of this lamp. Not worth it.
